Cofa
Robert made a not too unexpected guest appearance on Saturday night at Fairport Convention’s annual Cropredy Festival. This year marks 30 years since the passing of Sandy Denny so Fairport dedicated a large section of their set to her work. After a number of other guest singers performing Sandy’s songs, Robert was introduced by his old mate Dave Pegg. There was obviously only going to be one song and what followed was a stunning and very emotional version of Battle of Evermore with Mr Plant ably backed by the Fairport guys and with Kristina Donahue taking the Sandy vocals.(Kristina is the daughter of one time Fairport member Jerry Donahue) At the end of the song the rest of the band left the stage and Robert proceeded to say a few words about Sandy and introduce a video and picture montage of Sandy’s life that was displayed on the big screen at the back of the stage. All in all a brilliant and very moving tribute to Britain’s greatest female singer. There can’t have been many dry eyes in that field. In fact there was very little that was dry in that field as it had rained all day! Believe me though it was worth getting wet and muddy for. maven2blue
I enjoyed reading the comments on the youtube video of the Battle of Evermore. Especially the ones about the police leaving with Robert after the song. Blue lights flashing.

mos6507
Nobody knows how to play that damn manodlin part right. Not Fairport convention and not Robert's band.
Cofa
Nobody knows how to play that damn manodlin part right. Not Fairport convention and not Robert's band. It's not wrong it is just very slightly different to the original. Chris Leslie is a fab mandolin player and a hugely talented multi instrumentalist. At this point he had already completed a 3 hour set with Fairport on vocals, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki, violin and other. I think he can be forgiven if his performance didn't meet your exacting 'note for note to the original' standard. Anyway! I was there and it sounded great to me and I didn't hear any complaints from the other 18,000 people in the crowd. Perhaps you could have done it better? Knebby
I was there too and I agree that it doesn't sound perfect - and didn't on the night either. Robert also forgot a lot of words. Still was a fun part of the night. And I don't think what Mos said was that contentious - I've never heard it played as well as by the originals. Commenting on that isn't the same as saying he could have done it better.

Did you get wet Knebby? Also did you see Legend earlier in the day? I thought they were brill!
