Southampton University 1973, choice of audio

Recommended Posts

This particular show, starting 'life' with a very good recording 50 some years ago, has been remastered multiple times. So many times that when it came to making a [tisdu] version with support slideshow I was torn between two versions. One is the "Led Zeppelin Live in Hampshire 1973" set, the other out there as "January 22 1973 Southampton University UK (2022 Remaster)".

They have differing and quite distinct appeal, "Hampshire" sounding for a soundboard relatively raw and gutsy, "2022 Remaster" delivering more instrument to instrument clarity, but perhaps just a little too... 'clean'?

Anyway, either way, this offering allows the listener - you - to switch between both audio tracks on the fly, settle on one or the other for any given playback session, or decide on one over the other for all time.

The slideshow was originally put together by Conneyfogle, who I owe a debt of gratitude to for the fine visual interpretations of the music of Led Zeppelin and offshoots. I've made a slideshow or two of my own over time, but Conneyfogle's the master.

John M, hi.

The link is on its way. I think you, and many other fans, will find it interesting to have, at the tap of a finger, the ability to compare different treatments of a show's audio. The 'novelty' may wear off, but don't we all collect multiple copies of favourite shows as they are remastered and so on? And have to go looking for the discs or close and open new files? It doesn't need to be.

In this spirit and intent, you may also be interested to hear the 3 soundtrack options version of Vienna 1973. It's in the same folder the link will take you to.

Enjoy, Michael

PS And if you really enjoy, let everyone here know.

Michael this Southampton is fantastic.  Thank you so much for sharing this. Great to be able to toggle to the two different sources.  Both sound splendid.  This is such a great recording and I like the atmosphere.  Wonderful stuff.

John, hi.

Thanks for your response. I'll try to avoid becoming too gimmicky with the alternate soundtracks option, but when there are equally entertaining but distinctive takes on shows, having them right there (ah-hem) is too good to pass on.

Michael

PS I am working on more 1973 shows as I'd been focussing on later tours until the redoubtable SteveZ98's work on the Vienna 73 soundboard four tracks lured me back in time.
