Michael Fry
Wondering if anyone is able to help me with something. Been looking for a transfer of the 1993 LD of TSRTS with the Dolby Surround track intact as I've read it was similar to the quad track from the 70s cinema release and therefore different to the surround track on the 1999 DVD. Anyone have such a thing by any chance? Thought Ledzepfilm or a similar film expert might have transferred it. Cheers!
zoso_ledzep4_yy
“TSRTS 1993 LD US version” Format: Laserdisc, 12", NTSC, Dolby Surround https://www.discogs.com/ja/release/3007204-Led-Zeppelin-The-Song-Remains-The-Same After obtaining the US version of LD, which I had longed for, I transferred it to my PC. “Pioneer LD Player CLD-F7 (audio and video output: RCA & S2 terminals) > I-O Data GV-USB2 USB connection video capture>CyberLink PowerProducer6 (software settings: picture quality HQ & audio LPCM)” > mpg file(※Only 2-channel stereo can be imported from the RCA jacks on analog equipment to a PC.) [An example of LD surround sound output using YAMAHA's APD-1]=I'm utilizing Yahoo Knowledge Bag for my research. “To play AC3 Dolby Digital audio using YAMAHA's APD-1, the following procedure is recommended. Connect the AC3 digital audio output of the laser disc player to the AC3 input of the APD-1. Connect the optical digital output or coaxial digital output of the APD-1 to the digital input of the AV amplifier. Select the digital input in the AV amplifier settings and set it to bitstream output. If your AV amplifier does not support AC3, you will need to convert the AC3 to a PCM signal on the APD-1. In this case, the APD-1 settings must be changed.” Even if I had the above system, it seems impossible to import LD surround sound to my PC. >Thought Ledzepfilm or a similar film expert might have transferred it. I asked ledzepfilm... “Nope, don't have that...Sorry.” If they had added the original soundtrack digital Dolby surround sound to the 4:3 screen, it would have been a simulated movie theater experience from 48 years ago...................Too bad! Michael Fry
Thank you so much for that detailed reply. A fascinating problem to be solved. Someone out there MUST be able to help!!😂 Anyone...?
zoso_ledzep4_yy
To play digital surround sound from a surround-compatible laserdisc, the LD playback equipment must have an AC3 terminal, which must be connected to an amplifier via a digital conversion converter. But we can't do this in this day and age when audio systems have evolved. https://www.discogs.com/ja/release/1131325-Led-Zeppelin-The-Song-Remains-The-Same If you want something close to the Dolby Surround sound you saw in movie theaters 48 years ago, I suggest you put up with the fact that it is not the original full screen (4:3) screen and listen to the 1999 US DVD on a home theater 5.1 system. Michael Fry
One thing that has become apparent from zoso_ledzep4_yy and me investigating all the different VHS, Laserdisc and DVD versions is that, despite Jimmy Page saying that he couldn't edit a single frame for the 2007 Blu-ray version, there are differences between the VHS/LD version and the 1999 DVD release. The most obvious one is the segment showing Peter Grant getting in the car near the beginning of the film. It's completely missing from releases pre-1999. There's also an extra few seconds of footage of Peter coming through the door at about 4'25 that's not on the pre-1999 version but it seems completely out of place - an editing error that wasn't spotted, perhaps. The moments when the audio and video are out of sync vary a bit between these versions too due to slightly different or cleaner edits. It's all very mystifying, especially considering there was a bit of fuss about the footage being untouchable for the 2007 remaster.
