  1. It was at the Arena, not Kiel Aud. It may have originally been scheduled there, but moved to the Arena. The photos are from the Arena (including the outside marquee), and the ticket stub we have is from the photographer and states the venue.

Also, the comments on the Timeline page from fans who attended all reference the Arena.

Sorry, Sam, I'm still not convinced. The outside marquee photo may have been from the April 15, 1977 concert. The ticket stub says "Missouri Arena", when it was called the St. Louis Arena. I do believe they did not play at the Arena until the '75 tour.

  2. Was anybody at the May 11, 1973 Led Zeppelin concert in St. Louis? The Timeline page says it was at the "Missouri Arean", but I remember the radio ad mentioning Kiel Auditorium. Come on, my fellow St. Louis Zep Heads, help me out here please!

    Ice Palace

The Ice Palace was an old ice skating rink in a shopping center located on the south side of East Charleston (possibly East Sahara - it's been a long time & I haven't lived in Vegas since 1971) between Maryland Parkway & Eastern. If I recall correctly, there were some other big shows there in 1969, including Led Zeppelin.

We saw lots of shows at the ice palace, didn't see the dead show, too bad. I didn't really know who they were back then. The ice palace was in the Comercial Shopping Center on E Sahara and Maryland Pkwy. Went skating there, too. Cool place for the desert.

Commercial Center (or what's left of it, anyway) is located just south of E. Sahara Ave., about a block west of Maryland Pkwy.

  4. Searched for backup and found this - from Las Vegas Weekly - "top 25" concerts held in Vegas

    3. Led Zeppelin, Las Vegas Ice Palace, 1969

Though the Internet purports Zeppelin's only Vegas-related date to have been an April 19, 1970, Convention Center cancellation (either Robert Plant was in poor health or tickets weren't selling well, depending which version you believe), we've spoken to a dozen individuals who vividly recall getting the Led out at this once-hopping all-ages venue in the Commercial Center off Sahara Ave. It went down atop the wood-covered ice of a hockey arena—most likely, we deduce, on either August 11 or 12, between shows in San Diego and Phoenix—with fans of the band's blues-driven early music fanning across the plywood floor and up the bleachers along the sides. "They were good, except when Jimmy Page pulled out that violin bow and drove me nuts with it for the next 25 minutes," recalls Las Vegas resident Tom Burt. "It was before they were really big—they only had their first album out—but if you knew what was goin' on, you knew who they were."

Well, it would make sense for them to have played that date, it would have been right after they played San Diego on 8/10/69. Sounds like it might have been one of those spur-of-the-moment gigs, not on the official schedule. I wonder if this has ever been brought to Sam's attention?

  5. Yes - they played at the old Ice Palace at the Commercial Center during the summer of 1969. The group Pinkindy Canandy opened for them.

Really? I wonder why it's not included on any of the dates in the "timeline" portion of this website. Do you know the exact date by any chance?

  6. From Zurich, Switzerland, 29 June 1980:

"Well! Uh, guten tag, I mean, uh, good evening. Sorry about the uh, small delay...unforseen things. Very nice to be back in Switzerland again. Uh, been quite a long time, I think, since Montreaux. Anybody remember Montreaux? Showing your age, kids! Well, since we hit the road last time, we managed to make, create, and put out on album complete with artwork called 'In Throught the Out Door'. This is uh, one track from it, it's called, 'In the Evening'.

  7. I've been listening to IMTOD again today...and, after all what I have read on this thread, what I hear could be "I'll touch Jesus" or "Oh, my Jesus" the first time round and then before "dyin'...cough" "Oh, Georgina"

It's enough to drive me mad

I'm listening to the song right now, it sure sounds like Georgina to me, too...

  8. Everytime I hear IMTOD, I'm a little perplexed by what Robert sings before the final "my dyin', dyin'...cough" I know the official line is "Oh My Jesus.." but it sounds so much like "Oh, Georgina.."

My daughter is called Georgina and she thinks it's cool as she believes Robert IS singing her name :D I have listened over and over trying to fit "Oh my Jesus.." but it's not working! I can't imagine it is Georgina but can someone confirm beyond doubt what the line is?

    come on, come on!

i can hear the angel's singin', oh

here they come, here they come

bye bye! bye bye! bye bye! bye bye! bye bye!

oh, it's pretty good up here, pretty good up here

    i'll touch jesus (5x)

So, the question seems to be: Is he singing "Oh, Georgina" or "I'll touch Jesus"?

  9. From the LA Forum, 27 June, 1977, after "No Quarter":

"John Paul Jones has finally got that strawberry tart out of his pocket, and he also got it out of his hair...and he woke up with a half-tin of sardines by his nose, so I guess he had a pretty pleasant sleep last night. And so it is a great pleasure that we introduce him with his three-necked instrument, which is why we're so ENVIOUS of him. (And the same to you.) For a man who's always stayed in the background, he's been getting a lot of strawberry pie!"

    What about:

"Good evening! You might say 'welcome to the Forum', because it's getting a bit like our front room, you know what I mean? Well, if this is the last night out of six nights, six nights out of seven, we're going to do our best to play--and it looks like--until we fall over!"

  10. It only took me 35 years to notice this, but he does says "he" at the beginning of the song. As far as the song itself, it is definitely a goof on James Brown, especially at the end. "Mother Popcorn", I think, is a song where Brown sings "take me to the bridge", and Plant sings "I'm just trying to find the bridge". Funny!

  11. Your story is interesting))

Well many of my friends have told me i looked like Robert's wife, and eventually even my parents startsed calling me Maureen sometimes)) so i thought here it would be suitable to choose this username, as i'm used to it)

    You DO look like Maureen!

  12. July 4, 1983 Glass Pool Inn 4613 Las Vegas Boulevard

Filming of the music video for the single 'Big Log'…Robert is filmed swimming in the hotel pool…the gas station scene was also filmed in Nevada, while the other scenes were filmed

in Calico, CA, a ghost town east of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, I believe the Glass Pool

Inn was demolished a couple years ago.

Yeah, you're right, it's gone, another victim of modern Vegas makeover...
