  1. Yeah pretty spot on. My only disagreement is Stairway, specifically Jimmy's solo. I think the solo is one of his best, just phenomenal. The live solo in 71 is still being worked out and there's quite a few shows where you can tell he's just trying to figure out where to go next or how to wrap it up. His playing here is fluid and purposeful, and he always feels on track. Great phrasing, great execution, capped off by a fantastic finish from Plant. If there's an A+ STH out there, this is one IMO.

I created a version of the original HTWWW for myself just to decompress it. After the official remaster came out recently, I bought a hi-res version to use as a reference and to try to figure out how they got it to sound the way it does. Based on some tests, the major difference with things I do is the amount of compression that was used on individual instruments. I normally use a limiter (basically a heavier version of compression) on an entire song instead of individual instruments because it gives me more control over how much the song breathes. I like that approach better in most cases, but I have started using compression on some individual instruments to make them stand out more. There's always a line between "easier to hear" and "compressed the life out of the music", and staying on the right side of it is one of the reasons it takes me so long to finish each remaster.

Totally agree with your last line there.

If you ever make your HTWWW version available, let me know. Thanks Steve.

  3. We do have Winston's remaster "How the West Was Redone" where he took the separate tracks from the 5.1 surround sound DVD and did some remixing. It's a definite improvement over the official HTWWW CD, IMO as the sounds 'breathes' a bit more. Less brickwalled, JPJ's playing comes out much clearer. My only complaint for lack of a better word, is it lacks some of the punchiness of the Shirley mix.

Steve, my ears would loves to hear your attempt at that project!
