Birthday = fæðingardagur, but when you say it in Icelandic it means the exact day when you were born; and "hamingjusamur" only applies to a person that is feeling/is happy, etc. - thus the day can't be "hamingjusamur". "Afmæli", if you take the word apart and analyze it, literally means "counting from" or "measured from", so yeah, anniversary. It's only ever used in this kind of context though, despite the fact that the word itself could be understood literally in a general sense. And that concludes our Icelandic lesson for today...
