Story by Jung of a conversation with a chief of the Pueblo Indians: Jung asked the chief’s opinion of the white man and was told that it was not a high one. White people, said Ochwiay Biano, seem always upset, always restlessly looking for something, with the result that their faces are covered with wrinkles. He added that white men must be crazy because they think with their heads, and it is well-known that only crazy people do that. Jung asked in surprise how the Indian thought, to which Ochwiay Biano replied that naturally he thought with his heart."

Cherokee Prayer Blessing

May the Warm Winds of Heaven

Blow softly upon your house.

May the Great Spirit

Bless all who enter there.

May your Mocassins

Make happy tracks

in many snows,

and may the Rainbow

Always touch your shoulder.

Go Forward With Courage

When you are in doubt, be still, and wait;

when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage.

So long as mists envelop you, be still;

be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists

-- as it surely will.

Then act with courage.

Ponca Chief White Eagle (1800's to 1914)

Earth, Teach Me

Earth teach me quiet ~ as the grasses are still with new light.

Earth teach me suffering ~ as old stones suffer with memory.

Earth teach me humility ~ as blossoms are humble with beginning.

Earth teach me caring ~ as mothers nurture their young.

Earth teach me courage ~ as the tree that stands alone.

Earth teach me limitation ~ as the ant that crawls on the ground.

Earth teach me freedom ~ as the eagle that soars in the sky.

Earth teach me acceptance ~ as the leaves that die each fall.

Earth teach me renewal ~ as the seed that rises in the spring.

Earth teach me to forget myself ~ as melted snow forgets its life.

Earth teach me to remember kindness ~ as dry fields weep with rain.

An Ute Prayer

When you were born, you cried

and the world rejoiced.

Live your life

so that when you die,

the world cries and you rejoice.

Two thoughts by His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV:

I find hope in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe.

When the days become longer and there is more sunshine, the grass becomes fresh and, consequently, we feel very happy. On the other hand, in autumn, one leaf falls down and another leaf falls down. The beautiful plants become as if dead and we do not feel very happy. Why? I think it is because deep down our human nature likes construction, and does not like destruction. Naturally, every action which is destructive is against human nature. Constructiveness is the human way. Therefore, I think that in terms of basic human feeling, violence is not good. Non-violence is the only way.

"During a recital in Berlin, Andrés Segovia’s guitar was heard to emit a loud cracking sound. Segovia rushed offstage and, cradling his instrument, kept repeating, “My guitar, my guitar.” It was soon learned that the man who had built the guitar had died in Madrid at the exact moment in the concert that Segovia’s guitar had split." The True Peace

The first peace, which is the most important,

is that which comes within the souls of people

when they realize their relationship,

their oneness, with the universe and all its powers,

and when they realize that at the center

of the universe dwells Wakan-Taka (the Great Spirit),

and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.

This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this.

The second peace is that which is made between two individuals,

and the third is that which is made between two nations.

But above all you should understand that there can never

be peace between nations until there is known that true peace,

which, as I have often said, is within the souls of men.

If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian, he can live in peace...

Treat all men alike. Give them all the

same law. Give them all an even chance

to live and grow.All men were made by

the same Great Spirit Chief.

They are all brothers. The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it....

Let me be a free man,free to travel,

free to stop,free to work,free to trade where I choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers,free to think and talk and act for myself, and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty.

O' GREAT SPIRIT

help me always

to speak the truth quietly,

to listen with an open mind

when others speak,

and to remember the peace

that may be found in silence.

DESIDERATA

"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,and remember what

peace there may be in silence.As far as possible without surrender

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quielt and clearly;and listen to others,even the dull and ignorant;they too

have their story.

Avoid loud and aggresive persons.they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter;for always their will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievments as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career,however humble;it is real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Excersize caution in your business affairs;for the wolrd is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is,many

personsstrive for high ideals and everwhere life is full of heroism.

be yourself.Especially do not gein affection.

Neither be cynical about love;for in the faceof all

aridity affection.

Neither be cynical about love;for in the face of all aridity and

disenchantment it is as pereniial as the grass.

Tale kindly the counsel of the years,gracefully surrendering the things of youth.Nurtue strength of the spirit to sheild you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyound a wholesome disciplne,be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the univers no less that thee trees and the stars;you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the univers is unflding as it should

Therefore be at peace with God,whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and inspiration,in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham,drudgery and broken dreams,it is still a beautiful world.

be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight O'clock.

My my beloved...

Kahlil Gibran on Love

When love beckons to you, follow him,

Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.

He threshes you to make you naked.

He sifts you to free you from your husks.

He grinds you to whiteness.

He kneads you until you are pliant;

And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;

For love is sufficient unto love.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."

And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
