caroselambra~
i havent heard a great deal by him or cream or his yardbirds stuff, but i have heard him guest on quite a few albums can someone explain why he is considered to be one of the greatest i'm beginning to think a lot of his fame stems from the *clapton is god* graffiti i might be totally wrong and he might be brilliant, i just dont know any thoughts? Jahfin
I think he was one of the greatest at the time of Cream, he was right up there with Hendrix, Page, Beck, etc. That's not to say I'm not a fan of any of his solo stuff, a lot of it is great (and a lot of it is not so great) but it's not what earned him the "Clapton is God" status. The realization is in the discovery. Go back and listen to all his work in The Yardbirds, his stint with John Mayall, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominoes. Therein lies his best material. You have to decide with your own ears if he merits greatness in your mind.
ninelives
No denying his early works were amazing - he helped open up a lot of musical doors. That said, he isn't one of my favorite guitarists though I can't really explain why. Technically he's great but I guess he lacks a passion I felt people like Beck, Page, Hendrix etc. had (IMO). I will say several years ago he did a small club tour (maybe 4 dates) just playing blues songs and the show was stellar. Really fantastic to see him in such a tiny setting just playing to play. danelectro
Clapton like any musician had a time when he was in his prime, nobody is exempt from this. His prime was from 1963 to sometime in the early 70's, roughly ten years. What he accomplished in his prime is why people consider him a great guitarist. He gets a lot of crap for his pop music and some of it is truly horrid but I feel people are too hard on him. One thing to remember is he has a lot of exposure, none of the other British guitar heroes have played on as much stuff where they were the marquee musician. It's that exposure and activity that has brought some of the negativity EC's way. He deserves his rep, even if all he ever accomplished was his playing on "Beano" he should have the rep. Of course he did much more and if you took his best stuff and compared it to the material of other famous guitarists it would stack up well. The Pagemeister
Clapton has done consistently good music all these years, which is pretty amazing. Even his last CD a couple years ago sounded really good and had a lot of soul. It's one thing to be around 40+ years, but to still make great music is no small achievement. Clapton was a huge influence on Edward Van Halen. Look at all the great stuff on his 2 CD Best Of: Disc: 1 1. I Feel Free: Cream 2. Sunshine of Your Love: Cream 3. White Room: Cream 4. Crossroads: Cream 5. Badge: Cream 6. Presence of the Lord: Blind Faith 7. After Midnight 8. Let It Rain 9. Bell Bottom Blues 10. Layla 11. Let It Grow 12. I Shot the Sheriff 13. Knockin' on Heaven's Door 14. Hello Old Friend 15. Cocaine 16. Lay Down Sally 17. Wonderful Tonight 18. Promises 19. I Can't Stand It Disc: 2 1. I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart 2. She's Waiting 3. Forever Man 4. It's in the Way That You Use It 5. Miss You 6. Pretending 7. Bad Love 8. Tears in Heaven 9. Layla Unplugged 10. Running on Faith (Unplugged) 11. Motherless Child 12. Change the World 13. My Father's Eyes 14. Riding With the King 15. Sweet Home Chicago 16. If I Had Possession Over Judgment 17. ally
His day's with Cream were quite amazing but after that stint, I have to say that I lost interest in him as a guitar player. Can't deny his contributions to the craft though

The hype is deserved...... I mostly appreciate Eric's playing, he's consumate musician. I really like his singing, on some of his songs. I just happen to prefer Jimmy's style over Eric's..... Nothing bad to say about it..... I just prefer (the Led Zeppelin) Jimmy.

Anyway, you can read more here.... http://forums.ledzeppelin.com/index.php?sh...72&hl=derek Oh, Clapton's first solo LP was recently remastered and released with bonus tracks on CD. The original version of "Let It Rain" was titled "She Rides" and is included.
