Strider
If you listen to rock radio, there is probably a station in your town that counts down the top 100 or top 500 requested songs. In L.A., both KMET and KLOS would do their countdowns on Memorial Day weekend. Here is KLOS' countdown from exactly 40 years ago in 1982. Led Zeppelin placed 32 songs in the top 500, and was the only band to have two in the top 10, including Stairway at number one, natch. How many of your favourites can you find? How many of these songs are still played on radio today and how many have been squeezed out of the playlist? rm2551
being that it is the top requested - quite the tribute to Zep. Peppered throughout.
chillumpuffer
@rm2551 It was in 1982. 2 Years after the band dissolved.
Zep Hed
Yea these countdowns are always fun. Some tunes on the list may have us saying "Wow really?" but bearing in mind again that it was 1982. Lots of artists on this list were hot for the time period. And many specific albums - multiple tracks from the same ones - are represented from the 80-82 range. Also particular tastes of the Southern California audience influence many of the choices. Plus you have the effect of current popular releases reminding listeners of an artist's past material kinda like when a band's current album boosts sales of earlier albums and bring them back onto the charts. Strider
I was kind of surprised "South Bound Saurez" came in above "Fool in the Rain".

They did these countdowns often on the NYC rock stations for Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July as well. I enjoyed these. Some rock stations still do these, even though much of the countdown is the same with a few additions like REM, U2, Metallica among them. kingzoso
It doesn't surprise me that Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid came in at #26. What does surprise me is that Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid came in at #66. I have never heard Pat Benatar's version before. Especially considering the year this was done in. They still do this in the Bay Area. I also believe they do it on one of the classic rock stations on Sirius radio. Or at least I think I remember them doing that last year? There are several interesting placements of songs on this particular countdown. Thanks for this, cool to see what was up in 82.
