  1. Well I just have to recommend this fantastic Norwegian folk singer/songwriter Jens Carelius. He has released one album called "The First Songs", it's great and his next album is due out August 17. I think you will like him as much as I do. Good stuff.

To listen to some of his songs visit his myspace here

He is also in these two bands.

Folk band Blues Run The Game.

    Blues rock band The Guests.

  2. Two bands that I'm really into right now them being Witchcraft and Graveyard really like Pentagram but I have never heard of them. I want to give them a listen as they influenced the mentioned bands. What would be a good album to start with?

  3. Me too love his voice, and as Jahfin stated, he was an amazing songwriter! Of the albums you mention Townes Van Zandt is definitely essential. Some of his most loved songs are on that album. I have Delta Momma Blues as well, but if I have to recomend one of them, TVZ it is.. I don't have Our Mother The Mountain, but it's supposed to be a great album too..

Also the DVD Jahfin posted about, Be Here To Love Me is great!

Thanks for the recommendations Swede! Sounds like Townes Van Zandt it is.

The only Townes records I have are also Live At Old Quarter, Together at the Bluebird Cafe: Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark and For the Sake of the Song (vinyl). I have no problem recommending any of those to you but they only scratch the surface. If you ever get around to watching Be Here To Love Me (which you can watch online for free here with commercials) you'll find that Guy Clark makes several appearances throughout the movie. That only stands to reason as he and Townes were very dear friends but Guy's music is also well worth seeking out. He was so close to Townes he's included one of his songs on every single album he's ever released. On that subject, the Heartworn Highways documentary (with Townes, Guy, Steve Earle, David Allan Coe, Steve Young, Charlie Daniels and others) is also very highly recommended. When it was finally released on DVD a few years back a soundtrack was also put out. Click on the photo below for a link to the Heartworn Highways trailer.

I'll check out Steve Earle and Guy Clark, how many covers of Townes did Steve Earle play at the concert you attended. I would much rather buy the DVD as well as the documentary as the internet connection I have is too slow. Thanks for the recommendations and for bringing forth some good valuable information that concerns Townes.

  4. Townes' voice can be an acquired taste but if you're able to get beyond that you're in for a real treat as I do believe he's one of the best songwriters who ever lived. I also highly recommend seeing this documentary (click on the image for more info):

I haven't heard this yet but many people I know have strongly suggested it:

    cover_poet.jpg

...and, of course there's this (which I still haven't purchased yet). However, Steve did put on one hell of a show in Carrboro last week and told many very moving (and often humorous) anecdotes about his times with Townes.

I did like his voice so that's all good. As I said that was the first alum I bought from him, does it matter which album of his I buy next?, I saw these albums of his at the record store I was at

Our Mother the Mountain, Delta Momma Blues, and Townes Van Zandt.

The intimacy of the performance was also impressing.

I'll check out those recommendations, thanks.

  5. I think New Seasons is the album to start with, at least if you want the strong folk/country/psych influence. I haven't heard that much of previous albums, but what little I've heard it seems like a stronger rock-a-billy influence in them. I think Jahfin knows more about those albums.

BTW, nice song you linked to!

Yeah, that "folk/country/psych" sound was very apparent in The First Inquisition, Pt. IV song that you linked to, both songs caught my attention, I'll see if I find that album next time I'm at a music store.

  6. I would suggest Fleet Foxes' label mates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imaCBk0Bz4s,
    or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXU12uCoW3U.

Another band that I really like, which in some ways have that kind of sound is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNdyenwmLYo, I especially recommend their latest album "New Seasons". Here's another Sadies tune called

which shows they really rock too!

Thanks! Good recommendations,The Sadies have a cool sound will have to check them out more. Is "New Seasons" best to start with?

Here's the song I was refering to

  7. Ritchie Valens - Ritchie Valens

Entrance - Prayer of Death (2006)

    Entrance-Prayer-Of-Death.jpg

A stunning album, I still need the first three albums of this artist/band.

The title track is a nice hymn, I really enjoyed this hymn song as well as the Fleet Foxes's song White Winter Hymnal, anyone know any other bands or artists that sing some songs with that sound?

  8. WOW, thanks!

Cool! Guy Blakeslee has an incredible mastering of the blues rock. He has done a good job at covering some blues legends like Skip James, Townes Van Zandt's Rex's Blues. and a reworking of Robert Johnson's Come On in My Kitchen. Music is blues with psychedelic textures and touches of folk. Four releases thus far and he/band are working on a new album. Very good L.A. band!

  9. Dead Man - Ship Ahoy!/Thousand Mile Stare 7"

I'm just lovin' the artwork on this single, a great buy, shipped from Finland. This single was only pressed in 500 copies.

    deadman.jpg

    Also bought:

Willie Nelson - What A Wonderful World

    and

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hard Promises

  10. Graveyard

A hard rocking band from Gothenburg, Sweden similar to Witchcraft. They have released just one album back in 2008 s/t, great album. They just announced a tour of the states, west coast dates to be soon announced, I will have to see them when they come near by.

  11. http://www.pollstar.com/blogs/news/archive.../07/665990.aspx

Ean Evans, who joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2001, has died from cancer.

The band announced Evans’ passing in a message posted on LynyrdSkynyrd.com.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans. Ean put up a valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans.”

  12. I have heard the Firewood album and it sounds great, but I don't have it myself (yet). Many say it's their strongest album. Can't recall if I have listened to Graveyard, but I know them by name. I will have to check them out again.

BTW, how's this for a promo picture, shot for the Firewood album?? :D I haven't seen it since the release of Firewood and had to do a great search to find it on the net. Pretty sick and cool LOL.

    968.jpg

Good no sophmore slump! I'm really enjoyng Graveyard, great album. Ah, three great bands arisen from Norrsken.

Off with his head! Very cool promo pic indeed.

  13. Great albums, both of 'em!!

Yeah, they really are! The former from yesterday the latter from today. How's Witchcraft's second album Firewood if you have it? I also bought fellow Graveyard's debut lp from what I've heard thus far, its really good.

  14. I'm a big AC/DC fan...ACDC & Zeps are my favourite bands <3

I like all their songs from the first album (the Australian edition) as She's Got Balls or Love Song...

I love also Let There Be Rock, Dog Eat Dog, Highway To Hell, Shot Down In Flames, Shoot To Thrill, Hells Bells, The Razor's Edge, Thunderstruck, Stiff Upper Lip, The Jack, Ride On...I could list all my favourite AC/DC songs for hours :)

Unfortunately I couldn't see them in concert (they came here in Italy on the 19th and the 21st of March)...the tickets ran out in 20 minutes!

I think Angus Young isn't such a great guitarist, but now he plays better than 20/30 years ago ; he invented his style as guitarist and...he's GREAT! I think also Bon Scott was better than Bri as vocalist, but I like Johnson's voice the same...

They've always addded a second leg for European dates in the past 20 or so years so hopefully you get to see them next time they come to Italy.

  15. Great news for us American AC/DC fans, AC/DC have announced a second leg of U.S dates!
