In The Evening

This is one of my favorite Page solos even though it is not one of my favorite Zep songs. I do not play guitar myself so I don't know if it is a technically difficult solo, but it rocks nontheless. How do you rate this solo compared to others that are more famous (Heartbreaker, STH, etc)? First post, be easy.

I always thought the song was underrated among Zep fans and practically unknown among causal listeners of the band's material. I think it's probably one of their Top 5 songs. That latter period doesn't get enough attention, I don't think.

Compared to the solos in more recognizable songs, I think it's at a disadvantage.

Yeah. In the evening ,would be up there for a solo pick/rating. but besides led zeppelin ;listen to songs outside the band in his session days like Donavon Frankenreiter "Hurdy gurdy man" and joe cocker with a little help from my friends. These are songs that go to show that jimmy can play awesome solos (you can always pick his style of playing) with who ever he chooses to play for or with and can blend/fit the solo around whoever the vocalist maybe.I really don't know what is holding him back from doing something NEW with a different vocalist now .He's got a willing and able bass player and a drummer who want to make music,

Right on! That's what I want to see as well.

I'm not sure that he actually did play on Hurdy Gurdy Man", I think that is a common mistake. He may have played on another Donavon track I think.

Firstly, it's Donovan Leitch.

I'll think you'll find that Jimmy, Jonesy and Bonzo ALL played on that song!

This is Donavon's official site (still under construction), some links work though.

The In the Evening solo certainly showed Jimmy trying new tricks right up until the end; on a record that he had far less input than any since the creation of the band. Great solo!

For those who don't know how he accomplished that sound at the beginning of the solo; he Started playing with the whammy bar suppressed so the strings were very loose (for those unaccustomed to playing the guitar-this would give the strings a lower tone and note) and as he started playing he released the whammy bar restoring the strings to their usual tuning.

Neat trick!

don't believe that shit.

jimmy can be heard to deny playing on that song in response to a question from a call-in fan on 'rockline' syndicated radio program in 1988 (outrider publicity).

as for the history of who was where, when and was donovan tripping, i will leave any potential thread derailing to : swandown (who probably could give two shits since he's been answering this question for over a decade at least)

Thanks very much for that info! "In the Evening" is one of Pagey's great solos. To me, it always sounded as if Jimmy was almost literally ripping the strings off the guitar - incredibly violent & impassioned, then it segues into this lovely, soothing passage. And that's why he's the Six-String Messiah :)

P.S. I think the guitarist on Hurdy Gurdy Man was a former member of The Strawbs named Alan Parker. IIRC, Jonesy said so.

I LOVE the entire song and the absolutely incredible guitar solo on "In the Evening." ITTOD is not my favorite Zep album, primarily because my husband and I were together by time it was released and we were too busy traveling to give it a good listen but I think that, along with "In the Evening", the guitar solos in "South Bound Suarez" and "I'm Gonna Crawl" (the other two songs that I like on ITTOD) are fantastic too. Those three songs, as great as they are, are hard for me to listen to because, when I hear them, they give me glimpses of and remind me of what great music LZ would have created if Bonzo not died and if the band survived into the 80's.

I'd always wondered about that, thanks!

This is such a great song even without Jimmy's solo. :o Robert opened with it at the Arthur Lee benefit show last year, and it absolutely took my breath away.
