I know some people on here do not like this band but I find them to be incredible. I honestly think you need to see them live before you can make an opinion. Seeing them up close is truly a mind-blowing experience because it's like seeing Hendrix with Pink Floyd. The musicians in this band are by far the best around. The drummer alone is sick to see live. I wish I could give a setlist but I really do not know the names of the songs (except for the Widow which was played). They played over two hours with the first song clocking in over twenty minutes. Good times with a amazing band!!

Here's a setlist from another show....this might be what they played:

Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)

Viscera Eyes

Wax Simulacra

Goliath

Conjugal Burns

Tetragrammaton

Agadez

Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus

Metatron

Drunkship Of Lanterns

Ilyena

Meccamputechture

Aberinkula

Day Of The Baphomets

I SO wanted to go! It was a crazy week. I saw them at Roseland for the "Frances the Mute" tour a couple of years ago. Shades of Zep if I must say so. Glad you enjoyed the show.

How was the crowd? Was it packed? How was the sound?

It was packed (SB is a very small venue) and the crowd was very into it. Sound was great but a little louder than I wanted. I had to put some earplugs in. Great show.

They are an AWESOME band, Wolfman. I had a chance to see them live only once, here in Sydney and it was just unbelievable. I read somewhere here in the forum someone saying that maybe these days we are not ready for a band like The Mars Volta them, probably in a few years time. So true. Their sound and music is so innovative. Their mix of different musical genres and sounds is just genial.

...and I am with you. This band live is so energetic, passionate, full on, intense and musically super competent. You just need to see them playing live to appreciate their talent.

Sounds like you had an amazing time. :D I've actually not listened to very much of them but plan to really soon.

I agree with both of you. Their sound initially appealed more to my husband than me but, after we heard them live, three years ago, I realized that they are, as you both say, incredible, innovative, energetic, passionate, and intense. We saw them at a fairly small venue and when they returned this year, to the same venue, tickets were sold out so we, unfortunately, missed seeing them. The face value of the tickets for the '05 show and this year's show wasn't that high but, after this year's show sold out, tickets were selling on the secondary market for $100+ each. Mars Volta are scheduled to play this coming weekend at Austin City Limits.
