I just wanted to comment on the song "I Believe" by Plant off Fate of Nations that was discussed...ha 8 pages back by now?

I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff, but this is a very good song. The subject does make it that much more personal and you can hear it in his voice.

Hi Bigstickbonzo,

Thanks for getting back to the subject at hand.

I just found this quote from Robert in a book that I purchased at the RRHF titled "The Rough Guide to Led Zeppelin". At the beginning of each chapter is a quote and this is the one for the chapter titled "Crash Landing 1977 - 1980":

"Fate is already written. I tried to pick myself up, and as I did so slowly, I realized my family was way more important than the luxurious life I'd been living in Led Zeppelin". Robert Plant

That could explain a mystery or two. Thank you for that quote. It's quite a good one.

Words that we should all heed.

BigStick, it's a great song. I love the whole album but that song really hit home

According to the sources I've read, Maddox was introduced to Jimmy via B P Fallon in 1972, after Jimmy was shown a photo of her. Apparently she never ventured out with the band outside of Los Angeles, and their relationship ended in 1973.

On May 31st, 1972 Jimmy Page was at Rodney's Rainbow Grill and Bar celebrating John Bonham's 24th birthday. Also attended Sable Starr, Lori Maddox, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Pamela Des Barres, Rodney Bingenheimer, Morgana Welch, Peter Grant and other friends. Whether this photo was actually taken there I am yet to confirm.

I note in Davis' Hammer of the Gods, Jimmy is wearing the same shirt in the photo and it's dated 1972.

Meg

:) I'm jogging my memory here as well . It's Jimmy's hair that got me thinking...lol

Led Zeppelin's 6/25/72 afternoon soundcheck at the LA Forum was recorded -- an hour of 'Elvis Golden Discs Volume One' renditions!

Steve,

Any idea what became of this soundcheck as I have never seen it in the usual places? Maybe, Jimmy kept this stuff locked up tight, unlike a lot of the sondboard material that made it's way into the bootleg circles back in the 80's and 90's. This would be something if this ever saw the light of day, considering that the band was in peak form for the show that night.

Thanks Meg. I guess I'm just thinking that Bonzo's birthday party in LA was in 73 but again, I'm really going off the top of my head with this. It's not necessary to confirm for me specifically.

Cheers

Yes, They did have a party in 1973. Laurel Canyon. That was the party in which George Harrison was thrown into the swimming pool, along with almost everyone else, except Peter Grant.

Meg,

Thanks for the additional info on the date of the picture.

According to Lori herself, in Pamela's book, Let's Spend the Night Together, she was still seeing Page well after 1973. She was with him at The Drake Hotel at the time of the robbery and was sent away before the police did any investigations of the band members room. This was in 1975.

Hmmmm okies. I always assumed that Jimmy and Lori had broken up in 1973, and Jimmy had started seeing Bebe Buell. Bebe Buell was Jimmy`s designated escort to the Swan Song soiree in 1974.

You know, maybe the hotel robbery wasn't in 1975, it may have been 1973. Not sure.

In the book, Lori states it was 1975 but maybe she is mistaken about the date.

Thank lynn, yes it was July 29, 1973. Jimmy has got years mixed up as well so everyone makes mistakes. Apparently Lori was at the LA concerts when Led Zeppelin toured in 1977.

Hi everyone!

After reading Miss Pamela's books as well as most of the Led Zeppelin books, I have concluded that Jimmy and the rest of the guys did love these girls at the time that they were with them. The problem was, the girls were not true to Jimmy and chased after any Rock Star (and their handlers such as Richard Cole) who came to L.A., and I think that it bothered him. If you listen to the words of alot of the LZ songs, I think that they are singing about the groupies. Songs such as "Hey Hey What Can I Do" (I've got a woman who won't be true) gives one insight as to their feelings about women. Of course, the guys weren't true to the girls, but that was acceptable then. Jimmy even asked Miss Pamela to allow him to "do certain things" when he was on the road as he was likely to be lonely. Jimmy locked Lori Mattix in his room, presumably because she was underage, but also probably to keep her away from the other guys having a go with her. The only life that the band knew was life on the road. They were touring constantly in the early years. It had to be very lonely for them. I believe that they had established relationships with the L.A. groupies and the groupies were their family on the road. They even cut a gig short in New York City (unheard of for Led Zeppelin) so that they could take the Starship to L.A. where they could party with the groupies. Robert Plant recovered after his auto accident in California probably to be near the groupies. Jimmy did phone Pamela and Lori and did send a Christmas gift to Miss Pamela. I do think that he cared for them.

Jimmy Page had no right to demand that Lori Maddox be true to him when she was under the age of consent. It's a mystery how someone can confuse the desire to possess someone with true love.

According to Keith Shadwick in his book, Led Zeppelin, The Story of a Band...... the Drake Hotel robbery occurred on the evening of the last Madison Square Garden show 1973.

So, Lori was mistaken about the year. Meg, what you said initially about their relatonship ending in 1973 is probably right. When Lori returned after a few days she found Bebe with Jimmy in his hotel room.

With all this talk about Lori, Pamela etc. and Jimmy Page, maybe we are diverting this thread into something it isn't meant to be.

I'm feeling a little too "gossipy" (is there such a word?) Should this really be in the mysteries thread?

Just asking, I'll stop now on this subject.

Thanks to all for your input but I'm feeling some of this might be inappropriate for this thread.

This is also written in 'When Giants Walked the Earth'.

Jimmy seemed to only have had a sexual interest in Lori.

You had better not trust 'Hammer Of the Gods'.

Jimmy called it a crap.

I tried to change the subject earlier but we got back to discussing the groupies, which is probably more interesting. I guess there are no set rules, just go with the flow.

I don't recommend the Davis book or Cole's book but I believe every source has it's place, and you are right Alice the Davis tome should be approached with caution in regard to the minute of detail nonetheless.

Lori should have had someone guiding her career if she was underage so that she would benefit from the way she was being used.

Do you mean, like a pimp?

Or should her mother have been reining her in and not letting her stay all night with a man twice her age?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Meg

Thank you,Meg.

The "bimbo" comment was referred to by Pamela in her 2nd book "Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart". She was doing a radio interview at the time in Miami promoting "I'm With The Band" and Jimmy was in town with The Firm at the same time.

The DJ asked her "So what do you think about Jimmy Page calling you a bimbo?" The DJ played her an interview he had done with Jimmy a few hours earlier. The DJ asked him what he thought of her book and his reply was, "Oh I've met a lot of bimbos out there. You know how girls like to exaggerate".

I think that these are exactly Jimmy's feelings to groupies.

Otherwise, who did he say about?
