"Abraham, Martin and John"

by Dick Holler

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good die young,

Now I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend John?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good die young,

Now I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed a lot of people,

But it seems the good die young,

Now I just looked around and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things they stood for?

Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?

An' we'll be free, someday

I know we'll one day.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

Thought I see them walkin'

Up over the hill

With Abe, Martin and John

You've got a friend.....both Carole's and James's versions

When you're down and troubled

And you need some loving care

And nothing, nothing is going right

Close your eyes and think of me

And soon I will be there

To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name

And you know wherever I am

I'll come running to see you again

Winter, spring, summer or fall

All you have to do is call

And I'll be there

You've got a friend

If the sky above you

Grows dark and full of clouds

And that old north wind begins to blow

Keep your head together

And call my name out loud

Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name

And you know wherever I am

I'll come running to see you

Winter, spring, summer or fall

All you have to do is call

And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend

When people can be so cold

They'll hurt you, and desert you

And take your soul if you let them

Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name

And you know wherever I am

I'll come running to see you again

Winter, spring, summer or fall

All you have to do is call

And I'll be there

You've got a friend

"That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be"

Carly Simon ~ Music ---and--- Jacob Brackman ~ Lyrics

"That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be"

My father sits at night with no lights on

His cigarette glows in the dark.

The living room is still;

I walk by, no remark.

I tiptoe past the master bedroom where

My mother reads her magazines.

I hear her call sweet dreams,

But I forgot how to dream.

But you say it's time we moved in together

And raised a family of our own, you and me -

Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be:

You want to marry me, we'll marry.

My friends from college they're all married now;

They have their houses and their lawns.

They have their silent noons,

Tearful nights, angry dawns.

Their children hate them for the things they're not;

They hate themselves for what they are-

And yet they drink, they laugh,

Close the wound, hide the scar.

But you say it's time we moved in together

And raised a family of our own, you and me -

Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be:

You want to marry me, we'll marry.

You say we can keep our love alive

Babe - all I know is what I see -

The couples cling and claw

And drown in love's debris.

You say we'll soar like two birds through the clouds,

But soon you'll cage me on your shelf -

I'll never learn to be just me first

By myself.

Well O.K., it's time we moved in together

And raised a family of our own, you and me -

Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be,

You want to marry me, we'll marry,

We'll marry.

That is such a beautiful song! I have always liked Carly Simon.

I like that one too! I love James Taylor and Carole King. I don't find the song really sad so much, but very moving.

Other sad songs that get to me are:

The Living Years-Mike and the Mechanics

Songbird-Fleetwood Mac

Landslide-Fleetwood Mac

  • 1 year later...

I just perused all of the posts to this topic looking to see if anyone posted the one song that comes to my mind when I read what the topic was. I don't think anyone mentioned the song I am about to name. As much as I love Led Zeppelin and "Classic" Rock and Roll in general, I think that this may "take the cake" and be one of the great and most depressing songs of all-time (my Opinion):

"I Can't Live (If Living is Without You)" by Badfinger or Harry Nillson or Air Supply or whoever wrote this song.

Badfinger, I suppose. Although I think that most people who know this song know the Air Supply version. I just listened to all three versions on YouTube (as I am posting my comment) and I have to say that I like all three versions. If you choose, decide for yourself.

If you consider sad (and depressing) to somehow co-exist than I think this is the saddest song that I can think of. Oh well.

Is anybody noticing a country/western theme here?

Here's a pop number from the '70s: "It's too late, baby, it's too late, though we really did try to make it..." --from I can't remember who.

Carole King; that's another good one :)
