euro
That may be so in the US, but in Australia, Led Zep are nothing compared to Queen. One in every 20 people in Australia own a copy of Queen's greatest hits. It is true that Queen have the British votes too, last year there was a poll and Queen topped it, even beating the Beatles (and our beloved Led Zep). I know I'm on a Led Zeppelin forum but I'm not prepared to say that either are better than the other. It's a draw for me too. In UK Queen are basically the 2nd biggest selling act of all time behind the Beatles and Zeppelin are not even in the top 10 so you are correect, As for Australia the gap is much closer than you suggest if you look at ARIA certification level: Queen Gretesth HIts I 14 X Platinum Queen Greatest Hits II 2 8 X Platunum These are recent certiciations Zeppelin: Remasters 10X Zeppelin IV 8X(should be 9 cos certification is old_ 22X comparte to 18X,a difference of 280,000 albums. The catch here is Zeppelin sales in Australia are spread out over more albums while Queen sales like the rest of the world are confined more to greatest hits packages. A Night at the Opera while great album was not nearly as successful as their greatest hits packages. Even in the UK, the album was not as successful as you would think given the stature of the band in the country. While people undestimate the international popularity of Queen(outsie of North America),there is no doubt that Zeppelin have been more influential in terms of their affect on music in general
Saved
The first band I ever graced with the designation of my favorite band was Queen (I was about 10). Then I heard Led Zeppelin. I have never looked back. These days I enjoy Queen for lighthearted entertainment, not serious musical appeal. Listening to Queen is like watching a cheesy movie like Evil Dead. It is wonderfully entertaining, but when compared to seriously powerful cinema, it is almost laughable. Comparing Queen to Led Zeppelin is like comparing Evil Dead to The Godfather. michaelk
Queen had nothing to offer for me after the early 80's and by the end were a huge embarassment to their own rock legacy (I blame it on the eighties and mullets m'self) Back when I liked them, I hadn't really heard any Zep. There were a lot of trendy hairies who, when you tried to ask them at school about Zep, would try to make out that you had to be so intellectual even to understand their album covers. I said 'Alright then sorry for asking' So I really didn't hear any Zep while they were together. I picked up in the nineties when sampling Bonzo's bass-drum brought me to the riffage. Queen vs Zep? Queen ended up a pop band and that's cool in some ways as THEIR heroes were The Beatles. Zep, meanwhile, actually took the 'rock' element in The Beatles (from The White Album on), DEFINED WHAT IT WAS and developed it to PERFECTION. Queen rock, The Beatles rock but Zep IS rock. They took it all the way, people.
alwizard03
Well if you have ever read any post by Me You would know Led Zep is and always will be #1 .I also have seen both Bands numerous times and Led Zeppelin is still my #1 choice .Queen would beat them in only one catergory and that is the stage show.In terms of Music Zep kicks thier butt. However they are all great Musicans if there had been no Zep well then Queen might have been my #1.But since thier is They are at least # 2 and there are a few other bands right thier with them. The sounds Brian May get's from a Guitar amaze me.I also have all thier albums but like most queen fan's the early stuff is my favorite.Jazz was the last Queen lp that i really loved.Saw them several times on that tour including a show at the Forum in LA CAL
Spacewoman
If it's a question of fanbasing; Queen have the majority of British votes ,and Led Zeppelin have the majority of American votes. And now Led Zeppelin has also one more Czech vote- from me!!! I was always listening to LZ, but in the last time- about one month, I´m really bewitched, because of my brother, who showed me their music in more detail. How could I miss them all my life? So I´m now enjoying their music and every day I can find something new in their wonderfull tunes. I like all aspects of it- I like the blues tunes from their earlier albums, and the acoustic gems like "That´s the way" and "Bron-Yr-Aur" as well. The later psychedelic sound is unique for them, I must say, that I recognized them nearly always, when I heard them play on the radio back then. Some of the songs are not simple to remember each note, but this is interesting- you can listen to it thousand times and you discover something new. And thatś why the music from LZ can never be boring. And when somebody tells, that they are plagiators, this is the greatest nonsens ever! Which another band has such singer with this powerfull voice and a guiatarist who plays guiatr like a violin? And a talented bass and piano player like JPJ and a drummer with such bombastic energy? Their sound is unique, because you cannot mistake LZ for an other group. Their sound is typical and that´s why I like it!
slave to zep
youve got to be kidding me! led zep have no equals. i own one queen album, a night at the opera, its great. but nothing else even rates. i mean when i heard crazy little thing called love, i thought thats it , no more queen for me, what a crap song! every single damn track of of every damn zep album is amazing. NO other band makes records like that. yes greatest hits albums maybe for queen, but our boys do it on EVERY record. freddy was a good singer and frontman, cos he was a show off. robert has a presence about him that commands your attention. i dont see millions of people going into a lottery to see the 3 queen boys reunite, do you??? queen were an ok band, but i wouldnt rate them even 2nd to zep. what about free, bad co, and pink floyd. deep purple etc? as for a singer, well i think paul rogers is great. i mean if hes good enough for jimmy...nuff said! MHD
I love early Queen. They were magical live in those days too (I know some folk will say they were fantastic live. period. but it will always be the early stuff for me)...Live Killers is one of my favourite live albums. The alternate live version of We Will Rock You is phenomenal, what a way to open a gig!! But, for me, it all started going pear shaped from The Game onwards...they started having this "housewives choice" sound and appeal about them. I remember hearing Hot Space and wondering where it all went wrong. So, I always say I love '70s Queen among my preferred music choices. After all that, I would never compare them to Zep...just not possible.

scnappie
I think the reason Queen always obtains large amounts of votes in polls such as these is that their music style was so diverse throughout their career (arena rock, funk, glam, hard rock, heavy metal, pop, progressive, psychedelic and gospel). " what " planet are you from ;how can you compare led zep to queen? Anyone with half a brain knows that bohemian rhapsody was queen"s way of trying to better zeppelins stairway ,at the time it came out b/rap was seen as a school kids play song as the real rock kids listen to real rock songs !what a joke ;if you want to hear a joke about bo/rap go along to the nearest karaoke and see some real people do that song some justice then think about the affects of that song or any queen song have (do you have to be intoxicated to listen to it? let alone sing to it) Come on get sober" Queen would never come close to led zep.cheers
Plainbrownwrapper
Just the other night we watched TSRTS in BR and then watched Queen Live in Montreal. By Comparison Queen looked slow and like an opening act for a group with the Talent of Zeppelin. There is no comparison for Zep. They simply set the standard that all will be compared to now and in the future.

Knebby
Queen and Zeppelin are in completely different leagues. Zeppelin was primitive heavy metal/hard rock. Queen was a rock band, but they didnt have a heavy quality. Brian May is a great guitarist but his skill cant even match the magnitude of Jimmy Page. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????????????????? Robert's Plant
In the 70's where Led Zep rules, Queen was a second or so fiddle. In the 80's, when you can never comprehend what had happened to Robert Plant and his hair, Queen was it. In Live Aid, Freddie Mercury, as my favorite person has it put, practically had the world at the palm of his hand at Wembley. Whereas Led Zep almost didn't finish their air time in at the JFK Stadium. Then all of a sudden Freddie died, and so Queen became even more popular with Freddie martyrized by AIDS. It depends largely on which time and space you are in. Now O2's put Zep back on top. Two years ago, a poll (in the US? Forgot.) had put Led Zep as the greatest rock band ever, with Queen trailing in second and The Beatles third. This was the same poll that catapulted STH as the best rock song ever. Then a lot of polls followed that now even put boyband Bon Jovi in contention, so puhhlease these polls don't mean nothing now. My observation, Freddie is much better singer on record than live. Robert Plant, on the other hand, sounds much even better live than on a recorded song. Two different qualities to their vocal prowess, but each one good on their own. Freddie's more of an operatic dramatic rock (we found out why in 1990), Robert's has a raw quality to it that you can always single from copycats (not Freddie): playful to wailing. I would describe it furthermore as catchy with no need for complexity. Robert Plant - greatest rock vocals and frontman ever, never mind sexiest man alive John Bonham - greatest drummer that ever lived Now Zep or Queen.... OK: Groupwise I go for my Zep. Lyrics/Songwise I concede to a close tie.
McSeven
To me Zep wins. I like Queen, but I have not heard enough to make them better over Zep. If you like opera then Queen is for you. If you like action packed story. Then Zep is for you. To me Zep is like StarWars. Magical. Also, Queen to me lacks Sex appeal. I just can't see girls going crazy over them, or guys admiring them as much. I hear a lot more Zep on the radio than Queen. Mc7

Gervox
I find myself in such agreement with the majority of the posts here, That I am actually frightened! Queen,to me were the greatest British singles act of the '70's and beyond. They were always arty without being too pretentious. I always had (and have) a soft spot for Dr. Brian May,and was astounded to find- only a few years ago, that we both shared an absolute obsession with a certain sci-fi movie!. However, I never really enjoyed their albums as a whole, untill The Works in 1984. From that time onwards, untlll the obvious and sad end, almost every song on one of their albums could have been a hit single!. The major difference between the music of Queen and Zeppelin is that instead of being a band that loved and could play certain styles of music,Led Zeppellin seemed to be coming from "inside" the music. The almost cinematic scope of it has captured the hearts and imaginations of many people from very different walks of life. I have seen this myself on many occasions;from unemployed people, grave diggers, house wives, doctors, lawyers, judges- I could go on. This is because of the wealth of knowledge that John Paul and Jimmy brought to the project, and injected into the DNA of the music, and Jimmys skill (or incredible luck) in finding and realising the worth of Robert and John Bonham. It simply made them "Classic Rock" years before that term was invented. If you listen to a lot of the songs that Freddy wrote, many of them are just songs about him or at least in the first person.(Freddy used the word "I" alot). Led Zeppelin tapped into something far deeper, sometimes darker, and took us on an historical tour of our world; From the 1930's Mississippi Delta to a tenth century Scandinavian ice world among many possible examples, and made them all seem exciting. Our imaginations travelled with them. They led (no pun intended!) us on the more satisifing journey, both lyically and musically, because they could! kakdaddy
Queen were definately overlooked in the US throughout their career, not so much because of their music but because of their name, their "Englishness", Freddies mustache, & well... Freddie. To the average 70's guy who loved Ted Nugent, Queen did not represent him in a way that Bob Seger or the Eagles could. "Camp" did not translate well over here unless you were gay or liked John Waters movies. Queens' music I have never mistaken for anyone elses'. They uniquely sound like Queen, not like anyother rock band of their time because their imitaters couldn't approach their sound, it wasn't genericly blues based. At times when I was younger I have confused the Beatles, Stones, & Zep for other bands songs, that was never the case with Queen. The only band that would come close & its' a stretch was ELO, & once again thats' a stretch. The one thing that Queen had that added to their sound that set them apart from hard rock bands like Zeppelin was that they had that Rodgers & Hammerstein vibe & English dancehall background, that would explain alot more of their popularity outside the US than Zeppelin. In the end though it does come down to music & believe Zeppelin does blow Queen out of the water. Like the Beatles, Zeppelin had roughly a decade of consistently great recorded output with few missteps. Like the Stones, Queen had a longer recording career with great work but was too inconsistent & spotty, with their great work glossing over the less than inspired stuff. The Beatles win the Stones battle, Zeppelin wins the Queen battle. As Robert Plant once said: "I'm not saying we're number one, but we're so much better than whomever is number two". Here's looking at you Queen.

chef free
Queen was a great band for the first five albums, then they sold out. I couldn't even listen to News of the World. Freddy has a better voice than Robert but I don't actually want to hear what he has to sing (Plant writes better lyrics). Bonham is a much better drummer but Queen's bass player is totally underated. In the end Pagie is just so much more intresting to listen to than Brian May, he's just another Hendrix clone!
