ZeppFanForever Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 This is for all of my fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics to answer. WHAT WAS THE CRAZIEST THING THAT YOU EVER DID IN A THEATER WHILE WATCHING THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME? As for me, there are also many to tell but I'll begin with two of them. One of them, I lit a joint in the auditorium and the ashes landed on my seat which would catch on fire. Here I am running up and down the aisle hitting my ass hoping that it wouldn't catch fire. The other one was when a couple of friends and I lit 3 bottle rockets in the auditorium and they hit the ceiling leaving three black marks with one of the bottle rockets landing on the curtain and catching fire. After that, the manager stopped the film for 20 minutes, used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire and grabbed all three of us and escorted us out of the theater. How bout all of you? AGAIN, I KNOW THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE STORIES TO TELL, I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO HEAR THEM. ROCK ON! Quote

I remember sitting with my bud's watching in the balcony (smoking and drinking) when Bonzo started his drum solo.... I jumped up and yelled THATS ME !!!!!! That’s right; I am in the movie....... Unfortunately I did not get mentioned in the credits...... LOL Quote

AGAIN, I KNOW THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE STORIES TO TELL, I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO HEAR THEM. ROCK ON! How's it going fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics? I guess it is time for me to tell you one of my experiences of what it was like to be at a midnight movie in the late 1970's to watch THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. It was the summer of 1979 and Friday night in Sacramento, California. Two of my friends and I decided that we wanted to take a break from our girlfriends and go to the Capitol Theater on Watt Ave. (Now torn down) and see THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME at the midnight movies. When we showed up at the theater at 11:20 P.M., it was obvious that it was going to be a packed wild crowd. The Hells Angels blessed us with their presence as well as other gang members, tons of drug dealers selling dope which turned the theater into a drug store and three hookers which were dying to f*c* anyone in the bathroom that was willing to pay for it. It was a wild night indeed. Before the movie even started, two guys lit the screen curtains on fire resulting in everyone evacuating the building. By the time we got back inside the building, the first three rows of seats on the left side of the theater were jerked off the concrete floor courtesy of The Hells Angels. Outside of the theater, you have never seen so much dope smoke, used syringes on the ground, cracked bongs and broken bottles of JD, Southern Confort and Early Times scattered all over the parking lot. Both of my friends and I were seasoned pros when it came to lighting bottle rockets in the theaters. When we lit them, we got cheers of approval from the crowd. 1 hour and 40 minutes had elapsed and the movie still hasn't even started. The whole crowd started yelling "START THE F*C*ING MOVIE!" After about 20 minutes, the movie began only to be interupted again by numerous smoke bombs. The Manager of the theater came to the front of the theater and warned us that if our bad behavior continues, there will be no movie at all tonight. 5 minutes later, two Hells Angels jumped two of the theater staff and got everyone thrown out of the theater. Dozens of Police cars showed up in the parking lot and started arresting Hells Angels as well as many other people around the theater premises. Evidently, the theater mnagement wanted the Hells Angels out of the theater which they did successfully. The theater opened its doors once again and let the people in that were still in the parking lot. When all of us got into the theater, I noticed that the theater was less than one quarter full. The movie did not start until almost 4:00 A.M. in the morning. My friends and I did not even get home until after 7:00 A.M. My then girlfriend Donna thought that I was cheating on her. I told her everything that happened that night and she did not even believe me. That night would be the last time that I ever went out with the guys again alone without Donna. Oh well, shit happens! ROCK ON! Quote

I would love to see THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME in a IMAX theater wouldn't you? ROCK ON! Well actually. I saw TSRTS more than 100 times at the old midnight movies back in the day. We used to walk into the theaters at The Market Place in Long Beach, CA with bongs in our hands. No one gave a shit. We has different joints for different songs. Sometimes a bit of acid. But I can't say I'd be excited about bottle rockets, fire extinguishers and the film being delayed 20 minutes midway. That could've easily been a major buzzkill. If I wanted to get crazy, I'd have hopped over to Rocky Horror in the next theater and lobbed a fish at the screen! That would've been appreciated! I know, cause it was!! I guess the crziest thing I did at TSRTS was get up under the screen and air guitar every note and move of Jimmy's. I had it down to a science! Oh, and I left out the part where I would go in a cheesy ass dragon suit my mom made for me. THAT was probably the craziest thing of all! Standing line listening to people saying "Look at those shoes". Edited August 28, 2008 by Evster2012 Quote

Del Zeppnile Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) Great thread idea!!!! For years TSRTS played every Saturday with a Midnight show at the old United Artist theater on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena Califronia. My buddies and I found ourselves there many times when there wasn't much else going on, and we were always certain to hook up with other friends while waiting in line for the doors to open. Obviously pot and beer were a common theme with the crowd, and who doesn't remember having their beer knocked over by another beer bottle rolling down towards the screen under the seats One particular night I was really, really stoned, and during the scene with Jimmy Page's guitar solo on SIBLY; the film apperently jamed in the film projector and it melted. However, I was so stoned that at the moment the film frame was melting and every thing stopped including the sound... I was tripping out about why I didn't remember ever seeing that part in the probably 50 other times I had seen the movie before. And even after the house lights in the theater came up -- in my mind I could still here the music playing (it was not) and I kept saying to my buddy next to me, "FAR OUT! --this is so cool I never saw this version before." My buddy looked at me like I was either nuts... or that Tommy Chong guy from Cheech & Chong. If I wanted to get crazy, I'd have hopped over to Rocky Horror in the next theater and lobbed a fish at the screen! That would've been appreciated! I know, cause it was!! Speaking of Rocky Horror, many times on the way to see TSRTS my buddies and I would drive by the "freak show" standing in line to see Rocky Horror's midnight showing down the road at the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena and we would throw eggs or whatever we had at those nutters. BTW, the only "interactive" part I recall from the any TSRTS shows was during the part where the message delivery guy on the bicycle would appear on the screen as he rode his bike to Robert Plant's home, and everyone in the theater would yell, "GEEK" and "NERD" at the goofy delivery kid. Anybody remember that? Oh, and I left out the part where I would go in a cheesy ass dragon suit my mom made for me. THAT was probably the craziest thing of all! Standing line listening to people saying "Look at those shoes". That was you Ev? Fucking hysterical! Here is a photo of the old United Artist Theater in Pasadena from many, many years ago. The theater is still there, but it has been gutted for retail store space now. Edited August 28, 2008 by Del Zeppnile Quote

Actually that sounds pretty cool- I've seen TSRTS many times in the theater (back in the days) and I never saw anyone dress up like any of the band. You wouldn't happen to have a pic of that, would you? Quote

Dirigiblicus Maximus Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 One of the fun memories of the 70's thats for sure - midnight movies. Berating the wasted chicks who would insist on getting up in front of the screen and dance through the songs... "who called me a bitch?? - f-you!!..." tee hee I remember Rocky Horror... barely. What about that Rock Supershow where you saw that early Zep doing D&C? I thought Jimmy looked freaking cool in that leather jacket and strat. Then the next day the theatre played Godzilla movies with that Sensurround. Great way to cure that hangover Awsome Quote

Standing line listening to people saying "Look at those shoes". How's it going "Evster?" I'm on my break right now but I just had to comment what you said about seeing The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I have so many fond memories of seeing that movie at the midnight movies. Everytime I went to see that movie, I took white bed sheets with me (I looked like I was either going to a toga party or to a Ku Klux Klan rally) along with squirt guns filled with ink. The best place to sit in the theater was in the middle. I swear, we would throw all kinds of shit at each other. By the time I came out of the theater, I was soaked with mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, rice and with soda. It was like going to a real food fight. I nailed this one dude real good with my squirt gun and he had ink all over himself. The bitch of it all is that we all felt sorry for the theater staff that had to clean up all of the mess that we created. Those were the days indeed, ROCK ON! Quote
JTM Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I remember that TSRTS opened on either the 10 or 11 Nov 76 here in Liverpool (England), showing at the only cinema capable of playing surround sound..........I was at the first showing on the opening afternoon. Craziness was not an option as at the most there were 30 people in attendance. I spent some of my time ther moving from seat to seat trying to find a sweet spot to enjoy the full glory of JPs guitar swirling around the theatre but the sound was absolute crap...really disapointing in fact................ bonzo1026 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 I once yelled, 'SHOW US YOUR EYES JIMMY!' THERE'S a flashback! We used to yell the same thing! I used to go see it at the State Theater in Newark, DE in thhe arly '80's when I was in high schoool. They played it every Sat. night before Rocky Horror and every Tues. and Thurs. night. I never missed one. We would always coax fans of other bands to come see it so we could prove to them why Zeppelin was better than their favorite band. We'd get them all smoked up and "Zeppelinize" them and afterwards, Zep became their favorite band! LOL Good times! Quote
