bigzepfan
Add one more to the Arthur Lee Tribute show crowd. Definitely an awesome show. I don't think I've ever seen Robert appear so casual and at ease on stage before that. He definitely seemed to have a great time.
bigzepfan
Yes, I never get why people are mad at him playing Zep songs. Musicians play music which they love, and Robert do love those songs. Since declining to go on tour with jjj or even do one other show that's gonna happen even more. Seeing him sing zep songs with Alison or even at the arthur lee concert is practically painful. Sure, it's great music and she is an extremely talented singer, but then the band kicks in and all of a sudden you say to yourself - this is not even close to what it could be... And then you say to yourself: and everyone wants in except Robert. Anyway to keep "in thread" there can never be a replacement for Robert Plant. Jimmy now knows it and that's why he gave up. sucks! Robert's Plant
I think Robert is in an extremely difficult position. I apologize to him and his fans for all of the angry thoughts I have had over the years. I think Robert is a true rock talent of legendary proportions. When did he decline do one other show? I only remember him saying "it would be fun to play together from time to time" or "we can do it again when there are good reasons", though it's true he doesn't want to tour. I can understand your feeling, but "be mad at him" is another thing. Fans feel hurt and disppointed, those are very natural emotions, but I think some words used here on him(not by you!) are beyond the limit. And I guess there is a fine difference between "find a replacement for Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin" and "find a singer for the new project." I don't think I've ever seen Robert appear so casual and at ease on stage before that. He definitely seemed to have a great time. It was one of my favorite shows I've seen of his that's for sure. Amazing they had so little rehearsal time and it sounded like they'd been playing together for a long time. I enjoy seeing Robert in these types of situations - I think he does really enjoy performing with different musicians. He said it was the first time he'd worked with American musicians too. Well - to my ears, Robert's post Zep career is anything but painful to listen to. I don't expect the band to sound like Zep and I think it's been a good move on Robert's part to not find Zep clones over the years. I like that he's gone in so many different directions. It's the spirit of Zep in a different venue so to speak.
Fortuna
I don't care what Robert sings. I'll be happy as long as he keeps singing. I love all of it. Edited to add: And he is happy to sing.
linda.
No way. If Robert doesn`t want to join the group as a singer, Zeppelin should be something we just have to remember as the best ever!!! NOBODY!!! can take his place!! Anyone agrees???? Linda.

Aquamarine
Wow. We were all there? That's cool. P.S. Do you guys know if there is a boot out there of this show? Yes, once again we all went to the same show, separately! I only know of the video boot, too. I also don't feel disappointed when the band kicks in and it's not Zep--the Raising Sand band contained some amazing musicians, like Buddy Miller, for example, and Robert's solo bands over the years have also contained some great musicians who I wasn't expecting to sound exactly like Page or Bonham, so I wasn't disappointed at all. Which is not to say that there wasn't that extra thrill when seeing/hearing him and Jimmy side by side!

It's the spirit of Zep in a different venue so to speak. I feel that Robert's solo stuff is good, some of it great. The only part that is painful is when he plays zep. Sorry, it's just how I feel. Every time I hear his voice, a zep song, and then someone else's guitar kicks in I can't get over the feeling of how much I wished that he was with jimmy. for me they go together like bread and butter and many other of the great metaphors. I respect him greatly as a solo artist and happy that he went his way and did much different stuff than he ever would have done with jimmy. that's one of the reasons that I really loved the tribute show so much because he played, in comparison to the other two times I've seen him without jimmy, so many songs that were not zep and I really really loved hearing him sing other people's stuff and even his own solo stuff. It was a really incredible display of his talents that I had never seen before, even after all these years. Funny thing is - I don't have the same problem with hearing other guitarists play big log or any of his other solo stuff. It's only zep songs that I feel that way. Thinking back to when i saw Robert in pre-unledded I also felt the same way when they played no quarter. just couldn't get over how much better it would be with jimmy playing it. then comes unledded and wic and I feel like Thank God they're together again, then nine years go by, nothing, then reunion. Now everyone is on board to do it again and robert doesn't want to sing the real zeppelin. so he tours with alison and sings a toned down zeppelin. I can see where people are going to feel slighted. If robert and alison tour again it would be more impressive if they didn't play any zep songs. I'm not saying he's not entitled to, because he paid his dues and he absolutely one hundred percent is, but it would be so so impressive if they did a successful tour based on only their songs. it would certainly shut up any disgruntled zep fans, including myself. I can understand your feeling, but "be mad at him" is another thing. Fans feel hurt and disppointed, those are very natural emotions, but I think some words used here on him(not by you!) are beyond the limit. I have made some statements I regret also. Can't take it back. All I can do is apologize, which I do. I certainly don't hate Robert and actually love him to death, but like many I want it my way. And yes, some are just ridiculous. I have a sailors tongue myself more often than I should, but don't recall ever calling any of the band #%&%&#. Only customers and politicians!! And I guess there is a fine difference between "find a replacement for Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin" and "find a singer for the new project." Possibly jimmy realizes it's just not possible, because if he does anything with jpj and jason then it is zep without robert. And since noone can replace Robert... So Jimmy's stuck with nowhere to go, except to move away from jpj and jason. It's the only way to keep the respect and legendary status of zep wholeheartedly intact which, I believe, is the most important to Jimmy. If jjj did tour without Robert I'm positive I would feel the same way as I do when someone else plays guitar for Robert. I would feel that it's painful and I'd be saying to myself...it could be so much more.
glicine
I totally understand what you're saying, really. But you said it "like many I want it my way", you felt painful when he played Zeppelin songs, thinking it would haven been better in Zeppelin. And some other fans would feel painful if he doesn't play Zep songs, thinking he doesn't love Zeppelin anymore(what is not true IMO). Everyone wants it his way, so no matter what Robert Plant does, it just can't satifisy everyone. So I'd say it's the best he decides for himself. And, I can't help but ask, both Jimmy and JPJ have played Zeppelin songs on their tour, did you feel the same?

I never saw JPJ before the reunion. jimmy i saw with the firm and outrider tour. Hearing zep songs was a mixed reaction. first I was happy to hear ANY zeppelin songs but then thought about how much better it could be. Back then, for some reason, i never considered the possibility of zep reforming. Now since there is a remote chance(or should I say was a remote chance) that they do it it hurts more to hear them now.
Aquamarine
I do understand your point, too. But, for example, I don't think Robert does do "toned down" Zeppelin songs with Alison--he does totally rearranged Zeppelin songs (and very few of those), that don't focus on the guitar element. So it's all in the expectations you bring to it. And as they're NOT reforming, personally I'm happy to hear any Zep songs performed in any way by any of them! You are definitely right on with rearranged versus toned down. they are practically different songs with same beat/lyric sort of. Maybe one day I'll be able to hear zep songs live again without my struggle within. At least there's a gazillion new bootlegs I've never heard before available if I ever learn how to download the stuff.

Maybe if you approach listening to Zep songs done by Robert or Jimmy or Jonesy apart without any preconceived feelings about it as well as not expecting it's going to be Zep as we know it, you might have a better experience. There's some great versions of the Zep catalogue they've done over the years

k5ymo
Since Page, Jones and Bonham Jr have decided to have a go at it w/o Plant. WHo do you think would be able to fill his shoes? Terry Reid would be my first choice. Although, I don't know how his voice has held up Ian Gillan's voice sounds as great as it ever did. I think he would work well. Oh please...can we just get over this type of thread!! Jesus, it's getting boring. The year is 2009, not 1973. Just remember how good the band was and take that into your future. If you are bored of this thread simply don't respond! Perhaps you're overlooking the fact that this thread started way back when JP/JPJ/JB were rehearsing and known to be looking for a new singer. Now we've known for some time that they're not doing either of those things. Thus, it makes no difference who we think should sing with them--and in any case the project wasn't intended to be Zeppelin, and the singer thus wouldn't have been "replacing" Robert, no matter how high he could sing.
