I might be wrong, but was'nt she BLONDIE? I think her name was Debra Harry, Although my spelling might be wrong.

The band was Blondie, she was Debbie Harry.

And to others - she IS a cultural icon, (perhaps it is harder to recognise that unless you lived through her era ) and getting older doesn't mean she has to stop performing. I'm not deciding against going to see Stephen Stills live later this year because he isn't 21 anymore; fans here aren't telling Jimmy to put down his guitar because he's past 60, and if people still want to go and see Debbie Harry, she should still be out there ( and this is from someone who WASN'T a particular fan).

She's not really a cultural icon. Well of course maybe to some people, but a cultural icon can only really be fully appreciated in retrospect, the passage of time is needed to boil an era down to certain indentifiables. She was certainly fashionable back in her day, but her representation of that time period hasn't survived.

Thanks for the lecture but I'll disagree with you entirely. ;)

Debbie Harry influenced MANY female musicians in terms of vocals and style... just like Madonna has. People that you or I would not even have guessed. I'm not huge fans of either, but I do like songs by both, and appreciate them for what they've done over the years as far as influence goes.

I have no problem with Debbie Harry, I don't mind her at all, in fact she was pretty good back in her day. Except the quality she had back then that made her what she was, she no longer has, and that's why i feel she's a little past her prime.

I have no problem with people being 60 or whatever and up there dancing away, but the trouble with Harry (haha Hitchcock) is that when you career or fame is based on certain attributes that fade with age, it's difficult to have the impact you once had.

I understand what you are trying to say, and there lies one of the main differences between her and Modonna. Debbie did her thing, and she certainly made an impact on music at that time, but Modonna had the ability to keep reinventing herself keeping her music new and fresh for two whole decades. and I respect that. I did like some of the songs she came out with over the years.

Well just in case anyone is interested, she spoke about being on The Saturday Night Special, and her face lifts and other plastic surgery. Just fasinating stuff! not really I was being sarcastic. :D

Wasn't there a story about Plant, Page and Clapton standing together backstage at Live Aid and Madonna came through escorted by her security guards?

Apparently they were telling everyone to get out of their way and they got to the trio and said "move it guys, MADONNA'S coming through." Our heros all stood still and Clapton said "you must be joking."

OMG....is that's true...y want to kill her...come on she is just a whore...an 80's gruppie that all...

And you can't don't know who is JPJ if you like zepp..

Well that's the thing, Madonna is not what she was back then, she's managed to adjust herself to something fresher now, Debbie hasn't been able to do that, and I'm afraid when you're in the pop world it's kinda crucial to be able to do that

I enjoy threads like this one. Lots of strong opinions, interesting interpretations and the ploy I like to see more than any other-passing off personal views as set-in stone, incontrovertible facts.Excellent work. All my favourite stuff is right here.

Madonna? Conservative, in the social sense, attention-seeking and a supreme manipulator.People, images, the media, she can and does twist them all to her own needs. She annoys me less than, say,Metallica or U2. Same for Kylie too.

By the way, did I detect just a tiny hint of misogyny in the comments about Debbie Harry's appearance and dancing?Interesting that so much of the 'criticism' here relates to the appearance of female performers,as if their primary purpose is to be decorative for men. Should all women stop appearing on stage when they pass, say, 40? Does that apply to men too? What if I said Mick Jagger should stop dressing like a juvenile and quit dancing like an embarrassing uncle at a wedding? Same thing.

What a great post!

Here's the thing: I was a fan of Blondie, not so much of Madonna's (for exactly the reasons you stated, plus I thought her singing was crap). This reminds me of people arguing about the Ramones in another thread; though I wasn't a fan, I could appreciate them for what they were and what they contributed. I feel the same way about Madonna. For me, the "Like a Prayer"video was phenomenal in so many ways. Though I'm not a fan, I am not about to go after her for singing and dancing at her age, any more than I would Debbie Harry. A tiny hint of misogyny? Hardly- it's like a huge wallop! Interesting, isn't it.

No, no mysogyny...

I have to say when I saw the new Martin Scorsese film about the Rolling Stones, I turned to my friend and said "30 years ago, this would've been great" but unfortunately the Stones came across as old and tired...

I have no problem with Yoko Ono up on stage doing her thing til she's 90...

Because Yoko's work wasn't based on her being attractive or fashionable...

The thing with Debbie Harry is that, okay, she was a decent enough singer, but what really made her famous was her look. The fact that she was beautiful and fashionable, slightly edgy, had a youthful attitude, her fashion style...that's what catipulted her to fame and is the main reason why people paid attention to her was because she was style icon at the time..

But she's not anymore, she's lost all that. Now she's fat and old and looks dorky. Now there's nothing wrong with looking fat and old and dorky, that's fine, and if Debbie Harry had become famous back in her day for looking old fat and dorky, then there would be no problem whatsoever, but whatching Debbie Harry today is like watching a bloated tired Elvis in the late 70's and trying to imagine that striking figure he was in 1956...when you look at Debbie Harry all you can remember is how she used to be...

You've got to be careful when 'image' is or was your thing, because of you can't create another image when you get older, and if you're just a pale representation of what you were, forget it, retire and go home. You're not what you were anymore, and you haven't moved on, so stop wasting everybody's time

As far as I'm concerned, Nina Simone could still be up there doing her thing, or Stevie Nicks could be 80 and still going, Kate Bush or Joni Mitchell or Cleo Laine, no problems. I would love to see Ella Fitzgerald up there 91 years old, as big as a house, belting her stuff out, but unfortunately we can't...

But you see none of those women made their impact or made their careers through being a style or fashion icon, so it doesn't matter how old and fat they are. But Debbie did, and when you've lost it, you've lost it.

I hate to be harsh, but that's showbusiness kid...

If people still love Debbie Harry, then God bless you all and I hope she's around a long time to entertain you guys. But for me, her time has come and gone...

Yeah, but "Die, skank, die".......!? I know you didn't say it, but SHEESH! I hope Madge's kids never see any of that.

Hmmm....but I said some not so nice things about her, too. Okay, I don't know what to say about it anymore.

Look, I don't hate Debbie Harry, she can do whatever she wants for as long as she likes, and God knows she probably doesn't give a flying fuck what I think...

But I just think she looks stupid, that's all.

Like Boy George does when he appears on TV practically dressed as a plant

:hysterical: I've always loved Boy George. The more ridiculous he gets, the more I love him. As far as Debbie, I gotta admit I haven't even seen her on tv for a few years. They did a pretty good song a few years ago and I remember entertainment reporters/commentators SLAMMING her at the time, fo what she was wearing. Whatever. She can wear whatever the hell she wants, I still think she's a cool lady and it doesn't bother me in the least. But we all have different tastes :)

well nothing back then...

But she's a bit dorky now because she thinks she's a cultural icon, and when she's in concert these days, she does kinda look like somebody's slightly drunk middle-aged Mum dancing around at a 21st party...

:hysterical::hysterical: So true!! Nice observation...

Once the boobs start sagging it's time to hang them up.

Out with the old, in with the new.

What about the face? What about man boobs? Shit, you guys are harsh.

Hello? Keith Richards, anyone? The man is a fright. But he's only one extreme example of dozens of sagging, bagging, crusty old farts nobody seems to have a problem with.
