Songs about God, The Lord, Jesus and Religion

Recommended Posts

I'm not a very religious person, but I just loves songs with religious overtones. Some of my favorites, Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Rev. Gary Davis(gospel) all have multiple songs with dealing with religious topics.

Here is one by Harry, not really religious, but I guess the lord must be in New York City...enjoy and may God bless you.....

Harry Nilsson - "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City"

Of course George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord", U2 "If God Will Send His Angels", Sex Pistols "God Save the Queen" Poison's "Something To Believe In", Doobie Brother's "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me", ZZTop "Jesus Just Left Chicago"

,

but just as influential: John Lennon's "God", Tori Amos "God", and Nine Inch Nails "Heresy" :) You tube it if you haven't heard the song. :) it's awesome...

and can't leave out The Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil", lol

Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam. Sung by Kurt Cobaina and Nirvana but written by the Vaselines.

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam. 'Cause sunbeams are not made like me.

Don't expect me to cry for all the reasons you had to die. Don't ever ask your

love of me.

Don't expect me to cry.

Don't expect me to lie.

Don't expect me to die for thee.

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam. 'Cause sunbeams are not made like me.

Don't expect me to cry for all the reasons you had to die. Don't ever ask your

love of me.

Don't expect me to cry.

Don't expect me to lie.

Don't expect me to die.

Don't expect me to cry.

Don't expect me to lie.

Don't expect me to die for thee.

U2's "Yahweh" is my favorite and holds a very special place in my heart because I wrote a poem 25 years ago with almost identical lyrics. I fell off the chair the first time I heard it! And I have continued to use it oftentimes to begin a prayer/meditation session.

Rogue Frequency's SIEGE OF FAITH about the crusades (or religious wars) is lyrically and musically among the best things iv heard in the last few years:

Six years still sieging strongholds

Do weary men do as they're told

Carrying banners of faith

With thirsty blades stained with disgrace

Rain of bolts pour from the sky

Heaven sent to purify

Tunic soaked with their pain

I am filled with earthly shame

CHORUS

You must reclaim holy land

Lots of gold in Saladin's hands

(I don't believe that Christ needs wealth)

Take the heathen by the sword

I am the church's overlord

(Thou shalt not taste the blood of man)

My mind is plagued with doubt

As i hear my brothers shout

Losses extremely high

I can hear the saints sigh

CHORUS

Heavens cry down at man

What have they done

Blood drenches my hands

CHORUS

GUITAR SOLO

Rogue Frequency - SIEGE OF FAITH

Black Sabbath - "After Forever"

Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?

Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave

Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?

Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or

do you keep your cool?

Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope

do you think he's a fool?

Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways

And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say

If they knew you believe in God above?

They should realize before they criticize

that God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall

In with the pack wherever they run

Will you still sneer when death is near

And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ

I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced

Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?

You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone

Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one

The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate

Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

The Harrison song is "The Lord Loves The One That Loves The Lord". The comma's and the quotes made the original post confusing. Anyway, it's a great song on the Living in the Material World LP. The LP followed the watershed All Things Must Pass LP and contained quite a few spiritual songs on it. It was not very well received, everybody probably wanted another version of All Things Must Pass.

One of my all-time favorites. I'm not very religious myself, but I really do love that song and what it represents.

Have always loved this song. One of sabbath's many finer moments.

The Who - the incredibly great "Faith in Something Bigger" from Odds and Sods. Probably a bunch more Who/Townsend songs dealing with the topic.

I know exactly what you mean.I've got to admit that I think that basically, when your dead your dead, but maybe some gospel music just hits a chord with some sort of inner spirituality that human's possess?

Here's one from Rev. Gary Davis - simple lyrics with fancy picking:

Mother, don't you stop a-prayin'

Father, keep right on prayin'

Mother, don't you stop a-prayin'

For this ol' world is almost done

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

For this ol' world is almost done

Sister, don't you stop a-prayin'

Brother, keep right on prayin'

Sister, don't you stop a-prayin'

For this ol' world is almost done

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'

For this ol' world is almost done
