Rotting away in a prison for decades, rather than a few years on death row and then the injection? The problem there is we've had to put up with not only keeping Manson alive for almost 40 years (at tremendous taxpayer cost) but we've also had to put up with him making the news with the likes of idiots like Geraldo Rivera and Guns & Roses. The girls may have been hippies, and would have taken up that ideal had they fallen in with a different crowd. But they fell in with someone who turned them into something else. Manson portrayed himself as a guru, and used his age, experience, and criminal background to manipulate those people. Had they never met him, I'm quite certain they never would have murdered anyone, and may have been just "normal" everyday hippies.
