Melanie_72
That was really good, thanks for the link! I think Jason would do a great job playing it as well.
chef free
ALS from 6/23/77 is damn near perfect!
The Rover
I don't know how you can always tell when the guitar part that Page is playing is being mirrored by The Cure's Porl Thompson or not...So I don't know about rating "Page's" individual performance here. Certainly Robert was better at this demanding song when Led Zeppelin ruled the earth. Bonham's drumming is of course, untouchable. He is fucking untouchable. At 3:21, when Robert sings "If one bell should ring, in celebration for a king".... In the Zeppelin tours, Robert would point to Jimmy ...but in this film, the camera goes off Robert just before he sings that line. Since it was so rare for P&P to do this song, I guess we'll never know.... Edited December 1, 2008 by The Rover
Rock Action
ALS from 6/23/77 is damn near perfect! That IS an unusually good version, I must agree. It's far better than most live versions.
SuperDave
It's quite a complex piece, especially with all of Jimmy's different guitar parts he layered into the studio version. It was very difficult to duplicate live. As Rock Action siad the one from Knebworth was quite good, even though it was touched up and the version from L.A. on 6/23/77. I also favor the one two nights previously on the 21st as well as the others. Edited December 2, 2008 by SuperDave
reids
One of my favorite Led Zep songs and a very good performance with P & P. Michael Lee did a wonderful job with it, too. Thanks for sharing the link. Now, just need to locate the complete show. R
MisterMcLov1n
My thoughts exactly, ALS is my favourite Led Zep song too. This version is great...The Knebworth version was really good too, but I never felt they quite nailed it live. Maybe this is a rare instance where having another guitarist playing alongside Jimmy is just what's needed? Exactly. There are MANY guitar tracks playing at the same time on ALS' studio version all layered. That's why it never sounded quite right live.
