  1. Some more info....

The money shot, signing the contract:

    1968_ny_2.jpg

Apparently, Peter Grant & Mickie Most were in NY to also take care of some business with their other acts (JBG, Donovan, Terry Reid). There's a reference to a party/gathering at the Waldorf on Oct. 21st, with Grant and Mickie Most (no mention of JP yet). Beck's tour schedule indicates returning to NY, from Toronto on October 28th, remaining there until the 31st, off to Detroit for three shows.

I don't think the exact date of the contract signing is known yet, but that's where these photos seem to originate (late October/early Nov). It's interesting that Beck seems to have been there for it.

    :coffee:

How cool is that! Awesome find Sam :)

  2. Amazing photo, and I concur with your date/info about it.

Cheers Sam. I think for Peter Grant to be dressed up in a suit, it must have been something kind of important to make the best impression. Maybe Beck's presence held more sway, regarding his current success with the JBG at the time????

  3. post-1879-0-04885900-1328401524.jpgSteve,

Would you have any info on this photo? Thanks

After a bit of research I think I've nailed it down to October 31 1968.

In late October 1968, Peter Grant travels to New York, armed with tapes of the group's album. Meeting with Atlantic Records's Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler. A deal was quickly reached, with a reported $200,000 advance - a monumental sum at the time.

Jeff Beck played a benefit gig for the children in Biafra at the Fillmore East on the 31 October 1968. I believe PG was managing the JBG at the time? Regardless, Jimmy and Jeff were old mates who probably wanted to catch up (I wonder if it was this occasion that Beck first heard LZ1 and their version of 'You Shook Me'??)

And the 'mystery man' in the middle I believe is Steve Weiss, Led Zeppelin's US attorney.

Also if you look at the official timeline, there is a gap inbetween gigs from October 25 to November 9, 1968, hence Jimmy's presence.

  4. I have that magazine archived in the states and could provide a scan, however it will probably be several months before I can physically access it.

That would be great if you could Steve :) It would solve/or open up a can of worms about that photo...

  5. Going To See The King

On May 11, 1974, Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Bonham) attended Elvis Presley's evening concert at the Los Angeles Forum. During the concert, Elvis stopped a song and jokingly said: 'Wait a minute... If we can start together fellas, because we've got Led Zeppelin out there... let's try to look like we know what we're doing, whether we do or not'.

  6. John Paul Jones Acoustic 360 Bass Amp

Imagine a bass amp so special that people just want to touch it, inhale the dust, and have their picture taken next to it. Any Acoustic 360 from the 1960's is a rare find, but this one's iconic. John Paul Jones used this amp and cabinet on stage with Led Zeppelin as early as the Bath Festival on June 28, 1969, continuing until 1976. You can see the stack in the Led Zeppelin 1976 concert movie "The Song Remains The Same," chronicling the band's 1973 Houses of the Holy tour.

Acoustic Amplification snagged this beauty at a recent (July 2008) Christie's auction. We were fortunate to be there to capture the uncrating on video.

    Wonderful, thanks Steve :)

  7. Led Zeppelin Manager Peter Grant Aboard the Brighton Belle April 30, 1972

Courtesy of my friend Horselunges comes this fantastic new find:

1972 newsreel depicting the final run of the Brighton Belle all-Pullman electric service which commenced services from London to Brighton (using the same stock depicted here - SR Class 5BEL/BR Class 403) in 1933. The passenger shown at 1:26 is none other than Led Zeppelin Manager Peter Grant!

    OUTSTANDING! :notworthy:

    WOW nice find...

  8. AC/DC Show Business Is Big Business

    by Paul Cashmere - May 26 2009

2.3% of Australia`s population bought an AC/DC ticket yesterday. There are 21 million people in Australia and half a million will see Acca Dacca next year.

Credit crunch? Not in AC/DC land. With more than 500,000 tickets sold in Australia yesterday that created a cash flow of more than $60 million.

Ticketing agency Ticketek reported that the sales made history. In the 30 years that the company has been around, that was the most ticket sales in one day for one act ever.

In Sydney, you could not get a ticket for the first show after 12 minutes.

At the peak of demand and capacity, 3,400 tickets were being sold per minute.

    AC/DC dates are:

Feb 11, 13 and 15, Melbourne, Etihad Stadium

Feb 18, 20 and 22, Sydney, ANZ Stadium

Feb 25 and 27, Brisbane, QSAC

    March 2, Adelaide, Adelaide Oval

March 6 and 8, Perth, Subiaco

  9. One of the best gigs I ever saw was at The Bondi Lifesaver when Angus and Bon joined Rose Tattoo (who would arguably be closer to punk than AC/DC) on stage and belted out old Rock "N' Roll classics by the aforementioned Chuck Berry (whom I was fortunate enough to be on stage with, but that's another story), and others.

    Cheers.

I'm all ears to hear that story mate ;)
