Sibh23
What was the last show that the band just kind of jammed? Carrying out songs and what not. Improvisation was always a main feature of the band, or a show completely carried by improvisations, it's really hard, depending on your viewpoint it might be a large variety of shows, but I find the band until 73 expanding their musical limits. So for that criteria 29/07/73 New York, but IMO all shows carried over the improvisation, so mine is 7/07/80.
ZepFanatic
^I agree...by '75 Dazed was rigidly structured and in '77 there was hardly no improv...I *do* think the NQ's from '75 and '77 were fantastic improvs (for the most part) however... The jazz section in No Quarter on 3/21/75 Seattle and 3/25/75 L.A. Forum are great. But your are right. There was pretty much no improv in the 1977 shows with No Quarter being the only exception. Maybe the 75 dazeds wer'nt that rigidly structured, compare 11.3 to 21.3 for instance, or what about the Drifters turning up on 25.3!! JRomero
Knebworth 8/11/1979 Darn! I forgot about those performances! Let me refine my question: When was the last time Jimmy used the 12 string neck on his Gibson EDS-1275 double neck to play Celebration Day live? He used to do this in the early seventies, but I'm not sure when he stopped. I believe there is a video floating around of this, as well.

JimmyPageZoSo56
Celebration Day was played in 71 and 73. Thats not what I was talking about and like ZepFanatic said, he never used the doubleneck in 1973
Sibh23
Thats not what I was talking about and like ZepFanatic said, he never used the doubleneck in 1973 Boil this down: 1971: Les Paul 1973: Les Paul 1979: Bottom neck of the double neck guitar.. A small doubt though, in 1971 Celebration Day followed Stairway, could he have done both on the double neck? The confirmation would be a pic of Page with the double neck and Jones on bass. But for now I'm truly convinced it's the Les Paul.
JRomero
The confirmation would be a pic of Page with the double neck and Jones on bass. But for now I'm truly convinced it's the Les Paul. I found these two photos in the photo section of this website: The first photo is from Hawaii and the second is from Dundee. Both taken in 1971. Although, the first photo seems to show him using the six string neck. Also, check out the the last portion of this video, just after the Moby Dick segment: LedZeppelin.com - Videos - Houston '71 Taken from an interview with Jimmy Page in Guitar World Magazine, circa 1993: There's about three or four riffs going down on that one, isn't there? Half was done with a guitar in standard tuning and the other half was done on slide guitar tuned to an open A, I think. We put that together at Headley Grange. Because we rented the Rolling Stones' mobile recording studio, we could relax and take our time and develop the songs in rehearsals... I do not remember too much about that song other than that and what I told you earlier about the opening being erased. I used to play the whole thing live on my electric 12-string. I hope this is enough evidence.

JRomero
So.... is anyone going to agree with me that Jimmy used the 12 string neck on his Gibson EDS-1275 for Celebration Day in 1971?
Sibh23
So.... is anyone going to agree with me that Jimmy used the 12 string neck on his Gibson EDS-1275 for Celebration Day in 1971? He could, but I do think he mainly used the 6 string neck, but be advised, Jimmy was an extremely spontaneous player that year, he could do just about anything on guitar if he wanted, like using different guitars for certain songs (like in my theory Celebration Day) or he could have used both necks for it (not in a single live version, just different live versions), so thanks a lot for your previous yet tantalizing research, we're getting close to the truth and I can feel it. Zachman
I'm gonna have to go with 7/24/1977 when he sang on The Battle of Evermore for the last time. That could be considered a lead vocal, maybe. So, before that, I would say 5/25/1975 when he sang backup on Tangerine. u are right i have the dvd of that performance.. sounds great
Sibh23
u are right i have the dvd of that performance.. sounds great Mmmmh, curious because of the bad mix, you can't actually hear the 4 part harmony.... *on the soundboard versions, it's all present on the audience recordings. wilsoncb420
When was the last time Robert Plant sang the first "Many times I've loved" line in Over The Hills And Far Away correctly live?Bring this up because its a great song and something I've hunted for years back... Last time would be 6.28.72 (I think, if it wasn't played that night, 6.27.72) but he came close to the high notes many times (did OK) on the Japan '72 leg. Not sure if he went for it during the late '72 gigs, but by '73 the vocal part was changed to a lower register. What I find fascinating is that his voice was doing so well in June '77, especially New York and LA, there IS one New York '77 gig where he goes for the high notes in Over the Hills and Far Away. Strider
So.... is anyone going to agree with me that Jimmy used the 12 string neck on his Gibson EDS-1275 for Celebration Day in 1971? Umm, yeah. Frankly, until this thread was dug up today I had no idea that this was a matter of contention. I mean, just one listen to any of the 1971 "Celebration Day"s and you can hear the difference in tone.Bring this up because its a great song and something I've hunted for years back... Last time would be 6.28.72 (I think, if it wasn't played that night, 6.27.72) but he came close to the high notes many times (did OK) on the Japan '72 leg. I think the question delt not just with the matter of Robert singing the high melody line just like the record, but also singing the proper lyrics. For some reason known only to Robert, he stopped singing the proper opening verse "Many have I loved, many times been bitten" after the 1972 tour. The speculation is it had something to do with his wife...maybe Robert felt uncomfortable singing that line.
