The 02 gig was recorded to 48 track

Recommended Posts

I have just finished reading the latest Audio Technology magazine and it had a whole article on the 02 gig. Basically they took a 48 channel split from the console (so its recorded 'clean') and recorded it at 24bits 48khz. The article says it was for 'Archive' purpose but i think its getting ready for a DVD or at least CD release.

This news plus the fact that cameras were everywhere seems positive.

Hey, I can't see why Jimmy can't work his magic on this show and edit the shit out of it as he did with Zeppelin DVD and The Song Remains The Same. They had a dress rehearsal the day before; they could edit audio from that with audio from the real show.

And besides, who from the band said they were only "okay?" All I remember were the most positive vibes from them in interviews and such.

Don't know how they would have filled 48 channels...

4x Page amps

1x Plant

2x JPJ

10(?) Bonham + Vox

Various crowd mics....

Anyone?

The production for that show was certainly geared towards recording something which could be released. No expense spared. Someone forked out for it (Warners/Atlantic) and someone will want to recoup those expenses. Will it be released? Depends on tour plans and other considerations.

AHMET ERTEGUN TRIBUTE CONCERT TO COME OUT ON DVD. Good news for the millions of people who want to go to the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert on Monday, but aren't able to - the event will be recorded for a DVD release. The show, which pays tribute to the Atlantic Records co-founder, will feature performances from Foreigner, Paul Rodgers, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and, most notably, a reunited Led Zeppelin. There's no word on when the DVD will hit shelves.

Only ok? I don't think so. From the live experience to the various audio recordings to the Third Eye DVD, I think they were far beyond ok. And it seems the band members feel the same way based upon some of their recent comments. Not to mention all the positive critical reaction. A performance certainly worthy of a professional release.

I agree, it was definitely more than "Ok," it was pretty phenomenal! But, there were a few rough spots that would need some creative editing. The Dazed & Confused mess up is the most obvious. Also, Jimmy's guitar went very out of tune during In My Time of Dying. The constant feedback would have to be worked on. All pretty minor things as a live show goes, but for a release that's out there for posterity, they would want to clean these things up. I'm sure we'll see it in due time!

I guess everyone posting here has considered and duly dismissed the possibility that only some[ie-not all!] of Zep's set may be released? I'm thinking of a compilation dvd featuring something from all the artists that performed that night. Sold under the Ahmet Ertegun banner rather than Zep At O2,this would let Zep present the 'best' of their set[chosen by the band and edited/produced etc by J.P of course]. Result?-all musical contributors get recognised, Zep get to retain their famous/notorious 'quality control' and the charity/foundation makes a lot more cash. Looks like an interesting way to go...

If they tour this could be just a small part of a tour compilation

They had a couple of overheads, plus they probaly had backups, and a feed for the video montage. Figured they had aleast 25, but the act before them probaly had their own lines in. It may have a 48 track, but they probally did't use all 48.

Why not release two versions?

One 3 - 4 disc which covers the whole event with all the musicians / bands including Zep.

The other of Zep only (for a keepsake and for Ahmet I would buy both of them as indeed I'm certain many others would too).

I could see Robert as usual being the stumbling block. He was good but there were enough weak spots in his performance that he might not be happy with. He did well for his age but there were a few moments that might not come across well with an unforgivingly accurate recording.

I have the Third Eye DVD and I have to say A. For a bootleg it is really well done B. I have watched it every night , at least 3 or 4 songs since I got it and straight thru at least ten times, and it gets BETTER every time! I can't see any reason not to release it, I think they sound better than a lot of bootlegs I have heard from the late 70's. I think In My Time of Dying was Awesome!!! Black Dog, In My Time of Dying, For Your Life, kills me every time!!!! When Jimmy stops and puts his hand on his hip and looks at the audience right before ripping into that middle section, gets me every time! Other stand outs: Song Remains the Same (Jason is awesome!) No Quarter, very, very trippy! As a long time serious fan, could care less if they ever play Stairway or Whole Lotta Love, although those were O.K.

In terms of tracks used the article says 34 for the band, but this includes seperate tracks for FX, so there would be say at least 4 guitar tracks, but then maybe another 4 for effects (stereo reverb, stereo delay) so it makes up the numbers

Personally I am not seeking a perfect show, I would like it just as it was and as I remember it. I would be happy to lose thr feedback though.

A dvd would be even more welcome to me B)

What he said. :)

This is as much about history and paying respect to Ahmet Ertegun, too. I'd love to contribute more to the cause.

well, you have to remember that you must decide to record a show before you actually perform. obviously if they'd decided that they wanted it recorded they'd use the best equipment possible, but just because it was recorded doesn't mean it will be released. most bands these days record every show they play, but it's not as though they release every single one. I'm just saying that you can't know beforehand how good a show will be, so you prepare as though it is going to be a great, release-worthy show, and then decide more after you've gotten a chance to review the show later. even if they did release it, it would be hacked to death anyways and you'd probably not even get the whole show. they've released 4 official live albums over the years (TSRTS, BBC, HTWWW, TSRTS) and all 4 have been spliced and deleted and whatnot...

I'd really like to see this article, any possibility that someone can transcribe it-- or make some scans and post?
