RIP George Carlin

There weren't many hip moms when I grew up, but my best friend had one. She would let us listen to her George Carlin records (yes, records) when we were youngsters. Some of his stuff was really out there. Here's one of his musings that always stuck in my head, from back then:

Chop my head off, chop it off

Roll it up, roll it down

Look at it, dear - it's me

It's ME

Freaky...

I remember well the hippy dippy weatherman......

I remember seeing him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

The first album I ever bought by him was FM & AM.

I saw him live in Austin in the 1970's.

His stand-up comedy in the later years became quite caustic.

A "Best Of" Carlin should be in everyone's collections !

If I'm not mistaken George Carlin was the first Host of Saturday Night Live.

Yes, you are correct about that FirstLZ. The very first show in 1975.

Man, what a loss...and I was getting so geeked up for tonight's Plant/Krauss show...

this news brings me down some.

For me, George Carlin was up there among the first rank legends of edgy comedy:

Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks.

His comedy albums of the 70's were essential listening...as much a part of anyone's

record collection as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Stones.

You could probably add Monty Python and Cheech & Chongs' records to that list as well.

While there a few good comedians out there today(Mitch Hedberg and Patton Oswalt

are two I like), the more time passes, the more it seems like the golden age of comedy

is over.

If you saw George Carlin live, count yourself among the lucky ones.

Rest in Peace, George Carlin.

Mitch Hedberg is RIP, too. A year or two ago. He was from Minnesota. Loved him.

Aww shucks. :( We've lost a true comic genius. ..a comedian with the courage to be politically incorrect in making us laugh with his scathingly spot-on observations of American culture and the human condition in general.

I'm at a loss for words..

except these:

Shit!

Piss!

Fuck!

C*nt!

C*cksucker!

Motherf*cker!

Tits!

Thanks for the laughs, George! :D:beer:

Hi all,

"The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life

is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of

it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all

backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in

an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a

gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young

enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you

get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you

play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go

back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating...

..and you finish off as an orgasm."

Again this is one of the few who actually brought moisture to my eyes. You will be missed and I will cherish the memories of sneaking upstairs to listen to you on an LP.

It was YOUR SHOW :(

This is not only one of the first albums I ever purchased but probably my first ever comedy record purchase ever. It's been many moons ago now but I'm pretty certain I picked it up from the budget section of Woolworth's or Rose's way back in the mid to early 70s. Carlin has always been one of my very favorites but as others have noted he seemed to be getting more and more pissed off in recent years. To me, that tended to detract from his routine as it seemed to rob it of it's comedic edge (or perhaps that's exactly what he wanted). Either way, he was definitely one of the greats and will most definitely be very missed.
