  1. Is there anybody else out there willing to admit that this was not the greatest night for Jimmy page?

    I have not read nor heard that the night at the O2 was planned and set out for Jimmy Page to have his greatest night.

    For me it is a slippery slope to single out one band member and scrutinize his contribution after the fact. While Page's tone or approach on this particular night may not strike someone's preferences, it is beyond scrutiny that Page hit the mark for which he was striving for the band.

    Insofar as his contribution as the guitarist, he clearly played with intention- leads and fills concise and not indulgent. Beautifully prepared and his craftsmanship superb.

    The O2 has a history of being a bit** to mix great sound. The feedback had zero to do with Page's rig volume or settings- the front of house monitor guy couldn't hear so he pushed the levels. The sound check was done with an empty venue, a house full of bodies absorbs huge sums of sound waves. FOH guy was doing his job, he just missed it. It got really touchy when Page clicked in the wah and opened it up- the upper frequencies boost made the FOH squeal. The softer Page played the more the guy faded up the level and dammit.

    I have a lockbox. It is crapton full of stuff. Yet, no evidence exists pubilcly of what comprises the contents.

    I echo DavidZoso's comments that we will be surprised at what is being hoarded inside that tiny private traders circle. Just because a tape is not circulated publicly doesn't mean that tape is not circulated among a select few.

    The temptation as a promoter would be almost irresistable to not record an act that you know is a cash cow both publicly and on the private traders black market- not to mention a personal momento trophy. It's not like promoters befriend the band managers. It's usually a deal when both are pissed off and neither gets what they want. Promoters are known to skin an act of any coin they can, any way they can- above or below board. Concerts can be professionally recorded without cameras being on the platform. Concerts can be professionally recorded without obvious duplicate mics.

    In Houston, many 1977 recordings exist in addition to the pro shot copies- from The Summit and the sports team leasees of The Summit. I can't blame them for not rolling the tape without (presumably) permission. I would have been laying on the record button.

    Logically thinking about it though, why would they go through the trouble and NOT record/get a copy?
  3. I am not a hoarder nor would I ever presume it to be my place to prove anything Geezer. Proof is subjective anyway, one can always disqualify it, nitpick it, slime it. Just because I see a camera doesn't mean there was film in it... doesn't mean it was turned on. Or that the recorder was on. Or that the film was any good. And so on...

    Usually under the influence of pride, ego and alcohol and stuff, those who are hoarders boast and have been known to do stupid things that get out of their private (they think) trusted circles. Hoarding is a sickness and as such cannot be reasonable.

    One guy I do know personally (we are not friends) says because he heard a voice tell him that he is the chosen keeper and protector and upon his demise must choose a worthy successor to do the same. Utter bs.

    The same guy has no problem hawking merchandise for 20x what it's worth even if it's possibly fake but oh no way is he going to share a videotape and a handful of cassette tapes. Now, he will send word that it's for sale for a price that is out of reach when confronted or when he is off his meds or on whatever pharma cloud he is under at the time is running his sh**.

    Something will click and he and the rest of the hoarders will trade their high of having control and power for a high of glory of being the one to bring stuff to light. Usually once they feel their illusion of control start to slip, they jump ship and grab for glory of being a hero.

    Just share. It's ok.

  4. I agree with the above poster. Jimmy knew how to get the exact right vibe (for lack of a better word) for all of their albums.

    several students at NYU have scrutinized the tempo of selected Led Zeppelin songs and the over arching constant is that the tempo and dynamics mirror the intensity of the recording = the vibe. If the recording and emotional connection is reposing to a whisper do not match the tempo then its a mixed signal. This is why click tracks suck the life out of songs.

    People who feel things deeply respond deeply to songs like Tangerine wherein the tempo changes many, many times to match the phrasing and mood- sometimes the tempo is steady only a few bars at a time.

    Had they click tracked it- it would be less than it is rather than more than it is.

    Dropped beats, hidden synchopation, drops & stops, inflection, cadences and intonations make subtle and shocking transformations of feel: those elastic moveable pulses which missytootsweet notes as "vibe." On some songs it is clear that LZ cued off of Plant, others they followed Page only a few times did they cue from a strictly written chart- they took the organic road rather than packaged.

    Production maestro at work. Let the flow do what it does- it flows.

    I wonder how tight a non-disclosure either formally or informally the engineers are/were?

    Other than Andy Johns and Eddie Kramer, most people are all too forgetful can't remember it was a long time ago didn't really notice not sure what they were doing...

    Even if they don't have non-disclosure agreements binding possibly still required to get permission from the label or catalog publisher? Page seems to prefer to keep the spotlight on the music and less about how and who other than the band.

    For those familiar with the TV series Classic Albums -hour long documentaries based on the making of some of the greatest records of all time, focusing mainly on the studio/production aspects- I am surprised that they haven't tackled a Zeppelin record yet, as Zeppelin's albums would be no brainers for that kind of programme. Thing is, though, which album? Presence would be awesome, but unfortunately the engineer on those sessions (Keith Harwood) is no longer with us...at least Eddie Kramer (second album) and Andy Johns (fourth album) are still around.

  6. that was the shirt I wore whilst doing yard work and repairing the cars... the wife tossed it after a while. I had to put my Knebworth tshirts in a lock box so they didn't suffer the same fate. I had worn them 9 years before we met and the yellow one is so thin you could read a newspaper through it.

  7. I look forward to the day she fires her handlers dumps the hype and staging and sings. She has a better voice and more style on her own than the machinery that churn out the current Gaga product.

    She is too smart and too talented to settle for being just a figure that they trot out on stage in a relentless marathon of repetition.

    ...just have a rule about no singing in bed. :)
