His voice really livens up songs like "Hicktown" and "She's Country" that would otherwise be your standard Big & Rich type of fare that I would probably ignore. He makes them sound not quite so gimmicky and . Then there's the song "Johnny Cash," which sounds so much better than Tracy Byrd's version. He gives it a on-the-edge, desperate, vulnerable side that Byrd could never have gotten out of the song. Love it. For mainstream country, it's pretty damn good. Just thought I'd share that, even though probably nobody wants to hear about it (it's 2 am, what can I say?). I always feel a little weird talking about country on a rock forum, considering it's one of those things like rap - you either love it or you hate it - so I'm glad I could actually be helpful. Oh yeah, and I'd just like to add that Ronnie Van Zant is the voice of my soul. His voice has the same effect on me as Hendrix playing the guitar. It is refreshing to see young musicians who value the work of their seniors.... I have had the pleasure of seeing Eddie live a few times and he never disapoints. Real talent + zero cliched rock star mentality = rare integrity indeed. No need to explain further - just listen. What a shame the greatest male voice around will not be heard after the summer, apart from perhaps an occasional guest appearance, while the airwaves will be filled with more famous yet far, far weaker talents. For me it's Dylan, esp his late 80s and early 90s period. His 60s and 70s goes without saying that some of it is total brilliance. In that same vein, Mark Knopfler has an amazing voice, and an ability to create such atmospheric music around it (check out "Mark Knopfler Seattle" on YouTube for his latest).
