What songs are you working on now?

:yesnod: Hey that's wonderful! I wanna learn it in standard tuning. I love Jimmy's way--of course! But i'm squeamish when it comes to tweaking my classical guitar's tuning too much. Ya know, nylon strings are sensitive. :)

I learned it in standard tuning when I was 14 (1980). I've since seen correct transcripts in Jimmy's EADADE tuning (like he did it live), but my muscle memory refuses to budge!

BTW, doing it in standard requires some serious freaky fingerwork! His way is far easier! One finger chords that in standard are complex. And I too would squirm tuning my classical's B string up to D! :o

 I'm worse, I'd squirm even before I tune my steel string acoustic, too haha. Hey thanks, Evster, for the warning re: Rain Song in standard. Aaah well, I just "fake" it in standard tuning using the A scale. Fudge fudge fudge, is what I do when it comes to el maestro, Jimmy. LOL

BTW: Loved your post on "In The Light" thread, to our good ol' mutual friend, BonzoLikeDrumer re: run down leading up to Light, light, light. I precede that with the ascending riff you referred to when ya said "we have time :)". So, after run-down, (right after fretting the D&G strings, 2nd fret, part), I end up with Dsuspended then D. So, to sum it up, I:

  • Do the ascending riff.
  • Do the descending riff you taught us.
  • Then I end up with Dsus. and then D as I sing In the light, [etc.]"

I use it a lot and really appreciate the hidden bi-directional melodies it conveys.

Landslide

by Stevie Nicks

This wonderful song uses "Travis" picking. This way, you can really hear that niicce! bass line! No strumming, here. So, it's a little harder. Just do it a lot without thinking of chords, just to get the feel of it. Takes some getting used to. But worth it! Basically, some rules of Travis pickin' are:

  • Right hand plucks, instead of strums.
  • Thumb plays bass strings (in red) while the trebles are plucked by index, middle and ring. (strings, G,B and E, respectively)
  • The bass strings are the (see tabs) (top strings, while you're holding the guitar) E, A and D strings.
  • The trebles are the (see tabs) (bottom strings) G, B & E strings.
  • In Landslide, the plucking sequence is, thumb, index, middle, thumb, ring, index.
  • To master the rhythm, there's a longer duration after the initial thumb pluck. In other words, after the thumb plucks, wait a little, and then do the rest of the plucking sequence in relatively quick succession.
  • Like this, thumb (wait), then quickly, index-middle-thumb-ring-index.

NOTES:

♩Left hand finger positions are indicated at left.

♩Right hand fingers are indicated on the right.

*This chord is tricky. takes time. Just think of it as a backwards Dm. Sorry, this is the best way to describe the real feel of it. This is all about the sense of TOUCH. And it usually comes after the Cm7 chord and around the B♭ barre chord. Just don't worry about it. You may want to substitute the barred F7 (Fig. 1A) for it. But I prefer the F7/A because of the running bass lines of which it is an integral part.

BRIDGE

F7/AWell, B♭(barre)I've been a-F7/Afraid of Gmchanging,

'Cause I E♭built my B♭life around Cm7you. F7/A

And B♭(barre)time makes you F7/Abolder and

GmChildren get older.

Well, E♭I'm getting B♭older, Cm7too, B♭so...

GUITAR BREAK

(basically, the dominant progression, like this ⬇)

E♭, B♭, Cm7, B♭,

E♭, B♭, Cm7,

(then do the bridge again and then go on to the next verse till the end)

Later, I'll post the real chords to this "guitar break". They are merely beautiful variations of the main chords...jazz'd up (sound like harmonics in back of you), but later. :D

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

If you can find a fiddler or a woodwind artist to play the melody, that'd be great! Otherwise, just play guitar solo, the main progression, like this:

G, G, G, G, Dm, B♭, G

Then repeat VERSE 2. Then I would end it with another instrumental break, slowing down at the end.

Wow! that's beautiful, Barrios! I loveBream! Classical guitar is difficult for me, I must learn to sight read better. I've always admired classical guitarists. :D

And, nice!, TurnThePage 24! So, there is a group with the word "Yngwie" in their name! :)

Anyways, here's the thing I was going for in my post above, re: Chava Sequence...(thanks, Sam for the new video embedding feature! :) )

i got to a stage where my playing was strong, in 2005, i had approx 27 pieces at grade 8 and above all memorised. (including my own transcriptions of mozart, chopin, satie) had audtion at the royal northern, then i had a huge family trauama, well actually two, and left me reeling. i had no desire to play the guitar, and basically put my classical away in its case for 3 1/2 years.

have now returned to the instrument , and am very very rusty, am preparing an atcl advanced recital diploma (trinity college), am also relaerning this, perhaps the most beautiful piece ver written for guitar by, imho, composed by the world's greatest guitarist: agustin barrios; here's john williams playing it.

in addition learning the prelude and fugue from bwv 997 (js bach)

Hi barrios! I'm sorry about your family trauma :( and I hope all is well with you and yours. :) Glad you picked up your instrument again! You seem driven! :D Hey, I listened to the John Williams performance of "la ultima cancion"--magnificent! I know what you mean by its being just about "perhaps the most beautiful piece". I didn't get to listen to the Bach one yet, unfortunately. I surely will, later. Now ya got me wanting to hear more Augustin Barrios! I've heard of him, but never listened to him, 'til now. ;)

BTW, there's now a way to embed your videos right onto your posts! Hope you don't mind, I will now take the liberty of embedding your great John Williams find onto this thread...

Bleecker Street

Words & Music by Paul Simon (1964)

This very evocative song reminds me immediately of my young adult years--early 1970s to late 80s. I hung out on Bleecker a lot with my group of friends. We frequented places like "The Back Fence" (a great bar where the performers would play covers & originals all through the night). We'd also dine at a yummy Spanish restaurant called "El Café Español". (corner of Bleecker & Nowhere, jk, Thompson) :D

Anyway, the guy in the video is super! He plays Bleecker Street the way I've always wanted to play it. He uses running bass lines and hammers-on, typical Paul Simon signatures. Except he capo's it way too high. I capo it around 4th or 5th fret. Up to you. :) Use Travis picking.

I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)

by Bob Dylan

Capo - 2nd fret

(Just strum, strum, strum with a Calypso-like rhythm :D )

For LEFT HAND, if your fingers can tolerate it, vary the style by sliding up and down between the C/g and G7 chords. That's how Yes guitarist Steve Howe plays it in his wonderful version in his album called PORTRAITS of Bob Dylan. This CD is definitely, a find.

G6 Chord (Same as G ⬆ take the ring finger off that's all. In other words, play treble E string "open".)

VERSE 1

I C/gcan't under-G7stand

She let C/ggo of my G7hand

An' C/gleft me here G7facing the Cwall Csus4, C

I'd C/gsure like to G7know

C/gWhy she did G7go

But C/gI can't get G7close to her at Call Csus4, C

Though we Amkissed through the wild blazing Emnighttime

She Fsaid she would never Gfor-G6get G7

But now C/gmornin's G7clear

It's C/glike I ain't G7here

She C/gacts like we G7never have Cmet.

VERSE 2

It's all new to me

Like some mystery

It could even be like a myth

But it's hard to think on

That she's the same one

That last night I was with

From darkness, dreams are deserted

Am I still dreamin' yet?

I wish she'd unlock

Her voice once and talk

'Stead of acting like we never met

VERSE 3

If she ain't feelin' well

Then why don't she tell

'Stead of turnin' her back to my face

Without any doubt

She seems too far out

For me to return to or chase

Though her skirt it swayed as the guitar played

Her mouth was watery and wet

But now something has changed

For she ain't the same

She just acts like we never have met.

VERSE 4

If I didn't have to guess

I'd gladly confess

To anything I might've tried

If I was with her too long

Or have done something wrong

I wish she'd tell me what it is, I'll run and hide

Though the night ran swirling and whirling

I remember her whispering yet

But evidently she don't

evidently she won't

She just acts like we never have met.

VERSE 5

I'm leaving today

I'll be on my way

Of this can't say very much

But if you want me to

I can be just like you

And pretend that we never have touched

And if any-body asks me:

"Is it easy to forget?"

I'd say, "It's easily done

You just pick anyone

And pretend that you never have met."

(edited to add the G Chord. Sorry about that :P )

Here's another version of Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, different from the one I posted on page 4. Mine was EZ transposed version. This one's better, more things going on, musically (melody lines and bass lines). :)

Right now, I'm working on this beautiful Dylan song, Buckets of Rain. Makes me appreciate not only Dylan's lyrics but his compositions as well. Note his solution to the possibly "boring" D, G, A chord progression. (Genius) It's presented, using "Open D" tuning and I bravely and gently tweaked my acoustic steel strings to this tuning. haha. :P (but not my nylon-string classical! 35.gif )

 Hi, ríocoolness! And welcome! :) Nice screen name!

By the way, do you play the LIVE version as well? Where Jimmy played a pretty little Bach piece (called Bourré) during the interlude? Again, welcome! :D

Bourré by J. S. Bach.

I'm also working on a coda à la the great Steve Howe. The coda is for Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan. I know, sorry, I talk about this song a lot. It's because I love this love song! Anyway, after the last verse, I'd play some chords like so:

A barre Chord

E-_A-_D-_G-_B-_E

*__|__|__|__*__*index ← 5th fr.

|__|__|__*__|__|middle

|__*__*__|__|__|ring, pinky

|__|__|__|__|___|

|__|__|__|__|___|

C♯m barre Chord

E-_A-_D-_G-_B-_E

|__*__|__|__|__*index ← 4th fr.

|__|__|__|__*__|

|__|__*__*__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

G barre Chord

E-_A-_D-_G-_B-_E

*__|__|__|__*__*index ← 3rd fr.

|__|__|__*__|__|middle

|__*__*__|__|__|ring, pinky

|__|__|__|__|___|

|__|__|__|__|___|

Bm barre Chord

E-_A-_D-_G-_B-_E

|__*__|__|__|__*index ← 2nd fr.

|__|__|__|__*__|

|__|__*__*__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

Last Verse

AStay lady C♯mstay G

Stay while the Bmnight is still a-Ahead.

A, C♯m, G, Bm

Then (here's the coda) I'd dramatically strum using cross-rhythms, (like the greats--Page & Howe) these chords:

A, Bm, C♯m, D, A.

For all these chords (except A), I'd fret it higher up the fretboard, like so:

  • Bm, use the Em shape @ 7th fret
  • C♯m, use the Em shape @ 9th fret
  • D, use the 1st position A (not barred) shape @ 5th fret.
  • End it all with A barre chord which is the F position @ 5th fret, pictured.
  • OR, if you prefer, just play the coda chords like the ones pictured.

Hope this is not all mish-mash and confusing. :P

Harvest Moon² ♥ :yesnod:

by Neil Young

In "Drop D" tuning. :o This tuning is SOOOO EZ, and harmless that I even tuned my classical guitar to it. haha. :D You simply tune the 6th string (bass E-string) down a major step to D. If you're lucky to own a chromatic tuner, you're all set. If not, just tune it to the open 4th string as best you can or use the good ol' pitch pipe). All the other strings remain in standard tuning. (good, LOL)

Thanks to wonderful online guitar instructor David Hodge, I now know how to play this most evocative song.

He breaks it down for ease of learning by saying that the famous intro (signature) hook merely consists of variations of the Dmaj7 chord. (This chord's notes are D, F♯, A and C♯.)

And that the melody line of this hook simply ascends from A→B→C♯

¹For A7, just let go of the red note.

²To really fine tune your performance, visit David Hodge's excellent instruction!.

OPTIONAL: For a more interesting and rich ending (again, gleaned from Hodge) à la Neil Young, you may use an:

A7 turnaround: At the last chorus, finger the A7 with middle finger on D string and ring finger on B string. So, play A7. Then do variations of A7 like this in succession:

D-_A-_D-_G-_B-_E

|__|__|__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__*__|

|__|__*__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

|__|__|__|__|__|

Then, back 'round to the first phrase which is the Signature hook Soo beautiful. :)

edited to add: the optional "A7 turnaround". :D
