Mitch Mitchell Dies

Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 1:26PM

Mitch Mitchell, drummer and last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead in a Portland, Ore., hotel Nov. 12.

Mitchell was touring with the "Experience Hendrix Tour," which wrapped its West Coast leg Nov. 7.

Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland police spokesman, told the Oregonian that an employee at the upscale Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body. "It was natural causes," Schmautz said, "so we weren't involved beyond that."

Mitchell pioneered a drumming style that would later be known as fusion. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Another great one bites the dust. Curious as to what the autopsy report shows...heart attack? 61, 62 is still pretty young.

I was too young to see Jimi Hendrix, and only just got to see Mitch Mitchell live for the first time the Sunday before the election, Nov. 2, as part of that Hendrix Experience Tribute concert.

Boy am I glad I did. He was an influential drummer, like Keith Moon, in that wild kinetic

style.

What a loss. Mitch was an incredible drummer.

Mitch Mitchell drum solo. Maybe one of the greatest drum solo's I ever heard.

R.I.P

My husband, who is a huge fan of Hendrix and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, emailed me that clip. I agree that it really is one of the greatest drum solos I've heard.

I was too young to have seen Mitch during his days with Hendrix but I saw him several times with his other band, Ramatam, when they were touring with Humble Pie. My husband also remembers seeing Mitch with Edgar Winter.

RIP Mitch and thanks so much for all of the amazing music you gave us.
