As long as they're willing to mark 'em down to $5, I'm more than willing to snatch 'em up. I picked up the Skynyrd mainly because of the two unreleased live tracks. Until I heard "Railroad Song" at a local restaurant around a year ago I wasn't even aware that they'd even played that song live, much less that it was available on the reissue of Nuthin' Fancy. I haven't heard most of Wide Awake In America in forever and a day; unfortunately I've been unsuccessful at ripping it to iTunes. When I arrived at around 8:30 Saturday morning, the line was nearly around the block. Once inside I was able to procure everything I was looking for, which actually wasn't very much this year but the records I'd hoped to find were in short stock so I'm glad I arrived when I did. Our one lone independent record store in Raleigh, Schoolkids Records, was recently taken over by a fellow named Stephen Judge of Blurt Magazine and Second Motion Records (home of The Church and several other bands). Just prior to introducing John Howie, Jr. and the Rosewood Bluff to the crowd around 2 on Saturday as part of the afternoon long line up of entertainment, he told everyone that Saturday had been Schoolkids' best day yet from a financial standpoint. That was very reassuring to hear but unfortunately, they're still fighting what appears to be a losing battle against the popularity of downloads, despite the recent resurgence in vinyl sales. That said, I hope they're able to stick around for many more years to come. My Record Store Day finds: I also picked up a handful of free stuff from Coachella, Sub Pop, Record Store Day, New West, Southern Ground Artists and a Live at Montreux compilation. I saw the Fabulous Knobs album in there several weeks ago but it didn't really pique my interest until I heard it was fetching as much as $90 on eBay. I tipped a few folks off about it so I was quite surprised to still see it in the racks today. The other album is a compilation put together by the folks at the now defunct K-94 FM out of Norfolk, VA. I was never able to pick up the station all that good because it was so far away but at night you could get a pretty clear signal. We had some good local radio in NC back in K-94's heyday but they sounded like nothing else around here. The comp consists mainly of bands that were more well known in the Tidewater area of VA but there's at least a couple (the Super Grit Cowboy Band and Sutter's Gold Streak) that were also quite popular around these parts. Think Springsteen, Southside Johnny, the Clash and Graham Parker all rolled into one and you'll begin to have some idea of what they sound like. This is the latest in a series of 45's they're putting out leading up to the release of their first full length record. Scored this thanks to Prine's current sale via his Facebook page. A different album will be featured for sale each weekend throughout the summer up until Labor Day. I have most everything of his either on vinyl or CD but still have a few holes to fill.
