  1. Funny what the author of the article Strider posted observed last year ...

How do I love Clint Eastwood? Let me count the ways...

One of the ways is the fact that you can't pigeonhole him...either artistically or politically.

One of the last true GIANTS left in Hollywood. I always see his movies, no matter what. Even though I was disappointed with "Hereafter", I still look forward to see the new one, "J. Edgar" with relish. I've been hearing great things about it for some time. When I do(Antonioni, AFI Film Fest, concerts, book events have been keeping me busy), I'll let you know what I think.

In the meantime, here's a nice little piece that appeared in this past weekend's LA Times:

Clint Eastwood talks politics: Who's the Democrat he voted for?

By Patrick Goldstein November 7, 2011

Clint Eastwood is such a passionate fiscal conservative that when he married his second wife, Dina Ruiz, in 1996, he included her finances in his own personal deficit-reduction campaign. “My wedding present to her was paying off her credit cards,” he told me the other day, using his bungalow on the Warner Bros. lot as a staging area for interviews touting “J. Edgar,” his new film about longtime FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover. When I asked if he’d made any similar offers as, well, an anniversary gift, Eastwood said with a laugh, “No, I told her it was a one-time deal.”

    [...]

When it comes to the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, if Eastwood is enthusiastic about anyone, it’s Herman Cain. “I love Cain’s story,” he says. “He’s a guy who came from nowhere and did well, obviously against heavy odds. He’s a doer and a straight-talker, which I don’t see enough of from either party.”

He’s not as bullish on Mitt Romney. As a film icon, Eastwood has been fiercely protective of his image, but he’s not especially enamored by that attitude in a politician. When Eastwood was in Massachusetts in 2002, filming “Mystic River,” Romney was running for governor there. “I saw a lot of him and you have to admit — he looks like a president,” Eastwood recalled with a tone that you’d have to describe as being slyly sarcastic. “I mean, if you were casting a movie where you needed someone to play president, you’d definitely pick him.”

He sounded equally skeptical about Rick Perry. When I suggested that Perry, as a rugged, gun-toting Texan, would probably crave a photo op with Eastwood even more than with Donald Trump, Eastwood said with a shrug, “If he wanted to meet me, he might be a little disappointed.”

  2. Set in suburban Toronto, the film tracks a young man struggling between traditional Indo-Canadian family expectations and his dreams of hockey stardom

"Chup kar ke roti cala" ... hahaha. Funny little film. I liked it.

    OCCUPY EVENT

I do not understand this event. Since so much banking is done online now especially by the younger generation.. what is the point of camping outside a bricks and mortor bank?

Juliet, I doubt the Canadian protestors themselves comprehend what they are protesting. Our banking system has always beenmuch more regulated than the what was is/was in the US. Lending practices would make the sub-prime type debacles much less likely to happen here. If a point was made it is improving tax systems in both countries. Recently having to deal with the IRS and all 50 of the American states has proved what a bureacratic mess it is. But I digress ..

In Toronto there is only a handful of protestors. They're camped in a cushy park near a big church with the public amenities (a few block from my office). I do hope they enjoy the oncoming Canadian winter. #FAIL

  3. You don't want to see a police state in action? I, for one, am excited. I work in the "outer security zone" so it'll be interesting to see if I can see any anarchists in action. Although, I'm still hoping they'll give me the day off.

    Moi aussi.

    p.s. Hi Juliet!

  4. Tell all of your henchmen at the fucking borders to loosen up with their bullshit tactics of keeping us

americans out of the country. They are being outrageous with going back 20 yrs to see if you stole a fucking candy bar when you were 12 and using it as an excuse to keep us out. Post 9/11 jitters I realize but way too exteme. But its ok for you canadiens to buy up all the property in Florida you can get your hands on isnt it?

I am with you. I don't like the Montreal Canadiens either. Them and their Guy Lafleur and Larry Robinson. You can have them.

  5. Wheels of Confusion

Long ago I wandered through my mind

With a land of fairytales and stories

Lost in happiness I knew no fears

Innocence and love was all I knew

    Was it illusion?

Soon the days are passing into ages

Happiness just isn't got so easy

Life was born of fairy tales and daydreams

    Innocence was just another word

    Was it illusion?

Lost in the wheels of confusion

    Running through furnace of tears

    Eyes full of angered illusion

    Hiding in everyday fears

So I vow that life is just a burden

But you know there's never been a winner

Try your hardest and you'll still be a loser

The world will still be turning when you're gone

    Yeah when you're gone!

  6. Don't forget acknowledgements to Mr. Pompous Potato-Head who brought us the GST in the first place. Some interesting questions that Diane Francis posed a few weeks back...

    mulroney_harper.jpg

    Did Mulroney remember the GST?

Diane Francis, Financial Post Published: Thursday, December 13, 2007

Did Brian Mulroney remit 7% GST on the $300,000 fees in cash he got a few years ago from arms dealer Karlheinz Schreiber?

And how about the 7.95% in Quebec sales taxes?

Mulroney has admitted taking three $100,000 cash payments and Schreiber said it was fees. GST on $300,000 would have totalled $21,000 (at 7%) and if the Quebec sales tax applied, the total due was $44,850.

Or did Mulroney, who admitted to being late in declaring the money as income, fail to pay his beloved GST or Quebec's portion?

Mulroney brought in the GST in January, 1991. The GST rules are that taxes are charged the customer (in this case, Schreiber) and are collected and remitted by the seller (Mulroney). And any kind of fees-- consulting, lobbying, public relations or legal--are taxable.

The Quebec sales tax may not apply, so Parliamentarians should ask Mulroney when he testifies today where he was resident when he took the payment. This is important be-cause Quebec also collects 7.95% sales taxes on fees but Ontario does not.

Under Section 191.10 of the Quebec Sales Tax Act, the 7.5% QST is charged on top of the fees, plus 7% GST, for a total of 13.95%. When the GST was 7%, the total was 14.95%.

But the residency of the buyer of the services has to be Quebec, too, or the QST does not apply, only the GST.

So where did Schreiber reside at the time of the payments? If he lived outside Quebec, only the 7% GST, or $21,000, would have had to be remitted by Mulroney.

Or did Schreiber only act as an intermediary for some entity offshore? If so, he had to declare the $300,000 as sales commission income, then deduct what he paid Mulroney. Did he declare this income?

GST must be remitted every 30 days or serious interest and penalties apply. Did he incur these or did he dispatch with the sales taxes in a timely fashion while forgetting income taxes?

Here are the rules taken from the government's Web site: "Persons and organizations engaged in commercial activities in Canada, who have over four consecutive calendar quarters worldwide taxable sales of more than $30,000, must register for and collect the Goods and Services Tax/ Harmonized Sales Tax."

If he did properly register, he would have had to give Schreiber his GST, and possibly QST, numbers so Schreiber could write off the tax portion of the $300,000 he paid Mulroney.

Then there's Schreiber: Did he declare the $300,000 in Canada to tax officials in any form, as a business expense or income? And did he declare, as income, the $200,000 in a European bank account that he said he had earmarked for Mulroney but kept because the former prime minister did not perform the agreed services? Worldwide income must be declared by Canadian residents.

    Just asking.

  7. Yeah, hockey must not be too much of a religion in Winnipeg,eh?

Hockey in Carolina? Who'd a thunk it?

I grew up in New England and I was a huge Bruins fan.I was even in the Bobby Orr fan club when I was a kid :D

Kyna and I are going to try to get to the Carolina/Edmonton game in Jan.WooHoo!!!

Aw, the good ole rough-tough Bruins ...

Remember others like O'Reilly, Park, Bourque, Orr, Cheevers, McNabb (I still have my tattered hockey cards kicking around somewhere), etc.

    Hockey art ...

    cheev.jpg

Great interaction with the fans ...

Now that's the type of hockey I loved!

Funny bit about your Carolina Hurricanes. Seems they've been following you around the country (or, v.v.). Just a decade ago they were the Hartford/New England Whalers. I know you knew that already.

As an old time Islanders fan, I continue to despise the Oiler with passion. What joy it was to see them beat Edmonton in the finals last year. I will be again cheering for your 'Canes. My apologies to your missus.

Just a gentle reminder...THIS IS HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA...

As if we need a reminder, eh?

    Juliet

PS Don't mind me...I'm in a silly mood today!!!!

    Thanks, Juliet.

Don't hurt the guy's feelings, Rorer. Winnipeg doesn't have a team.

I am with you Winnipegers. Toronto is lame. And i live in the damn city. :D

I've seriously doubted that for a while. ;)

  9. Really, my American husband....???

You moved me to a place where the first thing that people do when they buy their houses is take off the wheels....

1981-82 Second-place finishers in the NHL Norris Division!

Woo-hoo! Actually made it past the first round of the playoff!

... But, unfortunately that is as far they got before going defunct in 1996.

    :(

... Quite sad knowing that Winnipeg is the biggest large city in Canada

that can't even come support to have an NHL team.

... A 'Peggers frustration leading to Toronto envy is then quite understandable.

    :P

    ... stones and glass houses.

    p.s. ...

  11. :hysterical:

He must really like his teacher! Or be really scared of her.

    :hysterical:

Could you imagine...file a restraining order on your own child?

Are not all teachers mean and cruel??? ;)

He seems scared ... but I think we're being bad parents. He would not go to bed the other day, so I told him that his teacher was going to come by our house an take him home with her. He pondered and asked "if the teacher has a separate bed for him or if he'd have to share one with the teacher?"

    :mellow::huh::o:lol:

I could not answer that one. Gotta love him; he's the biggest clown.

  12. Not necessarily a "happy" thing but sure made me laugh.

The following exchange just before my toddler son's bedtime...

My toddler: Dad can you plug in the Christmas tree lights again.

Me: Sorry, it's late. We have to turn them off.

My toddler: But I was good this year.

    Me: No.

My toddler: GRRR! I AM GONNA KILL YOU!

    Me: :o:blink::huh:

    :D

  13. I live in toronto. It's boring here. It's very overrated. People always say how clean and safe it is here but it has become a pretty dirty city, the murder rate this year is as high as it's ever been as well.

    :o Pretty dirty?! :o

I'm surprised at your prudish sentiments, Spats.

You know we keep it clean.
