Aquamarine Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 At our request, that song was played at our wedding. *Gulp* Now it seems even more moving. Quote
Jahfin Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 This thread is six pages long and still no dead dog songs? Old Shep When I was a lad And old shep was a pup Over hills and meadows wed stray Just a boy and his dog We were both full of fun We grew up together that way I remember the time at the old swimmin hold When I would have drowned beyond doubt But old shep was right there To the rescue he came He jumped in and then pulled me out As the years fast did roll Old shep he grew old His eyes were fast growing dim And one day the doctor looked at me and said I can do no more for him jim With hands that were trembling I picked up my gun And aimed it at sheps faithful head I just couldnt do it I wanted to run I wish they would shoot me instead He came to my side And looked up at me And laid his old head on my knee I had struck the best friend that a man ever had I cried so I scarcely could see Old shep he has gone Where the good doggies go And no more with old shep will I roam But if dogs have a heaven Theres one thing I know Old shep has a wonderful home Words & music by Foley - Westpar Quote

Swede Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 ^^^^ Let me guess....Country? I wouldn't call Steve Earl country, though there are country influences in his music. It's rather rock and singer/songwriter type of music, like Townes Van Zant, Lucinda Williams and the likes. Quote
stonefreelee Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 This thread is six pages long and still no dead dog songs? How 'bout live dog songs: the BEST and saddest: "That's the Way" ...and yes, i'm sure someone has already listed this... Quote

songbird Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Autumn Leaves by Eva Cassidy.... holy shit! Fields of Gold by her is pretty tear-jerking, too. Ten Years Gone by Zep, gets me everytime; Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson, even though its an instrumental. Even more moving to me now since Oscar just passed away; that song Paul wrote for John, I can't remember what its called right now, but its absolutely impossible to listen to without bawling your eyes out; Song of the Siren- Robert Plant :'(; All Things Must Pass, George :'(.... oh god there's so many sad songs! The Rain Song, That's The Way, are Zep songs that always get me. Quote
IGG Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) One,by U2 KB(smiling) Hey, somebody else listed that song.... for me it has special meaning as my mom listened to that album endldessly before she died. I basically leave just about any room if I hear it, the lyrics speak very closely to my relationship with her at the time she passed on. I always wondered if the song was actually sad/moving to others though. OK, bummer over now. Edited January 26, 2008 by IGG Quote

stonefreelee Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, Jeff BecK One,by U2 KB(smiling) WHOOPS accidental post (above). There are so many it's easy to forget some...Jeff Beck Wired - WOW best album by him EVER and yes, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is a great sad song...even without lyrics...and you reminded me of U2. Although I wouldn't go with "ONE", how about the even sadder "BAD" and from the same album, "Elvis Presley and America"? While I've never been able to completely figure out the lyrics to the latter, the lush, emotional sound of that song makes me sadder than almost ANY song I know! And I couldn't give a hill 'o beans about Elvis...it's just, listen to the song if you never have. So SAD. Though I suspect most of you know, it's on "The Unforgettabe Fire" , my favorite U2 album... Puck Slapping Maple Sucker Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I find "Cowgirl in the Sand" by Neil Young; The Massey Hall version, most moving. Quote

Cali Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 If You See Her Say Hello - Bob Dylan Perfect Day - Lou Reed Helpless and Journey Through the Past - Neil Young. I also think Pocahontas is very haunting. Quote
minelle Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I don't know about the saddest song EVER...but Sister Golden Hair by America makes me really sad. Listening to it right now. :'( Quote
stonefreelee Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Smoke gets in your eyes do you have the zep cover from japan '71? mine had horrible sound quality on that song, but...i've posted this elsewhere, but it always reminds me of the crystal clear version/spectacular performance of "Friends" from the same record...wish they'd release that...never heard another live version of that AWESOME song!!! eskimoblueday Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) Two more that strike me as sad: "Ships" and "All of the Good Ones are Taken", both by Ian Hunter. And "Why", by Annie Lennox. Edited January 27, 2008 by eskimoblueday Quote
Aquamarine Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 One that I find so poignant I can hardly listen to it is Springsteen's The River (the song, not the whole album). Quote
eskimoblueday Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 One that I find so poignant I can hardly listen to it is Springsteen's The River (the song, not the whole album). Oh, "The River" is beautiful. Bruce has written a number of songs that deal with a kind of despair and loss and hopelessness that seems so final and yet unending. "Atlantic City" and "My Hometown" come to mind for me. I find "Brilliant Disguise" sad as well. Quote
Electrophile Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 The whole Tunnel Of Love album was written about the break-up of his first marriage, so all the songs have that dark, melancholic feel to it. "One Step Up" is a sad one as well. Quote
MadScreamingGallery Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Bob Dylan Dylan! It has to be the live version of this particular song. I saw Dylan perform it live several times during the late 70's. There is one live version where he strongly emphasizes the "your world" - it's another one of those songs that I can't and won't listen to because it evokes such strong emotions: Just Like a Woman Nobody feels any pain Tonight as I stand inside the rain Ev'rybody knows That Baby's got new clothes But lately I see her ribbons and her bows Have fallen from her curls. She takes just like a woman, yes, she does She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does And she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl. Queen Mary, she's my friend Yes, I believe I'll go see her again Nobody has to guess That Baby can't be blessed Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls. She takes just like a woman, yes, she does She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does And she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl. It was raining from the first And I was dying there of thirst So I came in here And your long-time curse hurts But what's worse Is this pain in here I can't stay in here Ain't it clear that-- I just can't fit Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit When we meet again Introduced as friends Please don't let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world. Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do You make love just like a woman, yes, you do Then you ache just like a woman But you break just like a little girl. We were hungry and it was his world.
