Zeppelin Mysteries Hosted by Steve A. Jones

Classic Rock Magazine has quote from Gary Roissiton from their Zepp special issue recently

"I saw Zeppelin live twice in Jacksonville Fl at the Jacksonville Mem Coliseum.

We had a band then. i think we were called Lynyrnd Skynrd but we could have still going by the name The One Percent. I rememer Jethro Tull opened for them and they were great. but eveyone kept in thier seats. When we saw Zeppelin they blew our minds because all of the girls ran up to the stage. Until then everybody stayed in their seats just to listen to bands. Zeppelin were just unbeleivable. They came out and played so good . Page broke out the violin bow and started going...[imitates sounds}. We thought that was so cool"

Hard not to think his memory isn't playing tricks on him--the part about everyone previously staying in their seats to listen to bands, I mean. The Beatles, the Stones, many lesser bands--the place would be chaos, long before Zeppelin.

His memory is indeed mistaken...

Elvis Presley Jacksonville, FL. Florida Theater (3 shows per day) 10-11 August, 1956

Elvis appeared at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, FL. Juvenile Court Judge Marion Gooding warned Elvis in chambers after the first show that he must tone down his act. Elvis told reporters 'i can't figure out what I'm doing wrong'. Elvis modifies his show nonetheless, wiggling his little finger suggestively with a gesture that replaces some of his less restrained body movements and at the same time still drives the audience wild.

'One of the most memorable events in the theatre's history occurred in 1956, when Elvis Presley came to the Florida Theatre for his first concert appearance on an indoor stage. Presley, the City of Jacksonville and the Florida Theatre found themselves subjects of a LIFE Magazine feature when Juvenile Court Judge Marion Gooding sat through the performance to ensure that Presley's body movements would not become too suggestive'. Fan Recalls Beatles Invasion Of Jacksonville

Edited by Gary Detman bullet1.gif 5 years ago By Deanna Fene First Coast News

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Forty years ago, the Beatles invaded America.

It included a stop right here on the First Coast.

"Once you saw them in concert you were pretty much hooked, even though your parents might not have wanted you to go to the concert," said Rick Fryefield.

Rick was just ten years old when he first saw the Beatles live in concert at the Gator Bowl.

"I guess I was screaming like the rest of them."

The Beatles arrived in Jacksonville in September of 1964.

They were starving as they sat down for a press conference.

"We usually eat in the room but seeing the hotel didn't have room for us, we have to eat here unfortunately," said one band member.

The Beatles were supposed to stay at the Washington Hotel, but there was a mix-up and they ended up staying in a trailer next to the Gator Bowl.

Forty years later, Rick is still a huge fan.

He has the same guitar that Paul McCartney once used.

And like many fans, Rick believes their music will live forever.

For it is sorcery — as one might say –

When the pale opal wine ends all misery,

Opens beauty’s most intimate sanctuary –

Bewitches my heart, and exalts my soul in ecstasy!

– from the essay “The Green Goddess”, by Aleister Crowley. The original manuscript is currently owned by Jimmy Page.

Thanks for this...clarifies Lynrd Skynrd members were ticket holders as opposed to having shared the bill with Led Zeppelin.

I remember the tv interview where one of the members of Skynyrd made the claim that they blew Zep off the stage. I'm pretty sure he said it was at a festival in England - Donnington, perhaps?

Or maybe it's just a firmly held but faulty memory by the Skynyrd member, like my otherwise-sane insurance man who is convinced he saw Zeppelin in concert in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania despite the fact they never, ever played anywhere near Harrisburg :)

Lynyrd Skynrd didn't become a prominent act until 1973, and the only festival dates Led Zeppelin played then onward was Knebworth (Aug 4 & 11 1979). Skynyrd did play the 1976 Knebworth Festival...perhaps he meant their '76 Knebworth was better than Zep's '79 gigs at the same venue. Who the hell knows. I do know they never shared the same venue on the same date and were never on the same bill...ever...anywhere.

Led Zeppelin only performed in two Pennsylvania cities - Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Or like my memory for decades that I'd heard Zeppelin play STH at Bath, till I finally realized I couldn't possibly have, as they hadn't written it at that point. :bagoverhead:

I'm not otherwise-sane, though.

I don't have this show with me to play through, but is it not Cream's 'Crossroads' ?

Edit: This from Otto Masson:

I am using a different bootleg for this show, but I just had a listen, and to me that passage sounds quite a bit like "Rollin' and Tumblin'". I am also hearing Jimmy quote "Crossroads" much earlier in the song, just before they do the San Francisco bit.

It is definitely not "Crossroads". And it is not "Rollin' and Tumblin'" either. The search continues.

Now about that Lynyrd Skynyrd quote. As previously stated, Skynyrd and Zeppelin never shared a bill.

I think what this poster is referring to is the 1976 Knebworth Festival where Lynyrd Skynyrd DID blow the Rolling Stones off the stage.

Okay, what the hell is this? Jimmy and The Beach Boys? When was this recorded and for what reason?

Sorry, watched the full thing and figured it's July 4th celebrations? I'm a Canadian eh.

I think it's from 1985. Jimmy was in the U.S. at the time as he had been touring with The Firm and performing at Live Aid a few days later in Philadelphia. The "Lucille" clip I may have seen before. Although, the video footage looks different during "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Barbara Ann". I remember hearing somewhere on this board that he may have done another performance with the Beachboys in 1986 as well. During this time he also was on his second tour with The Firm.

I'm sure someone can confirm all of this.

The June 21st 1985 edition of the 'Houston Chronicle', among other sources, reported Page among several artists to perform with The Beach Boys in Philadelphia on the fourth of July. His performance with them in Washington was also reported in advance.

July 4th 1985

Philadelphia Art Museum - Philadelphia Freedom Festival

Page joined Beach Boys "From Sea to Shining Sea" set for an unrehearsed rendition of 'Lucille'. 1,500,000 in attendance.

Page boarded the Beach Boys bus enroute to the airport and then took a helicopter into Washington.

The Mall - Washington D.C.

Page joined the Beach Boys for unrehearsed renditions of 'Surfin' USA' and 'Barbara Ann'. 750,000 in attendance. Page also interviewed backstage by 'MTV' and NBC's 'Entertainment Tonight'.

The video clips in circulation originally aired as the television program 'The Beach Boys - Bring On The Summer'.

The book The Beach Boys: The Definitive Diary Of America's Greatest Band On Stage And In The Studio says:

The album Fourth Of July - A Rockin' Celebration Of America is released on Mike's custom Love Foundation label. Among performances by other artists it includes versions of 'Back In The USSR' with Ringo Starr on drums, 'Surfer Girl' with Julio Iglesias, and 'Barbara Ann' with Jimmy Page and friends...

And then the night got weirder as Jimmy Page was joined by Joan Jett in D.C.

jp19850704b_01.jpg

Just three years later Joan Jett & The Blackhearts were enjoying singles chart success

and selected as the opening act for the second leg of Robert's 1988 North American tour. I thought they were very energetic as his support act...it was a perfect match.

By pure chance I've come to learn a new acquaintance of mine (who recently interviewed Jimmy in Los Angeles) is seeking to contact Peg LaForce, who as it turns out is a long-lost best girlfriend of hers from nearly 30 years ago. Well, I do know Peg once published a Led Zeppelin fanzine titled 'The Crunge' (and later retitled 'Music Creations') from Jan 1982 till

June 1985 as I have nearly every issue in my archive. Her address at the time was West

Covina, CA. If anyone here should know the whereabouts of Peg please contact me via

PM.

Robert Plant at the Checkerboard in Chicago

Here's an anonymous contribution:

This is my only celebrity story. I was with some friends at the Checkerboard Club in Chicago, a legendary but by then overrated blues joint. We were there to see Junior Wells. Now Junior could be great or a disaster, depending on how drunk he was when he came onstage. This was not his best night. Still, we enjoyed the first set.

Between sets Robert Plant walks in with a smallish entourage, just a manager and a groupie. This caused a stir among the white clientele, while the blacks were impressively unimpressed. ("Who is he?" the waitress asked me. "Led Zeppelin? What did they do?") When Junior Wells staggered back out he announced that he was being joined by "a very good friend...good friend...London...who is he? who?...Robert Plant!" Plant jumped on stage and gave a very respectable set of blues, backed by Junior's shaky harmonica and his awesome band. (Every southside Chicago blues band is amazing.)

After the second set some of us went up to Plant to say hello. Alas, the conversation was dominated by my Sting-obsessed friend Justin. "Robert!" he said, "Tell me, did you ever meet STING?" Plant admitted that he had. "Wow! You've met Sting!" my doofus friend exclaimed, as the rest of us (especially Plant) flinched. "What is he like? Are you friends?!"

"Well," Plant said, "Sting is rather the definite article, where as I am an indefinite article."

"Robert, I am not sure I understand you" said Justin, despite being an English major.

"Sting is a 'the' whereas I am an 'a,' " Plant explained. He really was a sweet and patient man, and may have been the only sober person in the bar.

"Robert! I'm still not getting you!" Justin flailed.

Robert Plant put his hand on my friend's shoulder and spelled it out: "Sting. is. an. asshole."

---------------------------------------------------

^^^

This may have happened in November 1993, as Robert had a couple days off around his Arie Crown Theater concert on 11/3/93, when Blues harpist James Cotton joined him on

'Look Over Yonder', 'Sweet Home Chicago' and 'Gambler's Blues'. I am seeking to confirm

when and if Robert joined Junior Wells as has been related here.

That photo of Joan and Jimmy is awesome! Thank you. Joan's got a rock 'n roll heart, to quote the Clapton song - she's a true believer.
