John M Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Excellent ! Thanks for posting this. Funny bit about how Jones thought they were Progressive but then he thought that is really a term for things like Floyd and King Crimson. Quote
LH1982 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Great interview. I always love hearing JPJ speak. I’m so glad I got to see him at all three of his shows at Big Ears Festival. Here is my review of it for anyone who may not have seen it (I posted it in another thread earlier this year.) https://diaryofanardentfan.com/index.php/2024/03/25/a-dream-i-never-thought-would-come-true-finally-did-my-big-ears-festival-experience-seeing-john-paul-jones-3-times-and-herbie-hancock/ Quote

John M Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Great bit where he talks about composing, not using an instrument. He mentions how composing a string arrangement using the piano would make the parts sound like strings playing piano. He says he loves melody. He says bass can be very boring if you make it so. Great stuff. Wonder when the song cycle will come out. He talks a bit about the opera The Ghost Sonata, but he has been talking about that for a long time. Any news on that? Quote
John M Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Wow, he learned about 12 tone composition techniques (and he said he could use them) when he was 15. He talks about Schoenberg and Pierre Lunaire. Wild stuff. Quote
