Cryptopsy (Technical Death Metal)

Kreator (German Thrash Metal, better than Metallica and Megadeth)

When you say better than Megadeth and Metallica, which bit of the song are you saying is better ?? its faster but not better in my opinion .

I actually like Burzum. o_O

Oh my God. I would definitely NOT have pegged you as the type to listen to Black Metal. Let alone Burzum. Varg Vikernes seems like a bit of a wacko/asshole type, you know the whole burning down churches and stabbing your former bandmate 70 times in the face...

Well I think the vocals are a lot better, solos are cooler, drums are more technical. But of course (early) Metallica and Megadeth have the upper hand simply because they were extremely original I guess. Its all personal opinion, but if you like Thrash metal Kreator are one of the best from the 80s. And they're still making good stuff!

Slayer are probably the heaviest of the "big four" also, so they would've influenced Kreator more than the others.

There's a very fine line for metal, that when it crosses it, the music has lost all it's sould and passion. A perfect example is Dream Theater. Lord knows they are some amazing musicians, but the music has no feeling or emotion to it. It's not just because it's technical, i dunno, it just loses me there.

Metallica is where i draw that line. I'm not a huge fan, but anything heavier than that i don't like. If it's lighter than that, it depends on the band.

My tastes in metal go like this:

Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush (1st album only), etc. Early, slow, heavy, amazing.

...from there, I do like plenty of 80's hair metal. Motley Crue, and others like that. note: POISON IS NOT METAL!!! THEY ARE AN EMBARRASMENT TO ROCK N ROLL!!

Iron Maiden is a huge fave, although i don't know where to classify them. And that's about it.

I know, right? I have to admit that I actually do love Hvis lyset tar oss a lot. It's so ethereal. I've heard most of his other stuff (even his two prison albums which I like) but Hvis lyset tar oss is the best. If there's more black metal like that album, I might like it.

I've sort of wandered into liking various metal bands lately, which is odd as I'm 52. I particularly liked Doomsword and have found Aman Amarth, Bal Sagorth and Candlemass very interesting. Some of the folk metal stuff is good too - Korpiklaani, Cruachan, Waylander, Primordial, Turisas.

The one thing that irritates me slightly is the vocals - some of the lyrics are really interesting, but the growling/ snarling style of vocals obscures them. I'd prefer it if the vocals were clean

It is funny :)

Agreed, even funnier is the list of "cores". (Which are 99% garbage imo, just a terrible terrible idea to try and fuse Hardcore Punk and Metal)

Metalcore

Grindcore

Deathcore

Mathcore

Hatecore

Mallcore

Emocore

Screamocore

Rapcore

Blackcore

Whalecore

Thrashcore

I shudder even thinking about how awful all of it is.

Never heard of Folk Metal before. What other bands would classify as this?

My favourite example are probably Korpiklaani (who would have thought that an accordian would be a metal instrument!). Cruachan and Waylander would probably qualify too.

I go through my metal moods every so often. Not right now, really.

But I mostly like hardcore metal, stuff around there.

Misery Signals

The Fall of Troy

Norma Jean

Throwdown

Scary Kids Scaring Kids

Circle Takes The Square

John Henry Vs. The Machine

Lower Definition

I'm not a fan of the "shouting" vocals predominant in Metalcore...

The way I see it, if you are going to yell or scream, don't do it halfassed. Most metalcore screams sound like they are angry at their parents, I like it more extreme where it sounds like they are Satan incarnate. :P

But yeah, to each their own, etc... etc.. I don't mind anyone else enjoying it. At least you're trying new music.

I recently saw the film Metal: A Headbangers Journey, which is a documentary on Metal, its origins and styles, its censorship etc. It's very interesting, but it failed to cover any of the Finnish metal. Finland is really huge in Metal, probably the best country for Metal, although Norway is a decent competitor.
