Nitpicking Page 9/7/1971 Boston, MA (I Got A Feeling- Graf Zeppelin)

Immigrant Song- Plant's opening Viking yells sounding fairly strong. 0:48, slight vocal crack as he pushes himself. Very powerful verses and Jim's guitar tone is thick and brutally heavy.  Solo- playing with passion off the bat. 3:17, in the zone for some fluid noodling. 3:53, getting a little experimental before returning to the riff. Very strong opener tonight, "A+".

Heartbreaker- Energetic tempo and plenty of energy. Page starts the solo with the usual phrasing. His rockabilly jam sounds good and he cranks the volume for the smear section, which is a tad sticky. Bouree is short and followed by a quick blues improv. Fast section- Page's tone sounds tremendous on this recording. He launches into a decent set of the usual bluesy phrases and reiterates the rockabilly riffs halfway through. The last measures has him still firing on all cylinders. Very good solo. Final verses are booming as they bring it to an end. "A".

SIBLY- Superb intro from Page. Robert's vocals sounding good through the verses and the tempo is slow and dramatic. Solo- perfect articulation and flawless phrasing throughout. 4:51, absolutely making his guitar scream. Robert's scream on the return however is a bit lackluster. The outro verses are solid but Page is the one who really shines here. "A+".

Black Dog- 2:06, some lyrical change ups. Robert is both powerful and a bit squeaky through the verses. Jimmy shredding on the start. 4:38, Jim's phrasing doesn't flow well but he's putting in maximum effort as far as emphasis. Not the most solid version here but fairly impressive. "B+".

Dazed- Good intro and verses. 3:47, Page improvising a unique phrase. First workout has Jimmy getting some good runs in. Six minute bow solo. Second workout- 11:40. Jimmy sounding a little loose on the start. 12:15, missing some notes through here. 12:37, phrasing hang up. Page is struggling terribly on this one. 14:35, Plant yells "You'd better stop it , man!" at a rowdy audience. 15:02-15:12, Page still missing notes. 17:00, Page abandons the soloing for some rhythmic riffing. 17:45, sloppy. 18:00, even Mars is played with little confidence. A couple of tape cuts take us to the outro, which has some experimental phrasing from Page. I think the misbehaving crowd threw the band off a bit, especially Jimmy. "C+".

Stairway- Jimmy loose on the opening phrase but everything is sounding good afterwards. The tape speed is questionable here as the tempo drags terribly. 2:37, Plant missing a verse. Also mistakenly singing the last verse early. Solo- Page kicks into shred mode off the bat with energetic phrasing. 6:13, bending this note badly off key. He gets back on track but seems to repeat the same phrases again, then a tape cut ends it. "B" for what we have.

Celebration Day- Tape cut takes us to the second chorus. First solo sounds decent and Jimmy takes a couple seconds to jump back to the verse. And that's all we have. No rating.

TTW- Only fifty seconds of audio, but sounds good.

GTC- Plant scolds the rowdy crowd. Tape cut skips the intro, but the rest is mostly here. "A".

WIAWSNB- Small cut on the start. Verses and first chorus are played very well. 1:35, Page ending the second chorus loosely with the slide. Solo- fairly good playing here from Jimbo. Plant incredibly powerful on the last chorus. Outro- dynamic playing with perfect energy to carry it out. Shame we don't have all of this. "A+".

WLL- A tape cut takes us to a medley performance of The Lemon Song, in which Page plays the solo very loosely. Not his best lead work but having this song live in 1971 is a godsend. 3:22, Page challenging Robert to a duel and going insane with some chaotic but passionate phrases. 4:24, Plant gets an excellent air raid scream in for the coda. 5:01, some unique phrases on the outro. Definitely interested in having this complete. "A-" for what we got.

CB- The usual energetic verses. Solo- Page shows wah pedal supremacy as he nails down some solid noodling. 4:20, Jimmy still going ham on this breakdown as Jones shows off a bit. Top tier performance. "A+++".

Thank You- Jones' organ intro is dynamic and well done, as much as it can be I suppose. Verses lack the usual liveliness but they're not bad. Solo- Page slings out the usual solid phrases here with good enthusiasm. 2:50, a little confusion as Bonham drops out to readjust his beat. 4:08, bending this note to the skies. Very good solo. 7:27, the outro drags on a bit with no direction as Page plays some final out of tune chords. "A-".

Rock And Roll- Hopefully he got tuned up. 0:20, some off sounding guitar phrasing. Plant's voice is deadly on the verses. 1:14, slight vocal crack. Solo- Page uses the wah and it fits quite nicely as he nails some good phrasing. Last verses are followed by an explosive finish. Very good ending track for the show. "A+".

Final Assessment- An excellent opening three songs quickly turns sour as Page loses his footing for a mid set slump. He does get back on track but unfortunately the recording is very incomplete. The main highlight is a standout Communication Breakdown, but there are also very solid versions of Immigrant Song, SIBLY, WIAWSNB, and a dynamic version of Rock And Roll. The Boston crowd sounds rowdy as they usually do, possibly throwing the band off a bit.

    Thanks for review!

Nitpicking Page 5/03/1971 Copenhagen, Denmark (Master Reel-revision/speed corrected)

    71copenhagen-2.jpg.48b698d1ad3c53402ec21aec92c69e06.jpg813.jpg.bf2765b01b6da2c3af6d4af1abcfc3b8.jpg815.jpg.cb1a8e5cc6f5d3b32560324d04070e4f.jpgLed_Zeppelin_Robert_Plant_Copenhagen_1971.jpg.bf4af1f7be8405ce30816e284c4d1adc.jpg

A good audience recording, much improved over previous versions.

Immigrant Song- Off to a thunderous start and Plant's opening wails sounding powerful. 0:52, Rob pushing his vocals harder than usual. 1:32, again. Solo-  Jim does some warm up noodling to start but doesn't really come alive until 2:40 where he goes full anger mode. 2:44, sounds like Bonham beating the hell out of his ride cymbal. 3:18, nice aggressive bend. Excellent version. "A++".

Heartbreaker- Good verses. Solo- 2:08. I've never really critiqued the "behind the nut" bend before but this one stands out as amazing. Smear section is blistering and very articulate, ending on a menacing bend. Bouree done nicely. Up-tempo section flowing flawlessly. 4:23, speedy descending lick. The return is good to complete a seemingly perfect version. "A+". (Plant accosts the disruptive audience immediately afterwards.)

SIBLY- Excellent intro solo by Page. 1:56, Jimmy misses (or skips) this chord and it reduces the impact of the chorus dramatically. 2:55, air raid supreme. Solo- solid throughout but not the most aggressive playing I've heard for it. A good performance but for some reason it feels a little unconfident. Perhaps the unruly crowd is impacting things. "A-".

Dazed- Coming before Black Dog for whatever reason. The usual start with a short first workout. Bow section sounding menacing and lasting five minutes. Second workout- 10:50, intense vocal matching Page's notes. Decent noodling throughout but nothing overly impressive. 14:37, behind the nut bends. Mars comes in with thunderous energy. 16:30, Plant very hesitant with the lyrics. 16:48, banshee scream. Jim gets some excellent outro noodling in. Something missing from this one although it's certainly not bad. "A".

Black Dog- Powerful vocals and a speedy tempo. Solo- phrasing is a little erratic to start. 4:48-5:00, Page going bonkers for a few seconds with some very aggressive phrasing. Some lightning fingers on the ending phrases sounding just like the intro to "Eruption". "A".

Stairway- Recording gets a little more distant but the verses sound solid. 4:46, Plant air raid out of nowhere. Solo- fluid playing throughout with Page playing passionately. 7:46, gotta be one of the fastest ending phrases he's ever played, a shame it's barely audible. The climax is sang with precision and power by Robert to bring this standout version to a close. "A++".

    GTC- Sounds good throughout. "A".

That's The Way- Jones' mando being low in the mix takes away from the magic a bit but it's a perfectly solid version. "A".

WIAWSNB- 1:26, powerful vocals. Solo- played quite well. Solid version. "A".

Four Sticks- Page starts with some experimental rhythms on the twelve string before kicking into the main riff. Plant's vocals are stunning throughout, sounding close to the album vocals. A shame the drums are buried in the mix. 5:10, Page attempts a makeshift solo before ending the song. Really not bad for a one off. "A".

Gallows Pole- And the rarities continue. Intro sounding good with accents from Bonzo and Jones. 1:37, once the second rhythm starts Page seems unable to find the correct timing, but it's nothing to off-putting. 2:57, again some powerful vocals from Robert. 3:27, Page struggling on these last phrases of the song. 4:08, airraid vocal almost identical to the album version. Page's outro solo is a bit lacking however. Obviously not a well rehearsed track. "B".

WLL- Plant introduces Richard Cole on tabla. Copenhagen, quite famous for out of time clapping and rivaled only by Japan. The usual start. Freakout is good and the solo is played nicely. Boogie Chillen- moving very fast. 5:52, Page goes for the stop/start rhythm but Bonham skips it, so Page quickly jumps to the solo, which is played awkwardly but decent. Bottle Up And Go has more energy as Page rips a mean solo. 7:40-7:50, Page on another level. That's Alright Mama- feels just a little rushed but played well. Mess O Blues- 10:38, Bonzo comes in early but they keep it together, though it does hurt the impact of the opening. Solo is played well. Plant comes back in while Jim just keeps going. Honey Bee- 14:33, Bonham changing up the beat. Solo- 15:02, Page just takes off into the stratosphere like it's nothing. It's seriously the most impressive set of runs, phrasing, and articulation I think I've ever heard from him, just ridiculously perfect playing here. 18:02, Plant's almost perfect air raid gets choked off at the top note. Still very impressive for 1971. The return and outro sounds good as this top notch medley closes down. Some of the songs felt rushed and some had some minor flubs, but overall this was a pretty good run through. I'll still hold it at an "A-" considering some notable mishaps.

Communication Breakdown- Perfect energy and verses. Solo- Page fires up the wah pedal and gets in his lightning fingered zone once again. Perfect. The "It's Your Thing" section gets expanded significantly with an amazing bass solo from Jones. Plant jumps in with Celebration Day as Jim tries to improvise something that matches, resulting in a unique little jam section. Jimmy eventually finds his way to the coda to end the song. A standout, unique version. "A++"'

MMH- (First live performance) 2:50, sounds like the guitar and Rhodes piano aren't in tune with each other. Verses are done fairly well. Solo is played decently. Plant's last lyrics are interrupted by an awkward solo by Page to end the song. Plant ends by singing "I really don't know" which seems to be in jest of this off the wall attempt. "B".

Rock and Roll- Recording gets pretty murky but sounds like an ok start. Solo- Page seems to forget some of the phrasing and wings it. Not too bad but definitely sounds off. Also noticed Plant's vocals are less powerful on these encores. An odd though energetic version. "A-".

Final Assessment- A standout Plant gig but also features some very impressive moments by Jimmy. The band were obviously itching to try out some new live material whether for good or bad. Plant warns that the material is raw and it is, with Gallows Pole sounding like it was made up on the spot. Highlights are Immigrant Song and Stairway, both boosted by a phenomenal Plant and solid playing by Page. Communication Breakdown also being played exceptionally with some bonus material. Don't let the "A-" on WLL fool you though. Aside from a few flubs it features some noteworthy, must hear work by Page.

Wow Thanks for the review! This show is in my Top 3

  3. If there will be some kind of official release oneday in the future, would like it to be full Bath, Montreux or kinda How the East Was Won 71, hope it wont be chronological live album (cause 2003 DVD basically already was chronological live album)

Nitpicking Page 3/5/1975 Dallas, TX (Grame Remaster)

    dallas75k_0.jpg.22e2e7ef198a998d7ea21086a36cb162.jpgdallas75-jb_1.jpg.5f9a27fc4902589ea8229ae2656e2a7f.jpg7535-dallas-kcd9.jpg.992bf27a775ee069a659d05baada9b7e.jpgRP_75_WTF.jpg.a53f7e9aafc73c188c6a61ef91a4202d.jpg

Rock And Roll- Plant not sounding too awfully bad. Decent verses. Solo- sloppy playing overall but the phrasing is good. 2:24, some sloppy chords to end the solo. Fairly average for the opener, nothing impressive. "B".

Sick Again- Good intro and verses, Rob sounds warmed up already. First solo- some looseness but pretty solid overall. Second half verses sound good. Outro solo- nimble fingers throughout. Not bad. "A".

OTHAFA- Solid intro from Pagey. Plant sounding strong on the opening chorus. Solo- the low octave noodling is phrased nicely. 4:19, straining a bit. Not exactly shred mode, but Page dabbles and experiments with some effective phrasing. A surprisingly solid version overall. "A".

IMTOD- Fairly good start and verses. First solo- pretty loose but the flow is good. Sounds like a drunk Duane Allman. Second solo- 6:34, much better feel on this one as he gets in the zone. The energy picks up nicely for the last bit. "A-"

TSRTS- Decent intro. 1:27, chord flub. First solo- lacking some technical precision but fairly good. Second solo- 4:27, slightly choppy chording. Not bad. Plant slurring some notes on the return.  "B+".

Rain Song- 0:56, slight vocal squeak. Solid verses. Nice instrumental balance on the recording. 3:14, Jones sounding a little odd with the bass pedals. Rock section- not bad. Page's outro is good and Plant gets a decent scream in to end it. A very relaxed version. "B+".

Kashmir- Solid start. 1:20. very slight flub. Mostly solid throughout. 8:07-8:10, Jimmy a little loose here on the outro. Decent performance but this recording lacks some punch. "A-".

No Quarter- The usual solid start. Jones- an intriguing start to his routine with some elegantly played piano phrases. 6:47-8:00, Jones in the zone for some of the best phrases I've heard by him. 11:40, amazing groove here with Bonzo. Solo- Page playing patiently to start. 15:25, phrasing is pretty loose and choppy. 15:55, better. 17:40, playing with more passion and fluidity. 19:46, very nice wah enhanced bends. A mediocre start improves greatly and saves us from disappointment from Page. The return is good and Jim does well with the outro licks. Minus the first half of Page's solo (which is really only sporadic phrasing), this one is really up there. A top five Jones routine. "A".

Trampled Underfoot- Very up tempo and Robert has some trouble keeping up in places. Jones has a short but good routine. Solo- Page enters sounding just a bit sticky but his phrasing is nice. 3:57, sloppy run. Really not too bad, but some stickiness keeps this around a "B+".

Dazed- The usual start. First workout- Page's fingers sounding stiff. The Woodstock intro reveals a string to be out of tune but it's still a nice rendition. 7:25, Plant squeak. The bow section pushes ten minutes. Second workout- 20:19, something happens as Page drops out and Jones picks up on bass to fill the void. 21:07, Page still struggling. 22:00, inarticulate. 25:24, sloppy. 26:05, Jim pushing it here but not impressing. Mars- Page struggling a bit with the chords. At last we hit the climax and Jimbo even flubs a few chords here. The outro jam flows a bit better. Not a good one. "C+".

Stairway- Verses sounding excellent. Solo- good start but a strange phrase at 6:45. 8:00-8:40, fantastic set of alternating phrases. Jim pulls together quite well for the remainder of the solo. Plant struggles on the climax. Not perfect but anything would sound good after that Dazed. "B+".

WLL- Some twangy chords to get started. The Crunge- a serious attempt at the song this time around. 1:08, Page not quite nailing the chords or timing. The theremin freakout is pretty run of the mill. "B+".

Black Dog- Verses sounding good. Solo- some choppy phrasing to start but not bad. 4:20, fingers stuck in strings. 4:55, sloppy. The remainder is played embarassingly as Page's fingers stop working. "B".

Final Assessment- A solid overall performance is marred by some low points. Plant is mostly good except for the Stairway finale. Page isn't perfect but is fairly coherent and controlled for 1975. He seems to have issues with his guitars throughout. Highlight is a solid No Quarter, with an impressive piano section from Jones. Dazed should be avoided.

Very interesting review, thank you! So what`s left from soundboards - Baton Rouge, St. Louis, second San Diego and first Long Beach.

Any hints which one could be next reviewed?)

Nitpicking Page 3/4/1975 Dallas, TX (Zapruder- Wendy)

    dallas75b_1.jpg.44b1b29a1a1a945c5c4c3308a57e5d59.jpg1975-03-04-dallas-jb-08.jpg.6d4c20ef17939933f10f20179019b6ea.jpgdallas75q_0.jpg.8da9e6ad62fb94aaf563444e0c32053f.jpg7534-dallas-rp-jp-9.jpg.4bfbf3bd63ae2d9cb14fdb7c347c6d15.jpg

Rock And Roll- Bonzo can be heard complaining about no sound coming from the snare drum before starting. Plant sounding much better than the previous show. Solo- Very sticky off the bat but the phrasing is decent. A little too loose overall. Last verses sound good and Bonham sounds like he's feeling lively again tonight. "B+".

Sick Again- Solid opening and verses. Solo- 1:46, sticky. 2:01, straining a bit. Outro solo- decent start. 4:30, fingers getting stuck. 4:40-4:48, fingers definitely stuck. Yikes. The solos bring this otherwise good version down. "B".

OTHAFA- Good intro. Plant sounding good on the opening verses. 1:29, flubbed notes and Page's fingers are sounding lethargic. Solo- the usual phrasing to start. 4:16-4:28, a little sticky. Some bends sound forced but otherwise it's not terrible. Solid ending (though Plant's final whoo is rough). It's a listenable version but nothing to brag about. "B+".

IMTOD- Decent start but there's some energy missing. 3:22, sloppy slide work. First solo- the lifeless tone certainly doesn't help. Overall not too bad. Second solo- 6:24, Bonzo stealing the show through here. Decent playing from Jim. 9:30, some loose slide playing. Solid ending. "A-".

TSRTS- Harsh tone from the twelve string. Solid intro. 2:17-2:21, sloppy chording. First solo- just a tad loose but overall good playing. Plant cracks on Calcutta. Outro solo- Page's fingers are moving quite well considering the fast tempo. Plant straining some on the final verses. A decent version. "A-".

The Rain Song- Solid throughout. Rock Section- Good. "A".

Kashmir- The mellotron sounding terribly off key on the start and no bass in the feed. 8:34, Jones' bass pedals finally make it to the mix. 9:14, sloppy noodling from Page. A fairly solid performance, but the technical problems really kill this version. "B".

No Quarter- Decent intro. Jones barely starts to solo until... 4:30, tape cut takes us into the end of the guitar solo. Jones returns with some nice keyboard work. The last verses are okay with some decent wah noodling from Page. 10:19, sloppy chording. Impossible to rate without the solo.

Trampled Underfoot- Good start. Jones gets a solid solo in. Guitar solo- 3:33-3:45, ouch. Phrasing is beyond erratic. 4:23, very sticky. 4:34, Page improvises an ascending phrase and has no idea where to go with it. 5:33, better groove here but back to stickiness soon afterwards. Awful solo by Jim. 6:50, not even the wah effect can hide this flub. Good ending. "C+".

Dazed- Solid intro and verses. First workout- the phrasing is a bit lazy as Jim plays some mediocre runs. 8:27, string out of tune as he begins Woodstock. 12:27, some weird bow sounds. Second workout- decent start. 21:57, sloppy. 25:30, fingers stuck. 26:33, a little sticky. Mars- not bad. Climax is good and the return comes back nicely. Not the greatest playing by Jimmy but it's not terrible. The ending guitar noodling is decent as the song comes to a close. "B+".

Stairway- solid verses throughout. 5:14, bad guitar chording. 5:28, an odd moment where both Page and Bonham pause briefly. Solo- good start. 6:29, this phrase doesn't fit well. 6:45, another awkward phrase. 7:30, sticky. 8:14, forcing this a little. 8:20, an excellent sounding run. Keeping a steady flow going but absolutely nothing impressive. Page barely gets the final phrase down. Plant sounding dreadful on the climax. "B" at most.

WLL- 0:16, chord flub. The Crunge- forget the bridge, Jim can't find the chords.  Theremin section is done adequately. "B".

Black Dog- 0:50, a little sloppy. 2:25, Bonzo and Jim not syncing up well. Plant gets a surprisingly good pre solo scream in. Solo- 4:03, a speedy albeit slightly sloppy run. 4:38, some good emotion in these somewhat sticky runs. I expected worse, not a bad solo at all. But it can't really save this one overall. "B+".

Heartbreaker- 0:19, Bonzo drops out for a beat. 1:04, Page struggling with the riff. The soundboard doesn't help, but I don't think you could invent a worse guitar tone. Solo- 2:57, stereo pan out of nowhere. Page gets a good rockabilly routine in. The smear runs are decent. 5:58, Page playing loosely. 7:03, strange phrasing. 7:25, very sticky. A decent solo overall. 7:53, Plant's vocals completely fall flat. A little too loose. "B".

Final assessment- Just not a very inspiring performance on the whole. Plant's vocals oddly seemed to get worse as the show went on. Page struggled the whole way through. When he wasn't sloppy, his phrasing was lazy and erratic. Bonham and Jones both appeared to have some technical issues. IMTOD might be the only highlight and it's nothing special.

Next night should be better, especially Grame remaster version. Thanks for the review!
