Virtual DVDs of Zeppelin live... and some outtakes

Recommended Posts

I once counted the compact discs I'd traded when that was the primary method of sharing Recordings Of Indeterminate Origin, or as others called 'em as we heard 'em, bootlegs. The number came to 3,000, half of them Zep sets. That was a lot of plastic to tote around, so I decided if I could get two or three sets on one disc, that would save my back.

I started authoring DVDs compiling sets from the same tour, or venue, or whatever else came to mind as unifying an enjoyable bundle of live Led Zeppelin. Merge the CD-sourced audio with images of Led Zeppelin, you have a show supported with slides for your PC or TV.

A series of DVDs followed, quite a few traded, but many remaining for convenient personal use in my collection. And then I moved house, and knowing that was coming, I ripped my Zep DVDs and transferred the resulting folders to hard drives for storage. A lot easier on my back!

So, long story short, in this age of streaming I can offer a range of 'virtual DVDs', the folders that used to be the data 'in' a polycarbonate DVD's contents.

You can download them as folders containing a VIDEO-TS folder inside, that, when dropped onto the Play window of the VLC media playback app, will display in that window in the same manner as a DVD plays on your TV screen. And is navigable in the same way, by placing a cursor on a play button, clicking, and... the material plays.

Also, once you have any given virtual-DVD folder downloaded, if you're still into physical DVDs, you can burn one using the VIDEO-TS folder inside. Win-win.

I can provide a list of all the sets I have on DVD, some standalone, one disc equals one show, usually because it delivers full motion video along with the audio; and other DVDs with less space-hungry slideshows to accompany the music. Knebworth August 4 1979 is an example of the former, TransAmerican Zepress, 1977, the latter.

Most of you will know the Knebworth show, but TransAmerican Zepress?

It compiles five full-length concerts from Zep's 1977 USA tour, the shows from April 27 1977 (Richfield Coliseum, Cleveland, Ohio), May 21 1977 (The Summit, Houston, Texas), May 26 1977 (Capitol Centre, Landover, Maryland), June 7 1977 (Madison Square Garden, New York, New York), July 17 1977 (Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California).

Complete shows played beginning to end. The second 'half' of the DVD gets interesting.

I've pulled every performance of each song from the shows, and placed each song 'side by side' for sequential playing to offer compare and contrast to the listener. Obviously the recording quality is not the same for every show, but what you can hear is whether the band was 'on' show to show and song to song by comparing performances of each song in a single sitting.

That's if this sort of forensic listening appeals to you, of course.

Other DVDs of mine line up shows from touring years, East or West Coast USA, shows from the same venue from different eras, and so on. There's a whole range of 'new' ways provided to hear Zep other than the standard show format. Using the shows you are familiar with, but bringing them to your ears in a fresh manner.

Full disclosure - all the audio is [tisdu] because that's what I do.
