'gotta serve somebody' - bob dylan

toronto 1980

You may be an ambassador to England or France,

You may like to gamble, you might like to dance,

You may be the heavyweight champion of the world,

You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage,

You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage,

You may be a business man or some high degree thief,

They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk,

You may be the head of some big TV network,

You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame,

You may be living in another country under another name

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a construction worker working on a home,

You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome,

You might own guns and you might even own tanks,

You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride,

You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side,

You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair,

You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk,

Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk,

You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread,

You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody,

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy,

You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy,

You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray,

You may call me anything but no matter what you say

You're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You're gonna have to serve somebody.

Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Johnny Cash is always a great place to start. Even when his songs aren't about religion he sings with the authority of God. "When The Man Comes Around" is a nasty, little piece of apocalypse.

"Religion 1 & 2" by PiL is the other side of the coin. Brutal song.

My favorite song with religious overtones has to be Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris' cover of the Louvin Brothers "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night". Beautiful song. Wouldn't be surprised to hear Plant & Krauss do it at some point, it would be perfect for them.

I experienced a musical rebirth this week. You see, I own this EP by 10,000 Maniacs containing a song called "Let the Mystery Be". I've always loved the song, but never really researched it or anything. Recently on XM radio I heard the original version by Iris Dement. Oh my, she is awesome. You can also hear her sing this on youtube.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Some say once you're gone you're gone forever, and some say you're gonna come back.

Some say you rest in the arms of the Saviour if in sinful ways you lack.

Some say that they're comin' back in a garden, bunch of carrots and little sweet peas.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Instrumental break.

Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory and I ain't saying it ain't a fact.

But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory and I don't like the sound of that.

Well, I believe in love and I live my life accordingly.

But I choose to let the mystery be.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

I love Iris Dement, she has a great turn in the movie Songcatcher. She also gets a ringing endorsement from John Prine in the liner notes to her first record, praise doesn't come much higher than that. Admittedly her voice can be an acquired for some but it's never been a problem for me. Also, if you're a fan of Natalie Merchant, her House Carpenter's Daughter album is absolutely wonderful, especially if you're a fan of songs in the style of Let the Mystery Be.
