Strider
My 12 Days of Christmas Music ends with this. This is it...the best of the best Christmas music. These are the albums that are my all-time top favourites: The Motown Christmas album with The Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Supremes, Jackson 5, and Stevie Wonder. An album full of great singing and great grooves..."Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by the Temptations is a stone classic. The Phil Spector Christmas Album with the Ronettes, the Crystals, etc. But there is one reason above all others this album is on the list...Darlene Love's ecstatic performance of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". If this song does not move you, you have no heart and soul. It's why David Letterman always had Darlene Love on his show for Christmas until he retired. It's not Christmas until Darlene sings that song. Verve's "Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas". Chock full of jazz greats Oscar Peterson, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Billy Eckstine, Jimmy Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mel Tormé, and the fantastic "We Free Kings" by Roland Kirk. An album so musically satisfying that I will play it any time of the year. My #1 Christmas album ever: The Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Sheer musical pleasure from beginning to end. Another Christmas album I enjoy playing in July just as much as in December. "Skating" and "Linus & Lucy" and "What Child Is This" are all wonderful. But it is the "Christmas Time is Here" instrumental that leaves me breathless every time I hear it. I can't imagine Christmas without this album. Merry Christmas everyone! Happy Chanukah! Happy Festivus!
