Jack Bruce slates Led Zep!

I was gonna put this down to the (in)famous Newcastle belligerence,

1 - please educate me on this infamous thing - I grew up there, but I've never heard of it.

2- Jack Bruce isn't from Newcastle.

As for his comments - the drugs were, and clearly still are, very good indeed.

I think it was Ginger Baker. I had edited by post from Ginger to Bruce. Thanks for the clarification.

I read years ago in Modern Drummer magazine in an interview with Ginger, about the infighting in the band.He said it was always him and Jack fighting about something, he said he never had much of a problem with Eric. Which was proved on Eric's next band, Blind Faith with Ginger on the drums.

Eric said that in his autobiography, too. (Hi Levee--cute sig!)

I remember a Jack Bruce interview from years ago (wish I still had it) where he said (and I'm paraphrasing) Plant and Bonham were amateurs, Jones was nothing but a session guy, and Page was the only one who was good enough to be in Cream. So I guess his opinion changes based on what he's drinking that night.

Sorry, Knebby! I always thought he was from Newcastle, but I see now (thanks be to Google) that he is of the Scottish persuasion. [sigh] Yet more proof that my memory can no longer be trusted...

I meant no offense with the Newcastle comment - I've always heard that Geordie people are tough and scrappy is all. Sting has often made reference to this through the years.

I have always found it interesting over the years the anymosity towards Page. Ive read several interviews with Clapton, Richards, now Bruce, Townsend, etc and they frankly think Zep is just crap. Everyone has an opinion but there seems to be something more here. I dont think Clapton and Page have ever been close and Ive heard Page talk good things about Clapton but Eric has usually been negative or no comment.

Couldn't see this mentioned elsewhere but sorry if it has been.

BBC 5 Live have just reported on last night's (?) Classic Rock awards. The reporter asked Jack Bruce about Led Zep and was shocked - to say the least - by his response.

Let's just say it was venom (and four-letter word) filled... From memory, he said 'the drummer' (I dare say he can't remember his name) was the only good one in the band and that Jimmy is a 'crap' (I think was the word he chose) session player!!!

Oh, and that he believes Cream were the real innovators and were overshadowed by Zep who (clearly, to Jack's mind) stole their idea (I'm paraphrasing here). Hence his hatred of all things Zep.

Ha ha!! You gotta laugh. No wonder Eric Clapton can't be doing with any more Cream reunions!

I saw Cream at The Albert Hall in 2005 and I'm still delighted I was there - but there's really no comparison with the mighty Zeppelin, I'm afraid. (In my opinion, I should say - and I should also point out I'm 33 so never got to see either band in their heyday).

Listen back on the BBC iPlayer. It was at about 12.45 today.

P.S. Good old Ozzy was far nicer - he said 'good luck to 'em' when asked about Jimmy, JPJ and Jason touring without Percy.

another witch hunt...

Just heard a snippet on Radio, seems to be creating a bit of a buzz. Jack rather sharply said "the only decent member was the drummer....and he's dead"

The tactful Mr. Bruce

Even if this (and the rest of his childish rant) was said in some sort of jest, I'm not getting it I'm afraid. Grow up Jack.

Hey no worries - I prove myself pretty belligerant here all the time!

Jealousy, perhaps?

Infamous is a little village up north near Scotland where Mr Bruce comes from :D

Its a bit harsh by him I have to say.

I can't take away Creams influence on rock music but to call Zep crap and the reunion lame is a tad too harsh.:huh::o

I don't even care. I still think Jack Bruce is great, and Cream are great. Plus, it's amazing Bruce is alive at all, he can say what he wants--deosn't hurt me! :D

Perhaps his new liver is craving for a drink.

All together now

Unfortunately, Jack Bruce has slagged Led Zeppelin several times before. One can only speculate as to the psychology of why he does, but it's certainly no news. In fact, Jack and Ginger Baker, for all their bickering, both seem to despise Led Zeppelin. Eric's point of view is noticeably less negative; he seems to view LZ as heirs to a part of Cream's legacy - which is very one-sided, but at least he's not slagging the boys. B)

Nothing new, all of the Cream guys have badmouthed Zep over the years. Usually it comes from the mouth of Ginger Baker, who rarely has anything nice to say about anyone, including his own bandmates. IMO it's not a big deal, it's easy to understand how high caliber musicians would have strong opinions and I don't chalk it up to sour grapes. Jack Bruce has a reason to be cocky, without a doubt he is one of the best bassists ever, very creative bass work. Besides the Zep guys aren't guilt free with regard to getting mouthy over the years. Just because a person is a high profile musician doesn't mean they should be diplomatic or without opinion.

But comparing Cream to Zep is pointless, Cream was active for less than 2 years and still managed to make a HUGE impact. What they did in the short time they were together was amazing.
