  1. I enjoyed this thread. I love the whole investigative feel and the need for proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Although fickle nothing beats human intel for reliable information.

    And coolest of all JPJ  set the record straight. I had often wondered if any of the surviving Zep member ever read the content here. Apparently so.

    I was also amazed by the anecdote about Plant just turning it up when his mic failed. I've been told by some guys who saw Zep in 69-70 that his voice was superhuman. I never had an issue with his changing voice I always like on the post 71 tapes when he catches some of that old power. I would have loved to see him live in 69-70.

    On some of the early tapes it was clear that for all his power, Plant was a pretty meek front man for all the raw power. Even though later in 69 he had some swagger.

    I can't imagine anyone being as strong as Dickinson was on the Number of The Beast tour. But evidently Plant clearly was. I would love a really good complete SBD from 69.

  2. The 10 show run in Japan '96. has just about everything you'd want to hear them play that they never played live with Zep. Great run of 10 shows . There is a boxed set in existence but I ripped mine from the net. Fukuoka ( spelled like it's pronounced) on the 2/20 was the last show of that run. But Budokan  2/8 & 2/9 they do Tea For One and it's played from the gut .

    The ' 98 shows mentioned previously is when jimmy REALLY had his chops back. I favor them because of the live stuff from Clarksdale. The song are really given life and Jimmy DOES NOT sound so buried at all , in fact it's quite the opposite. He lets it rip and his sound is in your face . No mistaking it's Jimmy Page.

    '95 has some great shows too Glastonbury has an incredible Kashmir with an excellent orchestra and If I'm not mistaking they do Break On Through , a full version. I didn't know it was a pro recording but it makes sense since the orchestra sounds incredible. And of course the Forum Show. An excellent Hey Hey What Can I Do and a some of the best acoustic stuff since 75. It also has Shake My Tree , it has to be one of the few recordings out there. I believe the tour was cancelled because the album was so poorly received.

     Irvine is one of two shows I did not rip from the net. It is very high quality video (maybe not Blu-Ray). I later ripped the audio from the net later on. It was kick seeing jimmy paying so fluidly and he would just keep getting better with each tour. And he wielded that bow like a maestro. 

    This would have been the time to get JPJ and Jr. on the road . Robert and Jimmy  were clearly having fun and I believe those 3 or 4 years were Jimmy's  swan song. They played everything and especially in 98 Jimmy was in early Zep form. The songs had some acoustic variations but the full electric stuff was spectacular.  1998 was a great tour . You really can't miss with the shows that are out there. There is a guy who has a you tube channel that enhanced a bunch of the shows and another channel where the do some very good enhancements on a ton of the material.

    Great Stuff. Easy to find. Except for that boxed set from Japan 96. I REALLY want that collection. Gold box looks very high quality. 

    I would love for Jimmy to remaster 6 discs worth of songs  from those three years. No Chop Suey just the best songs of each tour .  That would cap his legacy perfectly.

    You know over the span I mentioned not even a hint of Stairway. Why was Robert so adverse to playing it ? I could speculate but does anyone really know ?

     

  3. watch?v=QkIwRqJ9XxgPut on a pair of head phones and crank this up. You can hear the power and precision very clearly. These guys have a bunch of interesting "remasters" but I can't say I have ever heard Bonzo so clearly before.

    Towards the end he is really slugging away but his strikes are so clean. I found it to be extremely entertaining .

    1/15/73 Dedicated To Rizzlers has the drums way up in the mix . It's one of my favorite Dazed and Confused renditions . Bonzo is going completely wild but he is on perfect time. For me 1973 was his best year . The Club Jaunt and Germany are just amazing.

    I prefer the "sluggers" like Bill Ward , Vinny Appice, Cozy Powell and Keith Moon. I was surprised to read that Moon was an idol of Neal Peart, they are like polar opposites. 

    I would have thought Carl Palmer, Bruford and White or even Ginger Baker.

    I would love to hear Geddy Lee playing with Bonham or Moon that would be an amazing rhythm section.

    I agree that he was starting to trend to more a complex style using less power and more touch, this is very noticeable on ITTOD. South Bound has some incredibly intricate patterns and time changes, most of that album has some real slick drumming on it.

    Neal Peart is not one of my favorites despite his brilliance .  Bonzo was a student of all things regarding drumming. I would bet he heard of Peart especially after 2112.

    Part of the reason my buddy's store survived for so many years is that he has "owned the bricks" since the late 80's. His overhead is low but his prices are high .

    But customer service is number one, the customer is always right. With a valid return he will give the purchase price plus a five buck store credit coupon full knowing that the customer will come back.

    He is as engaging and patient to the kid at the discount CD rack and the cranky old timer looking for 78's.

    I will buy items from Discgogs but I'd rather pay extra to "The Major" if he locate the item. He has a real good source for boots (imports) and will actively seek out items for most customers . You pay for that too. Lol , he's a businessman.

    Plus he lets me and a couple of other guys with nothing better to do hang out there and BS. And we get first crack at what comes in from the street. But nothing for nothing big buys or bulk deliveries we "bag and tag" or "snap and stash".

    His vintage vinyl is under graded and full disclosure of any damage noted .

    He is also a master at getting skips out of records (for a fee). Knows almost every stylus by heart or what will work (overpriced too) 

    I bought my first records and cassettes from this man, sadly a dying breed. He made a good living for himself and his bride. Selling records cassettes and CD's.

    I rue the day.....

     

  6. I 've recently tried this album again. I get it but still seems more like a Plant solo album and that's not a knock. I can deal with the lackluster rhythm section but the production is horrid.

    Jimmy Page in Abbey Road studio seems like a match made in heaven. I have no idea why he didn't produce the darn thing. I've never heard of any significant creative differences between Jimmy and Robert .

    Like ITTOD it's full of nice little subtleties  but I agree with the sentiment that the album needs to be completely remixed. I think I would appreciate it more.

    One thing you come to expect from Jimmy Page is a well produced end product even if the music leaves something to be to desired .

     

  7. Disc 3 of Wipe With A Rolling Stone 6/3/73, By Mr. Winston. I cannot get enough of it. Primo !!

    In my quest for quality AUD recordings I came across Disc 3 of The Winston re master of Wipe With A Rolling Stone. Incredible performance and extremely fantastic  sound. I thought Kezar 6/2 by GF was as good as it got for '73 Audience tape.   

    I know the master tape from this show is bad (damaged). Has anyone ever heard the entire Winston Matrix? Is the "wobble" corrected ?:smiley_pray:

  8. I can agree that Maiden is the successor to Led Zeppelin, no doubt. But the genre changed.

    Harris and company where just so so good but it was Harris' band. The early albums all play off his "lead" bass. Personal changes didn't stop them, Harris' was more driven than any of his contemporaries and like Page he a vision and he succeeded .

     Bruce Dickinson was the new Robert Plant, although he came in after the sophomore release. But he could emote, scream and sing beautifully. No one trick pony. No one could sing like Plant in his prime but Dickinson was nearly every bit as good but the music didn't allow or call for that primal blues based element.

    They did release five consecutive masterpieces and a classic live album. Sold out Radio City 13 consecutive nights in '85. Fell apart after Steve Harris' decided to use synth on Somewhere In Time. So eventually his vision killed the band. Now they attempt to recreate past glory. Sad.

     Never another Zeppelin. .

  9. The Studio Version on the reissue is an audiophiles dream . It's perfectly executed too. I play both SRS and RS at extremely high volume on my home . I also play SRS instrumental as a prelude to RS. Great listening 

    It is among my favorites but varies little when played live except an occasional lyric change as said already.

    Its a seemingly complex song and not easy to play live  especially as an opener.

    Winstons Seattle 73 and the early Japanese ones Zep and The Campaign come to mind in addition The Grand Finale 7-29-73 too. Millards 75 & 77 are great. Long Beach 75 is replete with bum notes or "sticky fingers". No matter JPJ , is wicked on the bass

    The live versions are often flubbed a bit but it's of no consequence. Love JPJ bass work so the bottom heavy live versions are favored.

    Just love the song but the studio version trumps them all for me

  10. Yes, I agree with you. " The Effect is Shattering" and "The Grand Finale" sound excellent and are unmolested save for whatever equalization was used in production they are  fairly new release insomuch that I have not listened it to it as much as some of the other versions. Winston has a remastered 7/27 that I have played only once so far and it's foggy

    An example would be that I know the 75 & 77 Forums (Millards), 1972 Forum, RAH, Southhampton, Trentham Gardens and Earl's 5/24 and 5/25 as well as SRS . In fact, for over 20 years I thought that the SRS was a true live show recorded in 1973. When I found out the album was "chop suey" I was pretty darn upset. The grooves from my SRS album where burned in to my soul!! So many memories of a time that is lost . Sorry , time traveling.

    It wasn't genuine. In fact, I recently learned that the album version of NQ is the only song to have been untouched right up to the Remastered SRS.

    It's like a woman who is beautiful and I find beauty in whatever flaw. Then she visits the local plastic surgeon and the flaw is gone. She is still beautiful but the lack of the flaw is not genuine and when I close my eyes, trace the lines of her face with my finger or caress her she is no longer  genuine . I'm not so shallow to dump her right away because her heart has not changed . She is the same but not genuine and before you know it. I lose interest.

    Ok. Officially too tired . Two more points and Goodnight all. 

    Sometimes, I pick up new (to me) Zep Boots in gluts that they invariably get lost in the shuffle and then eventually rediscovered and played, for a week a month, sometimes more.

    I'm still listening to The 1980 shows pretty much exclusively for over a week. Brussels SW is killer, Serial Killer on Winstons tape! I've had these shows for over a year and am finally getting to know them and the nuances.

    Boots are more often than not, genuine articles. True documents of a time and space .

     

  11. So many to pick from. I can agree with nearly everyone mentioned. However, I am leery of any official live release though. SRTS and HTWWW are great 'versions"  but are they true documents like Long Island 2/13/75 per say ? ....."studio magick". Just food for thought.

    My next project is going to be a compilation of the growth and regression along with what I feel are the most important versions of SW. 4 Discs.

    Right now I'm all 1980 Tour , all the time. Having fun too!

  12. I've had that problem with boots. Depending on your system or EQ you can bring the bottom up. If your system has pre-set equalization choices it will be tough. Since I started collecting/downloading boots I bought a component EQ (nothing crazy, middle of the road Harmon Kardon). I have a lot of fun with it.

    I first used used it on the 3.17.73  tape from an EV source and through trial and error I found the right mix. Voila, bass and bass drum. I played with mid range for snare drums but I'm not an engineer and never got the sound I imagined. 

    The re issues are are great sounding. Official releases, I just use the component for an amp of sorts and boost everything equally.

  13. Yep that is Zurich. Just had it out yesterday but my disc is not Tour Over Europe. It's TDOLZ " A Good Hot One", Zurich 1980. Bought it for a song.

    The Studio Version with the "guitar army" , JPJ playing in a style adopted by Steve Harris of Iron Maiden and Bonzo's wild drum fills, is my favorite.

    Couple of things going on here. There is a tape out there with a real real clean Thank You that cooks. Its Montreaux by a Net Source named the Robert Plant Experience. It was gone when I got around to burning it but it was certainly memorable.

    Vancouver 3/21/70 (T2) has a slow burn version of Thank You. Certainly one of my favs but it's one of those tapes that sound great through headphones and my portable Bose Dock but crappy in the car and on my component system.

    The Toronto 71 Fragment can be found on Godfathers High Heeled Sneakers and it sounds great. A little confused at first since HHS was Hampton Va. 9/9/71 and they list Toronto 9/4/71 as Hampton 9/4. I trust BootLedz on this for clarification

  15. Does the Disc 2 you mentioned include Tangerine? I snagged a fragment off the net months ago and it included Tangerine and an 8 minute BYS medley. GTC too, if I'm not mistaken. I burned it but didnt save it.

    Really stunning rendition of Tangerine from a tad fuzzy but well balanced AUD fragment.

    I brought it to my shop to see if my friend could determine what night it was from, 22nd or 27th or something else entirely. 

    He can't find it now. I have no reason not to believe him . The site I got it from was down for months and couldn't find it after that.

  17. The Record Store that I went to as a kid, Majors Records is still open. It has moved at least a few times over the years. You can get just about anything you want there. The change is that they carry very little stock. You have to order or submit a "wantlist".

    I also remember all the record shops in Greenwich Village NYC and " The Hiawatha Express", good time spent. Bleeker Bob is still open last I checked. I met Lars Ulrich there browsing the racks. Nice enough guy.

    Majors is the place I love though. I bought my first copies of Zep I II III The Forth Album and after 2 or 3 weeks of saving my allowance , Physical Graffiti. I also bought my first copies of  other records there. Looking back , of course they are fond memories but what I really appreciate is that it took months to gather those records . So my newest records were played often and I really appreciated them and got to know them.

    Fast forward to the Zep re- issues , I woke up one morning logged on I Tunes and Zep I II & III were all there waiting to be downloaded. Instant gratification and overload. A month later I got an email from Majors Records that my Zep albums where in and that Saturday, in one fell swoop  I walked out with the heavy vinyl packages and the CDs.

    I was driving home with a big smile on my face. I wasn't thinking about my new stash ( or the other much smaller package) , I was thinking of the first notes of Custard Pie from my first PG album and blast when I hit the button to engage the power to those crappy speakers.

    Time marches on ? Like a Salmon swimming upstream, later on today I will swing by Majors and pick up a GF "The American Return" by Led Zeppelin. I forgot when I requested it. I'm trying to collect all The Zep , Godfather matrixes and I'm excited.

    I'm lucky and grateful too.
