Many differences between them, but to start with you need to know what year the photo you're looking at is. Then the drill is as follows: From 1969 up to & including 1973 it's the #1 all the time. It has changes of appearance (tuners change from Klusons to Grovers, bridge pickup cover comes off to reveall white pickup & is later replaced for a different pickup with a crome cover, jack socket breaks & is rotated to fit, bangs & scrapes start to acumulate) but it's all the same guitar. In 1975 #2 appears for the first time. It has an exposed white bridge pickup (leading some people to mistake it for the one used earlier) & more flame to the maple. Let's stick to the pickup covers... For the '75 & '77 tours both pickup covers on = #1, exposed bridge pickup = #2. Early '80s both guitars have both pickup covers on, but around about 1988 #1 has the bridge cover removed again, showing a black pickup this time. #2 still has both covers on. They stay like that right upto the O2 gig, where both guitars have exposed bridge pickups: #1 = black, #2 = white. There are many other differences but that'll get you started. docron Posted June 16, 2008 Share Posted June 16, 2008 Wow.., you are truly a Jimmy Page guitar connesuier (SP?) I have a question then.. regarding some of the performances in The Song Remains The Same, sometimes Jimmy's Les Paul looks like its a plain cherry and not the burst... is this just the lighting or was he using a different Les Paul? huw Posted June 16, 2008 Share Posted June 16, 2008 docron yes, no and maybe! TSRTS is from 1973, so it was filmed before hed had #2. When you can see a sunburst Les Paul on screen it's #1. There are also a couple of places when you can see his cherry red Les Paul - the one now fitted with a b-bender - which was his back up on that tour. Mainly during the theramin section of WLL I seem to remember. But beware, there are a couple of moments in that film when the stage lights make #1 look like it's a solid colour rather than sunburst. There is a particularly nice moment during (IIRC) D&C when the guitar apears to change colour from red to sunbust before your very eyes because of the lighting cue. This pic clearly shows the intense flame of #2s top: This one shows the mismatched top of #1, and the lack of flame, particularly on the bass side. You'll also notice a nasty ding between the bridge and the tailpiece, about 2 inches into the bass side. That's been there since before he got #2 as well.
