stonefreelee
Adrian Belew, one time guitarist for King Crimson released a number of solo albums in the eighties and nineties, the most notable of these was titled "Young Lions" and featured a couple of songs written and sung by David Bowie...Just wondering if anyone has heard this disc (early 90s, I believe) and am curious what some opinions are on this and on him in general...let the games begin! Mona
I haven't heard any of his solo stuff, but I love his work with King Crimson.
ninelives
I have it. I had actually met him and had him sign it. Truth be told, I haven't listened to it in so long I can't remember what it sounds like He had another album prior I think that had the song "Oh Daddy" which had a really silly but fun video. Jahfin
I remember it as well but also don't recall what it sounds like since it's been so long ago.
stonefreelee
Heard of it, but never got around to it. Whaddaya mean 'one time'? I thought he was still with the King. wow, if he is i didn't know, 'could very well be. I had one or two of their 'albums'. Actually, I copied them from a friend's 'new' cd's (wow!) to cassettes (chrome always, thank you), in the late 80s and have never really 'followed' King Crimsonn per se, but respected the works of their creators, Fripp & Belew especially . The same friend i had recorded the "court 'o crim..." from, turned me on to the solo albums of Belew, mainly "Young Lions" and the subsequent one, "inner revoultion", i think it was called. Haven't followed him since really, but always thought that album was brilliant and 'oft overlooked contribution from a viable artist. imho... The album 'Young lions' opens with title track...interseting lyrics, if you can flow with the tribal drums and chants (belew!),augmented with belew's trippy, spacey guitar effects... I actually haven't listened to it lately, but i remember "Pretty Pink Rose" one of the bowie/belew collaborations...is a fairly straigt ahead rocker w/ more trippy guitar effects and lyrics that are...incredible, in my very humble...well, everyone has their own faves, i suppose. Like i said, i never was a huge Crimson/belew fan, but have always had a soft spot for this disc. It has many different styles and elements and could never understand why it wasn't 'bigger' when it came out. Soon after, 'unledded' would come out, and 'ylions' would be relegated, elcliped by [bt]greater goodness... I actually came across adian belews' 'official' blog (i suppose) quite by mistake one day. I eventually found in the archives section on of his anecdote/bloqs about his encounter with jimmy page 'back in the day'...i think it is called 'elephant blog' or white ele...just seek and you will find... many interesting anecdotes (i never knew he played with f. zappa, too!) YOUNG LIONGS???? I like... ...
Joelmon
I loved Adrian's guitar work ever since I first saw him locally here in Nashville in his band called Sweetheart. That was 1976 and he was playing at a club called Fannies....and after the Zappa show here in Oct. '76....Zappa went over to Fannies, he always was looking for local talent, and was Adrian and later called him to audition for his band. Sweetheart used to dress as 30s-40s gangsters and played stuff ranging from Steely Can, Bowie to the Beatles.....they were really excellent. I met Adrian back then and he's still just as approachable and humble. So with Frank Zappa he went on to further acclaim...He IS a guitarist's guitarist....a 'stunt' guitarist if you will, as he was described as back then. He went with Bowie for a few tours and The Talking Heads...among others before Fripp invited him to join King Crimson...For Fripp and Zappa in particular wanting him in their bands....You CAN'T achieve higher acclaim !!! So I saw Adrian again with the first reincarnation of KC in '81....then again with the double trio KC in '96...then again several times in 2000 with the duo duo KC2K band... OH...I dont' have 'Young Lions'...but do have others by him....astounding variety within his canon.... Among most music listeners he's unknown....but guitarist know of him..and scrutinizing listeners do as well.....He's unique and can't be beat. He lives here..just outside of Nashville and hangs around various restaurants and venues....and always is friendly.

JethroTull
Fans of this Adrian Belew person who live in Northern VA, Maryland, DC should check out the Jammin' Java schedule. He is playing there in March?? 08. It is a very small venue. http://www.jamminjava.com/ At Jammin Java, I've seen Acoustic Strawbs, David Lindley and Garland Jeffreys. Garland played about 40 minutes and then bailed out of the situation. He was sick.

I was in the "bootheel" at the time and couldn't make it...Adrian played in a bar called the "High Pointe"cafe...probably holds no more than 75 people. My friend scott said he basically played by himself with pre-recorded "backing music". He did say it sounded amazingly good, though...
