Internet Safety

Great thread - young people who visit this site should be aware that there have been incidents on this site in the past that have led as far as restraining orders and police involvement. The trouble is that banning these people dooesn't work - they just return under another name pleading victimisation. So without instilling paranoia, the plea for awareness and to stay alert to the presence of possible wolves in sheep's clothing is very welcome indeed. Thanks Bonnie.

Great thread and long overdue IMHO.

I agree.

One more thing: Please be aware that everything you post, every picture, every detail of your life, every PM, every webcam convo or chat on the web can be saved to somebody's computer and be posted again on a forum without your authorization . I'm not even talking about people hacking into accounts. If you upload private pictures to photo hosting sites, please remember that there's usually a "private" option which closes your account to casual visitors - same with profiles on myspace etc. Don't be paranoid but be aware that when you share something with one person on the web, you're potentially sharing it with the entire web community, and once things are posted on a forum there's no way to stop their proliferation. So if possible limit the number of people you're sharing information and/or pics with. Also keep in mind that while not everybody you talk to on the web is a potential predator or stalker, relationships can turn sour and some people are then happy to get back at a former friends or mates by posting embarrassing pics, msn conversations, PMs etc. on message boards.

Just please get my permission before you teach my children to grow up paranoid of everyone. Currently they are warm, loving and have great relationships with their siblings and with adults.

I do believe the Supreme Court will back me on this one.

I am unaware of whoever it is who is "raping" young girls or young boys/

Was this seen by anyone here?

Were you there?

Did you see the police documents?

Or was in another rumor made up by some misfit with nothing better to do than spread rumors?

Please let ME teach my children.

Let me teach them factual information.

We do need to be careful, but there is no need to scare my children with alarmist beliefs.

Be wise. Let people who are old enough to have children teach for goodness sakes.

Who here has kids?

Bonnie?

Red?

Electro? Electro may be old enough to have children. I really dont know much about her.

I am saying that for the most part these weird things happening is uncommon, that is considering how many people interact online. I know a whole bunch of people who have met, actually gotten married and live happy rewarding relationships. The web cann work for you, or against you. Make it fork for you and used as a screen, not a shield.

I'm sure you wouldn't have posted this if you were aware of things that had gone on here, so please just accept that some of us here DO know what happened. There is a huge difference between paranoia and safety, and if your kids are as wise as you think, they will take from this what they wish and leave the rest.

Oh - and in response to your edit - I have a child.

Well,

Thank you anyway. And I will assure you they are very wise. I am saying be nice to people and they will usually be warm in response.

Those who are punished teach?

Thank you whoever you are. Oh, I am happy you have a kid. They are the most rewarding, yet confusing little crumb snatchers :D

No kidding!

No joke. I've been given the most rewarding gift on Earth. And believe it or not it was due to an online list.....patience....dedication....and a "Whole Lotta Love."

We took madness and made a family.

Now that deserves two eh?

I guess they could interact on a very aggressive, immature way in real life instead; not that it would be much of an improvement.

Yes, but there are a lot of people who come onto the internet and spew bile at each other, who are actually socially inept, and need proper face to face interaction. There are other people who enjoy being rude for the sake of being rude, but in real life are much more likely to be polite and mild mannered. It's the anonymity of the thing that gets those people off. And what's weird is, those people find suckers who are far too caught up in their 'internet life', and respond.

There simply can't be enough awareness, because these dudes are out there, and it's only going to get worse.

Let's not just make this a gender situation. As evidenced by the number of female teachers being arrested for having sex with underage male students, this topic holds truy for both boys and girls who are on the internet.

Well of course it's important for parents to inform their children on the dangers of the internet etc. But even if they do, sometimes children can end up in situations involving interactions with pedophiles. I can't see how having all this information is a bad thing at all. No one's advocating absolving parental responsibility at all.

I hope all our teen members stay safe and act with caution but if they do find themselves in a situation and are perhaps afraid to talk to a parent but need help, seeing this thread and knowing many of us adult members are here to help them in any way we can could prevent them from getting in a really bad way.

My children do not know you from Adam. They do not know how old you are or if you just raped and murdered your partner. So your advice is about as useful as the last persons lol.

No offense of course :D

You could say your Mother Theresa, Bonnie or Clint Eastwood just as easy as the next.

Why are people so intent on making well-meant, useful and very pertinent advice seem wrong?

I'm not offering anything other than my thoughts on the matter. And of course the same could be said about you. No offense of course :D

That's my point. Let's have fun and just be careful :D Things really have'nt changed much over the past 20 years besides the media spreading hype in microseconds, false information too.

I am really quite afraid for some of the future generations. And Bonnie probably meant well. I just hear so much bad news nowadays and would love love love some kind lovin and warm funny news. I would love love love it

That was a good point though huh? You trust me about as much as I trust you. Buuuut there are good times and ways to screen too.

Screen and meet in public if you do meet. Let someone know where you are and take a friend. For adults only too :D

No offense, but I really don't get you. Obviously Bonnie meant well. How you can take offense at his thread is completely beyond me - do you mind road safety tips as well? And as for asking you before addressing your children: Most kids are active on the web without any parental supervision. There's no way for people to "ask parental permission" before addressing those kids. I too would be happier if there were fewer bad news but this doesn't mean that people should put their head in the sand and ignore exisiting risks and dangers. I still hope that there is something like an internet community where people watch out for each other - and especially for underage members.

I'd second that

Fault "the media" if you will, but it's not just news and information spreading in microseconds -- child abuse and child pornography also spreads that quickly. As is teen sexuality and knowledge of sex among their peers via the internet. Like it or not, everything in life is accelerating.

Speak for yourself here. As a parent, I have absolutely no problem with the intentions of this thread and no understanding whatsoever of those who do.

I'm not being funny fella but what exactly is your beef with this thread? I don't think anyone is telling you how to raise your children but you must admit you can't keep your eye on them 24 hours a day. Do you not find it comforting that someone at least has made the effort the start a thread that may be of some assistance to youngsters that may find themselves in a tricky situation. Am I missing something here?

Great thread Bonnie, and as said earlier, long overdue.

Predators and Pedophiles never seem to sleep so it's great to get this information out there.

I do worry about people that would have a problem with this type of thread. As a Father of three girls, I find Bonnie's post helpful and completely necessary. Especially with the events that have taken place right here in our back yard.
