▲ Hey that's wonderful! I wanna learn it in standard tuning. I love Jimmy's way--of course! But i'm squeamish when it comes to tweaking my classical guitar's tuning too much. Ya know, nylon strings are sensitive.

I learned it in standard tuning when I was 14 (1980). I've since seen correct transcripts in Jimmy's EADADE tuning (like he did it live), but my muscle memory refuses to budge!

BTW, doing it in standard requires some serious freaky fingerwork! His way is far easier! One finger chords that in standard are complex. And I too would squirm tuning my classical's B string up to D!

I'm worse, I'd squirm even before I tune my steel string acoustic, too haha. Hey thanks, Evster, for the warning re: Rain Song in standard. Aaah well, I just "fake" it in standard tuning using the A scale. Fudge fudge fudge, is what I do when it comes to el maestro, Jimmy. LOL

BTW: Loved your post on "In The Light" thread, to our good ol' mutual friend, BonzoLikeDrumer re: run down leading up to Light, light, light. I precede that with the ascending riff you referred to when ya said "we have time ". So, after run-down, (right after fretting the D&G strings, 2nd fret, part), I end up with Dsuspended then D. So, to sum it up, I:

• Do the ascending riff.
  
• Do the descending riff you taught us.
  
• Then I end up with Dsus. and then D as I sing In the light, [etc.]"
  

I use it a lot and really appreciate the hidden bi-directional melodies it conveys.

Landslide

This wonderful song uses "Travis" picking. This way, you can really hear that niicce! bass line! No strumming, here. So, it's a little harder. Just do it a lot without thinking of chords, just to get the feel of it. Takes some getting used to. But worth it! Basically, some rules of Travis pickin' are:

• Right hand plucks, instead of strums.
  
• Thumb plays bass strings (in red) while the trebles are plucked by index, middle and ring. (strings, G,B and E, respectively)
  
• The bass strings are the (see tabs) (top strings, while you're holding the guitar) E, A and D strings.
  
• The trebles are the (see tabs) (bottom strings) G, B & E strings.
  
• In Landslide, the plucking sequence is, thumb, index, middle, thumb, ring, index.
  
• To master the rhythm, there's a longer duration after the initial thumb pluck. In other words, after the thumb plucks, wait a little, and then do the rest of the plucking sequence in relatively quick succession.
  
• Like this, thumb (wait), then quickly, index-middle-thumb-ring-index.

*This chord is tricky. takes time. Just think of it as a backwards Dm. Sorry, this is the best way to describe the real feel of it. This is all about the sense of TOUCH. And it usually comes after the Cm7 chord and around the B♭ barre chord. Just don't worry about it. You may want to substitute the barred F7 (Fig. 1A) for it. But I prefer the F7/A because of the running bass lines of which it is an integral part.

(including my own transcriptions of mozart, chopin, satie) had audtion at the royal northern, then i had a huge family trauama, well actually two, and left me reeling. i had no desire to play the guitar, and basically put my classical away in its case for 3 1/2 years.

have now returned to the instrument , and am very very rusty, am preparing an atcl advanced recital diploma (trinity college), am also relaerning this, perhaps the most beautiful piece ver written for guitar by, imho, composed by the world's greatest guitarist: agustin barrios; here's john williams playing it.

This very evocative song reminds me immediately of my young adult years--early 1970s to late 80s. I hung out on Bleecker a lot with my group of friends. We frequented places like "The Back Fence" (a great bar where the performers would play covers & originals all through the night). We'd also dine at a yummy Spanish restaurant called "El Café Español". (corner of Bleecker & Nowhere, jk, Thompson)

Anyway, the guy in the video is super! He plays Bleecker Street the way I've always wanted to play it. He uses running bass lines and hammers-on, typical Paul Simon signatures. Except he capo's it way too high. I capo it around 4th or 5th fret. Up to you. Use Travis picking.

Here's another version of Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, different from the one I posted on page 4. Mine was EZ transposed version. This one's better, more things going on, musically (melody lines and bass lines).

Right now, I'm working on this beautiful Dylan song, Buckets of Rain. Makes me appreciate not only Dylan's lyrics but his compositions as well. Note his solution to the possibly "boring" D, G, A chord progression. (Genius) It's presented, using "Open D" tuning and I bravely and gently tweaked my acoustic steel strings to this tuning. haha. (but not my nylon-string classical! )

In "Drop D" tuning. This tuning is SOOOO EZ, and harmless that I even tuned my classical guitar to it. haha. You simply tune the 6th string (bass E-string) down a major step to D. If you're lucky to own a chromatic tuner, you're all set. If not, just tune it to the open 4th string as best you can or use the good ol' pitch pipe). All the other strings remain in standard tuning. (good, LOL)

Thanks to wonderful online guitar instructor David Hodge, I now know how to play this most evocative song.

He breaks it down for ease of learning by saying that the famous intro (signature) hook merely consists of variations of the Dmaj7 chord. (This chord's notes are D, F♯, A and C♯.)

And that the melody line of this hook simply ascends from A→B→C♯
