zooma
There are so many people posting on this board bashing Robert Plant that it is disgusting. This man has given his whole career to making music for people to enjoy and in thanks he gets ridicule, insults, and mockery for staying true to his own heart. Too bad, for the selfish, that Robert won't indulge them with a tour of greatest hits that they so demand because they were born 10-30 years too late to see the real Zeppelin. Robert Plant is the best vocalist of the rock era and should be RESPECTED by anyone with any appreciation of music. The Plant bashers should go F$#% themselves. True, there is too much keeping up with the Joneses motivating people rather than a real appreciation for his having given everything already. And he himself said he has just begun after how many years to learn to sing harmony? I would imagine him to be getting better and enjoying what he is now doing more. And I would rather someone else do the deed, but I am single and I don't nail just anybody so it just ain't gonna happen.

Seems to me you and Zooma are agreeing that he's only getting better as he tries new things, for which he's to be respected. The only point of disagreement I see is that you don't think he's the greatest vocalist of the rock era. Which is fair enough. (Though I think you're picking on exceptions rather than the rule, with regard to his voice.) The point, as I understood it, was simply that he doesn't deserve all the shit being hurled at him by his former "fans." OK, so I may be misunderstanding somebody completely, so I'm going to go and

Some I think many vocalists have their stremgths and to pin them against each other misses out on the benefits and purpose of music. Yet, I think he is happier now, and it's the rest of the crowd who won't let him go who should go fuck themselves. He is happier now working with Alison than he has ever been. That should thrill peope's souls no matter if they like his work with her or not. Now llet the rest of the band rebuild itself

During the making of Pictures at Eleven, Cozy Powell would often tell Robert Plant to “belt it” and go for the high notes as he used to do in the earlier days of Zeppelin. Robert’s answer was “No I’m done with all that” Listening to albums post Physical Graffiti - it’s easy to see what he meant. The vocal style seemed to completely change during the making of Presence and actually showed Plant as having a much greater range than he had previously displayed. He was sometimes criticized for sounding like “an angry witch” on some of those earlier albums and as a “screaming monkey” on the song remains the same. Tracks like “in My Time of Dying”, one of my favourite Zeppelin songs, contain nothing but frenzied yelps towards the end. Houses of the Holy also contains a lot of high pitched vocalization not favoured by some Zeppelin admirers. It is sometimes felt that the sheer quality and professionalism of the other three was overshadowed by the screaming exhibited by Plant on some occasions. It is therefore easy to see why he ditched the style half way through their career. It is very likely that all subsequent albums made after In Through the Out Door would have contained the serener vocal style - if not for the band’s demise. The deep throngs of I’m Gonna Crawl and the exquisite tones of Sea of Love are much better suited to the whole feel of the music Zeppelin produced. If given the chance, I wonder if Plant would have changed his style for those early recordings. He definitely seems to prefer the more subdued tone and has done since the mid seventies. caroselambra~

Rock Action
Agreed. Great thread, in fact. Sure, I'm kinda disappointed that Robert chose not to move forward with the rest of the guys. But he's following his heart, which everyone has the right to do. It's the only way to live...

But he's following his heart, which everyone has the right to do. It's the only way to live... Yeah, this is actually so cool. One of the things that really upset me was the interview he did where he said... after all, it's just a game... not if he was standing in my shoes. When I watched him with Alison, I realized how far he has come since then. I'm rather proud of him and really happy for him. I think the rest of the band will make a spectacular comeback. It is important to not even compare them to what was. I really DO wish I could sing for them I haven't had a recording done since I was 3.

eternal light
He would be nobody w/o jimmy's riffs! Robert Plant has value with or without Jimmy Page. It is incorrect to say that all of Robert Plant's talent derives from Jimmy Page's riffs, even though they are great. No, there are too many photos and lyrics that suggest otherwise. He plays to win, but he also plays to have fun and not to take it too seriously. He has always had the attitude that he must be proud of what he does. WTF??? believe me you don't have a fu*king idea about what you're talking about... Robert succeed even without Jimmy's riffs.. he built up his solo career without using his Zeppelin career and people are listening to his music today because of who he is now and not because he was the lead vocalist of Led Zeppelin!! eternal light
The Zeppelin career and the solo career are still components of one man's career. You see different facets of him throughout both.

Obviously this person never heard Robert back in the Band Of Joy days. He was going to catch fire somewhere-if not with Zep, then with someone else. Like the Faces, for instance. I know..it just made me angry when he said plant would have been nothing without Jimmy's riffs... his zeppelin career was a big and important part of his life but I think he could be successful without this part of his life...he still could have been successful due to his music and powerfull voice that gave him the reputation he has today without being "Robert Plant the lead singer of Led Zeppelin"...
