The Guns and Roses Thread

Guns n Roses: One of my favorite bands. In top 5 atleast.

People either love them or hate them. The haters still listen and can't resist.

There is something magical about Guns n Roses. They were like the Beatles in the early 90's.

The music has stood the test of time.

It's too bad the original band broke up, but Axl and his new band are amazing. There are a lot of GNR leaks out there, and they are incredible. When Axl comes out with his new album, it will probably be the biggest album of the last 20 year years.

I'd compare them to Zeppelin more or less. In terms of blowing up in a very short span, and playing to such large crowds. You can add the fact that they had a great live show as well.

P.S. that album isn't going to come out.

I'll never forget the first couple of times I saw the Welcome to the Jungle video. Who the hell is this? It really had an impact. There was recently a show on VH1 discussing the making of that video and how the band's management got MTV to start playing it. I think Steven Adler the drummer recently had a stroke and he don't look or sound too good.

Adler had a stroke in the 90's. Supposedly, he's doing better, and off of drugs.

He gave a great feel to the music. Which is part of the reason, they didn't sound the same after "Lies".

Let's not forget the UYI albums. Holy fuck.....

Civil War is a gol durn masterpiece, and they improved upon 2 already great cover tunes.

Plus you gotta love the over the top stylings of Axl. He really made the band pursue the huge ideas, imo.

Great band, but ultimately it comes down to the fact that Axl is one of the most dysfunctional, weird, hard to get along with people EVER, and he burns down every personal relationship he's ever involved in. The rest of the band members would be down with a reunion any time, including Slash, but it'll never happen because Axl is too difficult and unpredictable.

That's what you think.

I heard Mick Wall, who wrote a book about the band in 1992, and has now written a bio on Axl, interviewed on the radio yesterday. The stories he was telling about Axl were hilarious. Combined with the stories I heard Slash tell when he was interviewed after his own bio came out, they paint a pretty clear picture of what Axl is all about.

Here's a pretty funny story Slash told, that gives you an idea of how sensitive Axl is to any perceived slight. Back before they were famous, Slash was living at home. He let Axl crash at his house for a while because he had nowhere to stay. Slash's grandma would always sit on the couch during the day and watch TV, and everyone knew it, so they didn't sit in her spot. So one morning Axl comes up from the basement and crashes on the couch. Grandma comes up and wants to sit down, and wonders who this kid is on her couch. She asks him to move, and Axl jumps up and starts berating her and swearing at her. Slash hears about this, and while they're driving to rehearsal , he has a talk with Axl..."dude, you can't talk to grandma like that. If you want to continue to stay there, you're gonna need to apologize to her". With that, Axl opens the car door while they are driving, and bails out of the moving car. No one hears from him or sees him for WEEKS, and rehearsals grind to a halt. All because he was told he needed to apologize for berating an old woman. That's what Axl is like...

Not to even mention Axl's well documented abuse of women. Anyone who would hit a woman isn't much of a man in my book. That said, Welcome To Jungle was most welcome when it first hit the airwaves but it doesn't change my opinion of Axl one bit.

What exactly happened? I never heard the full story.

I don't really care about what people say about Axl because as a rock singer, he is great, and thats all that matters when your listening to them.

Being a rock singer doesn't excuse him from shit, especially being abusive towards women. Then again, look what being a celebrity did for OJ. It's a sick, fucked up society we live in today where murderers go free. Celebrities get all the headlines while war rages on. Somewhere along the line a lot of folks out there got their priorities wrong. Very wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that his stardom can excuse him from what he has done, coming from a female myself. I just don't think that in terms of a musician that he is a bad man. I don't think his private life and musical life can be associated because they are two very different things, and his musical reputation shouldn't be tainted by his celebrity reputation. They should be kept seperate, so lets talk about the music!

The two are inseparable to me and it's not just his abuse of women. He's also been the root cause of riots at G n' R shows for showing up late (or not at all). While the impact of their first album is undeniable, it's also undeniable that Axl is a complete ass. His self-importance is even further illustrated by the constant delay of Chinese Democracy.

I don't think that Axl was to blame for the riots. Those people who rioted, were to blame for the riots.

They could have simply gotten refunds.
