Zoso2112 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Hi, just recently I have been really getting into 60's music. I want some suggestions of some bands to listen too. What I would mostly like to listen to from this period would be anything that is psychodelic or blues. Some of the bands that I've been listening too are Ten Years After, The Bluesbreakers, the Yardbirds (of course), Vanilla Fudge, The Small Faces, The Jeff Beck Group, Hendrix, Cream, and many more. Thanks in advance guys. Quote
Jarlaxle 56 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) The Velvet Underground are a very interesting group, I would check them out if I were you. Also, pretty much any Jazz. Miles Davis is considered one of the Jazz masters. Edited July 14, 2008 by Jarlaxle 56 Quote
Zoso2112 Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the quick reply! Album suggestins of different bands would also be nice. Edited July 14, 2008 by Zoso2112 Quote
zosodude13 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 a good place to start... Psychedelic: 13th Floor Elevators The United States of America and a personal favorite... MC5 Quote
The Pagemeister Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 If you don't have The Ultimate Yardbirds CD, that is a great collection. Also check out Janis Joplin: Quote
Zoso2112 Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 If you don't have The Ultimate Yardbirds CD, that is a great collection. Also check out Janis Joplin: Wow, awesome song. Thanks alot. Quote
Jarlaxle 56 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 The album "Blues" by Jimi Hendrix is fantastic (if you don't already have it that is) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_(album) Quote
Footsteps of Dawn Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) edit: hur hur, you just said the Bluesbreakers. Sorry about that. How about The Pretty Things? Their self-titled 1965 album is very blues-based (duh, since there's a bunch of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry songs on it), while their album "S.F. Sorrow" is more psychedelic. Both are good. I love the self-titled a lot, though...they're a lot like the Rolling Stones (which makes sense because Mick and Keith were both in the band before they formed the Stones), but this album sounds a lot more raucous than the Stones' 1965 release, "Out of Our Heads," (except for Satisfaction, of course; that's about as rowdy as it gets). Oh, and how about "Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo" by (who else) The Status Quo? That's a pretty cool psychedelic album. Edited July 14, 2008 by Footsteps of Dawn Quote
~tangerine~ Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) Two of my favs: The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I also like The Moody Blues (more so in the 70's), The Kinks and Traffic. Edited July 14, 2008 by ~tangerine~ Quote
Dancin'Days Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) Terry Reid is quite good. He was also a choice by Jimmy for the singer of Led Zepp. I would recommend Bang Bang and Superlungs. Edited July 14, 2008 by Dancin'Days Quote
Dancin'Days Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 (edited) I would also recommend John Mayall, The Turning Point for the bluesy/jazzy side of the house. Edited July 14, 2008 by Dancin'Days Quote
jimmie ray Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Here's 2 good live albums: Jefferson Airplane - "Bless it's Pointed Little Head". Recorded at the Fillmore in 1968. It rocks and has some trippy songs. The electric bass work on some songs is absolutely amazing! Hot Tuna - "Hot Tuna. Recorded at Berkley in 1970. Acoustic blues from the guitarist and bassist from the above group. Lots of traditional blues songs, all great versions. The acoustic bass work on some songs is absolutely amazing! Quote

TheZeppyWanderer Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Mine was going to be The Move. Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Roy Wood before ELO came into existence. Good call. I saw Roy at his last gig only a few weeks ago - walked on to rapturous applause, went straight in to California Man, and surely played as well as ever. fantastic Quote
JethroTull Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Hey, let's not forget Bubblegum. Plus a whole bunch of others, John Freddie and his Playboy Band, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Paul Revere and the Raiders, 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Happenings, The Turtles, The Grassroots, Take a Letter Maria. I'm so high right now. Quote
