eMMi
guess it just fits.. like.. Led Zeppelin came down on people like a God's hammer. also, obviously, there's the matter of that line being in a song.
Uncle Bill
Immigrant Song Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow, >from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. The hammer of the gods Will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming! On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow, >from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. How soft your fields so green, Can whisper tales of gore, Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords. On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. So now youd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, For peace and trust can win the day Despite of all your losing.

I thought maybe it had something doing with Plant beeing in Island and the vikings, you know Thor the god with the hammer? Hugs

lucyinthesky
I think it is a quote from Jimmy too, isn't it even in the book. Seeing Tour Photos he said:"I want Power, Mystery and the Hammer of the gods. Was around 77 if I remeber right. ROCK ON!

MadScreamingGallery
We knew it was a line from the Immigrant Song but my friends and I also referred to the years from '73-'77 as Zep's "Hammer of the Gods" years because the band and the Zep guys were so incredibly powerful. SteveAJones
One night in Jimmy's hotel suite a photographer (I think it was Neal Preston) ran a slide show of the images he had captured of Jimmy on the '77 tour so far. As each image was revealed Jimmy responded with a negative comment or self-deprecating remark about his physical appearance such as "Belly" or "Crows feet". Exasperated, the photographer asked Jimmy what he was looking for. "Power, Mystery and The Hammer of The Gods" came the reply. Years later, author Stephen Davis used Jimmy's response for the title of his book.

Alick
Hammer of the Gods - Thor's hammer, known as Mjolnir ("crusher") to vikings. Thor was the God of thunder, and Mjolnir had the power to throw lightning bolts. "Hammer of the Gods will drive our ships to new land" could refer to thunder, which vikings must have thought sounded like the hammer of Gods. I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but the vikings may have found the new land by accident, when on one occasion their ships were caught in a thunderstorm (or were forced to change direction because of the storm) and got away from their normal route. You're welcome, Linda. I always thought that the title of the book came from the lyrics of the Immigrant song too. I'm sure that there is no way that the author of the book could have known that many fans, including my friends and I, used the expression "Hammer of the Gods" to describe Zep. Hugs to you too. steverino
"Blood, Thunder and The Hammer of the Gods. " Plant describing the new tour in "People" magazine(Go Figure), 1976 or 1977. I could probably dig through my archives and find the actual cover and story.
Alice75
I found Jimmy's interview about this book as follows, but he,Robert (also John Paul?) and Peter were all angry about this book. Why do they despise this book so much? If the facts were recorded, they might not have been angry so much. I think that if only the lies are written in the nonfiction book, it is quite worthless as the book. I have not read it yet,but I can read a part of it in amazon com. Q:Did you read what was written about Zeppelin in "Hammer Of the Gods"? JP: No; I read bits. I couldn’t read it all through because it was crap. What did you want to know about that? Q:I was just curious if you’d read it and what you thought about it? JP: Well, it’s someone trying to make a buck out of Zeppelin, isn’t it?
