Cat
I have about $400 USD to buy a new PC; I don't need a new monitor or anything else, just the CPU. I primarily use it for surfing the net, storing photos and videos. I am currently using a dialup connection, as high speed is not yet available in my area (once it is I will switch). I need suggestions and recommendations for an expandable system. Thanks Cat

Dzldoc
Unless your planning on a lot of video editing or publishing a magazine you don't want a Mac besides I don't think you can find software for a Mac for under $400 ( sarcasim inserted ) I 'm guessing you live in a rural area since you don't have high speed access. Are you in the US? try these sites they usually have some good discounts. As far as brand it's pretty moot, they are all pretty much the same inside just different storage space and memory speeds. Dzldoc
I'm in the Chicago, IL area. Here's what's probably a stupid question: once I get a newer PC, and without high speed, will I be able to watch videos on a dialup connection? No high speed connection in Chicago? Video on dial up would depend on the size of the file. When I'm away from wi-fi and using the edge network on my iphone, you tube plays ok. The edge network is a little quicker than dial up. Hope you get high speed soon. When I first bought a pc I had that 6 months of ao hell and didn't much use the pc. High speed is like night and day if you've ever used it you know what I mean lol
Del Zeppnile
Congrats! Most ignorant quote of the day! Was it the part about a Mac being an over priced 'computer-like' piece of crap? Or the thing about the skill sets of a chimp? Btw, welcome to the forum.

Thanks i'm not a fan of compaq either since hp and compaq are now the same company...you can get deals on tigerdirect.com for cpu..dell isn't bad but it's expensive when you do the add-ons...and don't forget the anti-virus software
spatdrastik
I have an hp and I love it on your budget you should avoid intel cpu's (my advice is to avoid them anyway, I've built dozens of machines and without a doubt AMD is the way to go...for me anyway)

Humbucker
Congrats! Most ignorant quote of the day! Seconded: As Cat's budget is capped, there's no real point in directing him/her towards Apple computers. I have used both PC and (now) Macs, and there's no way I'd return to the Kingdom Of Gates and Windoze. Apple computers are for people who have things to do: PC's are for people who enjoy the need to constantly tinker and adjust. RB

Humbucker
It´s price in Europe is 599 euros, that´s 870 USD Or, to put it another way: £447 (Sterling) where I am, although the cheapest I can find is £441/$858 US on Amazon. For what it is, it's an excellent choice if you already have a monitor and keyboard/mouse. RB
Cat
No high speed connection in Chicago? Yes, but where I live is not wired for high speed, which sucks cuz there's so much out in cyberspace (zep videos, for one), I'd love to watch. My current PC is about 5+ years old and it takes about three days to download a video. So, even if I get a newer PC, large size videos are out until I get high speed. Is that correct? Dzldoc
Pretty much, there's always satalite but it's pricey. Not worth it unless you'll have a long wait for high speed, that does suck
