That guy' has a name and the 'levity' of this thread unraveled when Strider tried to make some kind of serious 'point'. Didn't you read the first page? I was replying to his post. :rolleyes:

4th July is an oxymoron. Fine, have fun and enjoy it. Drink beer, eat hotdogs and play with fireworks etc etc but don't try and tell me it was all about freedom and liberty because it clearly wasn't.

People can believe and feel that the 4th of July is whatever they want it to be to them. You have no right to tell them they're wrong. Just like Christmas and Easter and Thanksgiving and other holidays have meanings to people that may not be shared by others. If that's what he thinks the 4th of July is, that's what he thinks it is.

I happen to think that the 4th of July is an important day for Americans, for what it represents to us and what it meant to the founding of this nation. You're free to think otherwise but don't tell me I'm wrong.

The Colonists had more freedoms and a higher standard of living than Brits back home. They always got away with paying far less taxes than the Brits back home yet still enjoyed the protection the British gave them from other colonial powers (see The French and Indian War). The Colonials didn't want to 'rebel' in 1750s when France was a potential threat to their hitherto happy existance.

After the French were nullified as a threat it was largely Colonial businessmen with more of an eye for making money than 'freedom and 'liberty' that were pushing for a break away from Britain....so that they could make even more money.

If the American Revolution was all about 'freedom' and 'liberty' then slavery wouldn't have continued in America for almost another 100 years afterwards.

I'll take our (the U.S.) Constitution and Declaration of Independence, as written, over ANY other Nation's precepts.

The Colonists had more freedoms and a higher standard of living than Brits back home. They always got away with paying far less taxes than the Brits back home yet still enjoyed the protection the British gave them from other colonial powers (see The French and Indian War).

But at least the Brits had representation in Parliment. Whenever you have a system were there is taxation without due representation, then of course there will eventually become a point where colonist are going to feel put upon. Americans had no interest in paying for Britian's European war. It was not our concern.

The Colonials didn't want to 'rebel' in 1750s when France was a potential threat to their hitherto happy existance.

Do you really think Britian would have acted in any other manner concerning the French competition for land and influence in North America despite the wishes of the colonists? Britian did not go to war agains the French in North America for any other reason than it was in Britian's interest to do so.

Are we to assume that Britian fought the Japanese in India for sake of the people of India alone?

Which in other words meant the British crown and those companies sanctioned by the crown, would make less money if the Americans won their independece. Of course money had something to do with it. Afterall, we are not communists.

If Britain's presense in America was all about protecting colonist and high standards of living, why didn't Britain end slavery in America before 1776? Besides, Britain only outlawed the overseas trading of slaves in 1807. However Britain continued to allow slavery in her colonies up until 1833... and in some isolated areas for years beyond that.

Was there a need for the American War of Independence? I don't know. Probably not, the USA would've been independent eventually.

Yes, Australia never fought an independence war, that was unecessary for us, but then our historical situation was slightly different to the USA, well similar and dissimilar.

I mean both Australia and the USA sought independence within 150 years of the beginning of colonisation, but I guess the basic difference is that British migration to the USA was based on people wanting to get away from Britain, whereas British migration to Australia, in the beginning, was generally forced.

So it, i think, resulted in two different mindsets in both countries, with the USA wanting a forced break with Britain and Australia wanting independence but happy to retain close ties with Britain.

It has to be said though yes there were hard times living in British Colonies, Ireland would've had to have been the worst, but that was because the British were so intent on breaking the Irish. But there would've been worser places than Britain in which to live back in those days. Britain did poses, compared to other countries, and due to its constitutional monarchy system, a reasonably healthy democracy and a freedom of speech that was not found in France, Spain, Austria, Germanic territories, Prussia etc.

Well it is the truth, whats wrong with that, does it hurt you or something.

As a free country with freedom of speech why cant we express ourselves without worrying about people getting upset about what is happening all around us.

As for being Xenophobic, I freely admit that I am. I like in fear of immigrants every day, White as well as Black. They have helped to destroy the very fabric of the Country i have lived in all my life.

I am neither proud or embarrassed by what I say as it is the truth. However anyone on here can disagree and rebuke me for what I say as it is a free society, just try and see the bigger picture for once and ask your self if you are happy with your little world. Many of us in England are not, but can do nothing about it except moan. There will be no Revolution for us.

I don't find xenophobia/bigotry/racism/homophobia/sexism/Antisemitism or any other kind of demographic-based hatred amusing. So yeah, I do have a problem with it. Are there immigrants who come to a country and then commit crimes, behave poorly and basically make themselves look like complete tools? Yes. Should you fear ALL immigrants based on the derelict actions of a group of them? No, you shouldn't. At least, that's how I was raised. I dislike those who actually do something wrong, not people who just happen to share the same ethnic makeup as those who have done something wrong.

If a woman walks into a grocery store and steals something, and you as the check-out person see this and are scared she might be packing heat or something, does that mean every time a woman walks into the store, you should cower in fear? Ummmm, no. Replace the word "woman" with any other demographic and the same thing applies.

You shouldn't punish the whole for the actions of the part.

Wait a minute, I did not say I hate them anywhere because I don't.

The trouble over here is getting worse day by day, there have been over 20 different races, cultures, and peoples moving in to the area where I live since my sons started secondary school, in 10 years. It has cause so much unrest amongst every one, including the the immigrants.

All my kids have had to deal with people in their school who are in their twenties but say that they are 13 or 14 so as they can get in to school.

Many come from war zones, Kosovo, Somalia, West Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan, these people have seen death daily and they don't fuck about being nice to settle an argument like our nice white boys. Its either a knife, gun or a gang that settle all disagreements now, with deadly effect.

I just want them gone from England so as we can live in peace, we have a right to that don't we? And to tell the truth unless you have experienced it first hand then you don't know how you would react.

There are plenty of great places in Chicago and then there's some not-so-great places, but my parents raised me not to live in fear. When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Please don't make this personal, I don't hate immigrants. I just don't like them here where I live. Don't mean to be picky but it was Great Britain that you were at war with not us English.

We wish we could have joined you as the 51st state and free us of this pile of shit that rule our Great country. I live in London, according to the news today another seven people knifed to death this week in this Great city of ours, by black immigrants!!! Do i wish I lived in a safe free country, like where? You bet.

Speak for yourself, please. I am ashamed that a fellow countryman would make a post like this.

Oh and BTW - Guy Fawkes night is basically an excuse for big bonfires to cook bangers on, lots of fireworks, and FUN. It is not taken as a serious national celebration by any Brit now - I would say most could not give a s**t about the history behind it - it's just fun.
